Letters to the Editor
Ackley is looking for help
To the Editor:
I've always tried my best to
give the kids of Heppner
organizations to belong to and
activities to participate in,
sometimes without thinking
about the consequences to my
own security. Well, this time
I've bitten off more than I can
chew, and I need some help.
My friends in town that I owe
have been very patient with
me because they know my
situation, and I would like to
thank them for their patience.
However, frustrations about
my situation as it has develop
ed over the past few years
leads me to ask businesses,
organizations, and individuals
to join me in the crusade to
give our kids something of
recreational value. My frus
trating situation (along with
many emotional shocks over
the past few years) has led me
to do and say things to people
that I wouldn't have done or
said before. I want to get
things back the way they used
to be and still give the kids
what they so richly deserve
and need.
My main problem is the
Ackley Teen Club. I think it is
a good idea, and the people
I've talked to heartily agree
with me. However, with the
payments on the building,
insurance, electricity, equip
ment, food supplies, etc., I just
can't do it alone. I'm already
in a deep financial hole, but I
don't want to close the club
down after it just got started.
I've decided that as long as the
club pays for itself, I will
make it a non-profit venture.
Court
Notes
At its Feb. 18 meeting the
Morrow County Court con
ducted the following business?
Jerald Rea was appointed to
the Resource Council. Allen
Nistad, Ed Tarnasky. and
Tom Martin were reappoint
ed. Henry Krebs declined
reappointment leaving one
position open.
Joe Stahl of Irrigon was the
single appointment made to
the Revenue Sharing Commit
tee. The Juvenile Services Com
mission has a total of 20
members with Judge McElli
gott acting as advisor.
Mary Martin and Jean
Jepsen, both of lone, were
appointed to fill two open
positions.
A resolution was made to
appoint Don Briggs, Director
of Public Works, as Agent for
approving sub-structure per
mits. The County Court felt the
need for an agent for approv
ing necessary cutting of road
ways and right-of-ways.
Monte Evans
I've already had organiza
tions interested in helping me,
so I decided to open it up for
the whole town to get behind if
they wish.
I would like to publicly
thank Lott's Electric and P &
D Mobil for their support of
our club. They're all super
people and good personal
friends. I would also like to
thank Steve Groce and Rod
Cole for donating hour upon
hour of their time to run the
club when I can't be there. The
kids in town have really got
true friends in those two fine
young men.
If any organization, busi
ness, or individual would like
to help out financially or
donate some labor to this
cause, it would be greatly
appreciated. You see, I can't
even afford to put in bath
rooms yet. So, I need a lot of
help and I'm asking for a little
help from a lot of people. If
things do work out and the
venture can pay for itself, then
any profits made from the
club will be put into a
scholarship fund.
If you can help, please call
me at home (676-5591 ). I never
know when I'll be home, so
keep trying. If you can't get
. me, then maybe some of you
could get together and form a
r committee to look into the
situation. Any kind of help
would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not begging, I just want to
share the responsibility with
others, and get a tremendous
burden off of my back.
Sincerely.
Jim Ackley

"Yes," says Frances Mitchell, 74, Heppner. "If they don't
fix them now they will just get worse. They won't fix
themselves."
