On Friday, January 2, the
Cardinal girls traveled to
Wasco Co. The Cards were
defeated 19-30.
The Cards stayed with the
Redsides during the first half.
In the first quarter Tammy
Holtz made 7 points to keep
the Cards in the game. The
score at the end of the quarter
was 7-9.
In the second quarter San
dra Thompson made all of
Ione's 8 points, keeping the
Cards within one point at the
half. 15-16.
The Cards cooled off during
the second half as they only
scored 4 points. Wasco took

The Cardinals traveled to
Wasco Co. on Saturday, Jan
uary 2. The varsity boys were
defeated, 37-59.
The Cards couldn't seem to
get the ball to drop as they
were outscored, 4 18. In the
first quarter. The second
quarter went better for the
Cards, but the Redsides sunk
15 points to take a 14-33
half time lead.
Even though the Cards
outscored the Bedsides by one
point in the third quarter, the
Redsides were still in the lead
as the scoreboard showed
37-59 at the buzzer for the end

On Saturday the Cards met
the Riverside Pirates at lone.
The girls were defeated, 38 50.
It took awhile for the Cards
to get going as they only
scoreed 4 points in the first
quarter. Riverside took the
lead. 4 13
The Card got going in the
second quarter to score 10 to
the Pirates 12 points. The half
time score showed Riverside
on top, 14 25
The Cards didn't lose any
momentum at half as they
scored 14 points in the third
quarter. Riverside responded
with a ISpoint quarter to
advance the lead to 28-40.

On Saturday, January 3, the
Cards met the Riverside
Pirates at home. The Cardi
nals were defeated, 45-49.
It looked as if Riverside
would run away with the game
as they took a 2-12 first
quarter lead.
The Cards closed the lead to
7 as they outscored Riverside
14-11 in the second quarter.
The score at the half showed
Riverside in the lead, 16-23.
lone made a comeback in
the third quarter as they sunk
15 points to Rivesidcs 4. This
gave the Cards a 31-27

lone JV boys traveled to
Wasco Co. The Cards returned
with a loss 26-47.
The Cards led by two points
at the close of the first
quarter, 8-6. The second
quarter was pretty even but
showed the Redsides with a
16 18 advantage at the half.
Jeff McCoy scored 10 points in
the second quarter for the
Redsides.
The Cards stayed with the
Redsides in the third quarter
as they were only down by 4
at the end of the quarter.
Elk 's Hoop Shoot for
boys and girls Sat.
Girls and boys, 8 through 13
years of age in the Heppner-Lexington-Ione
areas, will get
a chance to participate in the
Elks' Hoop Shoot contest on
January 10. from 9 to 11 a.m.
Six winners in the local
competition, a boy and girl
from each of three age groups,
8 9, 10-11. and 12-13) will go on
to district competition in
Hermiston. Jan. 24. Those
winning district will shoot for
regional competition in Port
land at halftime at a Blazer
game and 6 winners of
regional will shoot at national
competition at Indianapolis.
The prospect of a local boy
or girl winning is not so dim as

in rematch
with Huskies

Tuesday, December 23, the
Heppner Mustangs again took
on the Sherman Huskies. In
the Christmas tournament,
the Huskies walked all over
Heppner but this time in a
rematch for their last pre
season game, the Mustangs
soared over the Huskies, 57 to
50.
First quarter action started
out pretty slow for the
Mustangs as the Huskies were
strong on the boards and hot

Heppner outscored the Hus

to lend 47-39 going into the
final period. The Mustangs
were down by one at the half.

of 25 will become the winners.
Swanson stresses that kids
wanting to compete should
bring proof of age.
The competition, in which
over three million young
people participated through
out the country last year is in
its ninth year.

was very exciting, as men

The Mustangs came out
"just a cooking" as they sailed
the ball through the hoop
seven times and holding the
Huskies to five baskets. There
were no shooting fouls during
this quarter. At the end of the
third quarter, the score was 37
to 40. Sherman's lead.
Fourth quarter action was
better than ever as the
Heppner Mustangs flew to 20
points. The Huskies fell behind
with only 10 points, bringing
the total score to Heppner. 57,
to Sherman, 50.
Dorian Forrar had the
highest pony total, with 14
points, followed up by Ken
Stookey with 12. Both of these
young men led in rebounding.
