The Jan. 1,1931, Issue of the
Gazette-Times reports that
Christmas saw 250 Heppner
kiddies gather at the Elks
Temple to receive gifts from a
community Santa (Charles
Cox). Along with 250 adults
who accompanied the child
ren, 500 people greeting Santa
made up the largest Christ
mas gathering ever. All child
ren under 14 years of age were
given gifts.
The Elks Christmas com
mittee under Roy Ohlesch
lager, chairman, handled
most of the preparation work
and had charge of the gift -giving.
The Kanouse orchestra
from Condon, which played
for the dance later in the
evening ohliged with several
elections while the crowd was
assembling before Santa's
arrival.
Marriage licenses issued
exceeded divorce decrees
granted in Morrow County by
18, in 1930. with licenses
totalling 23 and decrees, five.
Stockholders of the Black
horse Telephone Company
met Saturday afternoon at the
courthouse. Among those at
tending were O. A. Devin, R.
W. Turner, W.B. Tucker and
W.G. McCarty.

Twenty-five Year Aro
Phil Blakney, Heppner
pharmacist, was named pres
ident of the Heppner-Morrow
County Chamber of Com
merce. The chamber elected
directors early in Decem
ber and from this group the
new president and other
officers were named by the
board's members. On the
board are Blakney, Jack
Angell. chosen first vice pres
ident; Jack Bailey, Becond
vice-president; James J. Far
ley, Jack Flug, Dick Brunner,
Dr. Wallace H. Wolff, Newt
O'Harra and Al Lamb.
County gets one of its
wettest years in 1955. Tab
ulations show that the Hepp
ner weather Btation checked
16.25 inches for the year just
past. This compares with only
11.61 in 1954 but is slightly
under the 17.09 inches which
fell in 1953.
Heppner post office shows
slight gain in business for '55,
according to Postmaster
James Driscoll.

sworn in as a new council
member to fill the unexpired
term of Jeff Carter, who
resigned in November when
he moved from the city.
New construction and re
modeling work done in Hepp
ner during lt)55 reached a
record high of $344,725 it was
revealed this week by a check
of building permits issued by
the city.
The largest single item to
show during the year was the
new Heppner grade school
which was built at a cost of
over $257,000, though it was
not necessary to obtain a
permit for this building.
The 1955 figure is more than
three times that for 1954, when
a total of $119,050 in new
building work was started in
the city.

pletion of the Children's Room
was the major reason for the
book moving, the librarian,
Mrs. Weatherford explained.

Mr. Charles Nelson has Just
returned from Red Arsenal,
AB, Florida and North Caro
lina. While there he visited
Miss Lisa Maness and her
family.
While most of the residents
of Heppner were enjoying
Christmas Eve with their
friends and families some
vandals were having a good
time destroying property. Les
Paustain reported to Heppner
police that persons unknown
bad stolen 62 of his outdoor
lights. Lois Winchester re
ported the theft of many of her
outside decorative figures.
