Dec. 12, the I Heppner Mustangs were de feated at the Condon Christ 'nuts tournament, when they I faced the Sherman Huskies at Condon. Heppner lost to Sher man, 42 to 61. Sherman has a pretty young team there were only two seniors and the other starting I three were two Juniors und one sophomore. They all had good height and good shooting : ability and played extremely ' good defense plus running the i offense well enough to score, j During the first quarter, the Heppner JV boys can't get out of starting blocks; lose to RHS The Heppner High boys junior varsity basketball team couldn't get nut of the starting blocks and suffered a 57-40 loss to the Riverside JVs at lioardman, Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Mustang JVs fell behind Riverside, 17-8. at the end of the first quarter and found themselves behind, 36-14, at the half. Despite outscoring le Pirates, 26-21. the second lulf, Heppner was loo far behind to get back in the ball game and evened its record at 1-1 on the season. Riverside is 2 0 on the year. Heppner Coach Brent F.gg ers cited "stupid fouls and way too many turnovers" as the main reasons for the lopsided defeat. The Mustangs lone Jr. High boys open with close one In Michelle t.uttue The lone Jr. High boys opened the season with a very close game on Thursday, Dec. 11. The Cards played Heppner, the game went into overtime and the Mustangs took home a victory. 30-32. The first two quarters were pretty evenly matched as each team scored 10 points each. The third and fourth quar ters were again evenly matched as each team scored lone varsity returns with victory over Bears by Michelle La Rue On Saturday the Cardinals traveled to Mt. Vernon only to be defeated, 30-35. . In the first quarter lone was outscored by three points, 8-11. Mt. Vernon scored 11 points in the second quarter to the Cards six, making the core 14-22 at half time. ; The Cardinals outscored the Bears in the third and fourth quarters but not enough as the Bears won. 30-35. lone had two injuries in the fourth quarter. Cindy Hill has Huskies out-scored the Mustartgs with six field goals and four foul shots for a total of 16 points, followed up by Fleppner with a close 10 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Mustangs used a sagging defense and Sherman used the man to man. Both teams seemed to be doing an awful lot of running up and down the floor. At the end of the half Heppner had made five buck ets and one free throw shot W a total of It points. Dorian Forrar scored four points for the Mustangs. The Mustangs shot only .327 (17-for 52) from the field com pared to .423 (22 for 52) for Riverside, Orr led Heppner with 14 points, 12 retmunds, four assists, and four steals. He also led in Coach Eggers rating system with a 411 mark. Jay Hayes had eight points for Heppner. Currin 6. Shane Laughlin, 4. Harry IB points, sending the game into overtime. Steve Currin stole the ball and made a basket to put the teams into overtime. The score at the end of the fourth quarter was tied at 28. In the overtime, lone scored first to make it 30-28. lone fouled and Heppner sank two free throws. Heppner then connected on a field goal to win the game, 32 3(). For the last five times lone and Heppner have played, the score has been within five a slight concussion but will be back for the next games. Michelle LaRue injured her knee. "The injuries in the fourth quarter really hurt us, we were coming back and could possible have won the game, said Coach McDougal. Leading the scoring for lone was Cindy Hill with eight points. Leading rebounder was Cindy Drinkard with seven. lone shot 45 percent from the free throw line to Mt. Vernon's 67 percent. the first half was Heppner, 21, to Sherman, 33. Third quarter action went pretty smoothly for the Hus kies as they held the Mustangs to a total of 10 points the whole quarter and Sherman racked up 17. In the fourth quarter. Coach Dale Holland settled his boys down for some serious ball playing. At the end of the quarter the Huskies and the Mustangs held each other to only 11 points. The free throw percentage for the Mustangs was 40 percent. Sherman had 65 percent. Groshens. 2. Matt Clark. 2, Marty Britt. 2, Andy Samples. 1, and Greg Connor, 1. Coach Eggers said that his team did very few things right. "I was very disappoint ed. We used very little intelligence out there. We didn't come out there ready to play." Eggers said he was pleased with the performance of Orr. except for the fouls. The Mustangs will attempt to get their second win of the season Friday night at 6 o'clock when they travel to White Salmon Wash., to play the Columbia High JVs. Hepp ner defeated Columbia two weeks ago 48-22. (minis, milking tor several exciting games. Coach Deeter was pleased with the way lone played, and cited Jeff Ball for his outstan ding defense and hustle. High scorer for lone was Randy McCabe with 17 points : Jeff Ball had 7; and Mark Schmidt, Kevin Ball and Eric Pointer all scored two each. Steve Currin scored 10 points for Heppner. Barber's team was led by Pat Campbell's 16points, John McCabe's 15, Jim Bailey's 14, and Jeff Betsinger's 10 in the marathon affair. Steve Ball and Larry Smith scored. 13 points and John Myers 10 for Smith's team. In other games, Dick Devin's team romped over Les Schwab, which had just four players, 80-41. Rick Johnston's team ripped Forest Cardinals Mt. bv Michelle LaRue The Cardinals traveled to Mt. Vernon on Saturday, Dec. 13. The varsity boys were the only ones returning with a victory. 49-39. The Cardinals took a 16-8 lead over the Bears as Shawn LaRue scored 10 points to lead the Cards in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bears were outscored by only two points. The Cards had a 10-point lead. 29-19, as they went to the locker room. The Cards cooled off a little at half time as they were outscored by two points in the third quarter. The Cards still held an eight point lead as the quarter came to an end. The Bears made a run at the Cards, getting within three points, 40-37. But the Cards took a time out and held the Bears to only two more points in the game. lone made nine more points after this to make the final score 49-39. Leading the scoring for the Cardinals was forward Shawn LaRue with 19 points: Mark Patton followed with 12 points, hitting four for four from the line. leading rebounders for the game were Jim McCabe and Shawn LaRue each wifh 11 boards. lone pulled down 39 re bounds to 21 for the Bears. Jim Boor with 15. and Roger Britt with 14. The trio of Gino Guglielmelli (14 points), Tom Pointer (12), and Kevin Roun tree (10). was not enough for Les Schwab. Johnston's team was led by Tim Adams' 14 points, and it got 12 from Steve Rhea, 11 from Gary Watkins. and 10 from Gary Van Arsdale. Howard Burnside hit for 16 Vernon trip times to 22 for Mt. Vernon. The Cards outshot the Bears from the field. 31 percent, to Mt. Vernons 27 percent. From the free throw line lone was 13 21 for 62 percent; the Bears were 5-8 for 62 percent also. Mt. John Boyer led Allstott's team by popping in 22 points. Mike Stookey and Marvin Lane added 12 points each to the winning cause. lone was paced by Dick Snider with 13 points. Gordon Myers with 12, and Del LaRue with 11. Quar ter scores were 8-8, 13-13, 19-25, and 31-29. The scores were tied until half time and until the last 19 seconds when Lynndee Devin made the final basket to bring the score to 31-29. The second Filly game of the Condon tournament was played against Condon, the winner of the Condon-Sherman game. Quarter scores were: 13-16, 24-21.32-34, 44-47. High points server was Mary Kincaid with 19 points. ; Fifty-four percent of the free throws were made.
