The lone IliRh School boys' bafikotball teams will both open their BcaHons thin wwk. The Junior varsity opent-d their Benson Tui-Hday against the Riverside Pirates, and will play the Heppncr Frosh at 4:30 on Saturday at Heppner. Junior varsity practice star ted Monday, Nov. 24, for some of the boys who were not football players. Others joined the practices during the week. Those who will probably see Junior varsity action and return from last year's team are Donnie Taylor, Denny Starr, Craig Gutierrez, Tim Patton, Roger Morter, Vlnce McKllipott and Roger Chil ders; all are sophomores. Others out are junior Chris Rietmann, freshmen Darrin Padlierg, Darrell Colvard, Howard Leavltt, Craig Hams, Mike Douglass, and sopho more Troy Lindstrom, The Junior varsity Is coach ed by Gene Sartain who also guided the Junior varsity last year in his first couching experience. The JVs were a very successful team lasl year and are looking forward to another great season with almost the same personnel returning. The boys varsity as of this writing has not yet started practice. They will start Monday, Dec. 1. Coach Del LaRuc, In his tenth year as Cardinal mentor, will greet an experienced group. The varsity will be almost all seniors as there are eight senior lettermen returning, from last year's squad. Last year's squad had a league record of 11-3 and a season record of 15 8. The team culminated last year's season by winning the district tour nament and playing In the state"B" tournament in Rak er. The Cardinals return three starters from last years team, They are fi' 2" center Mark Patton, who has strength and size inside. 5' " forward Gregg Rietmann. who has good spring and can score, and 5' 8" guard Trove Peterson, who will be the key ball handler and adds lots of quickness to the fast break and to the defense Other lettermen are fi' forward Shawn LaRue. 6' forward Jim McCabcbth played extensively last year) 5' H" forward Ralph Morter. fi' 2" center Paul Snow, and 5' 9" guard Ies Thompson who also adds quickness to the Cardinal backcourt. Another senior out is 5' 11" senior transfer John Smith. Up from the junior varsity at a guard spot is junior Jeff Hams at 5' 10". One or two of the sophomores from the junior varsity may also see some action. The Cards are looking forward to the round hM season after having a week off from football. The goal of the Cards is to try to improve on last year's record and to again make the trip to Baker for the stale tourney. According to Coach LaRue. "Kvcn though we have an experienced ball club return ing, it will take lots of hard work and dedication to equal or improve on last year's season, However, with the people we have and with a good attitude and teamwork it is possible." LaRue expects Arlington. Dufur. Condon, and Echo all to be battling for the Big Sky Championship. There will be no charge for the dessert. Those attending should bring a dessert. Every one is invited to attend. Dec. 6. The Cards are coached by Laura McDoucal. in her first year at lone. McDougal is a 1980 graduate of the Univer sity of Idaho. The Cardinals have seven returning lettermen on the team. Senior Lisa Meyers has lettered one year. Juniors returning are Margaret Doh erty, Tammy Holtz. Michelle LaRue. Liz McElligott. Diann Morter and Sandra Thomp son They have all lettered twice. New additions to the team are junior Cindy Hill and sophomore Cindy Drinkard. The Cardinals will be an experienced ball club as some of the girls have played together since the seventh grade. One of the Card strengths seems to be their depth as most of the girls have gotten quite a bit of playing time in past years. The Cards also have some good outside shooters. Lack of height for rebounding seens to be one of the team's weaknesses. The Cardinals with a new coach, more experience and depth are looking forward to improving on past years' records. by Frances Rose Wilson The Rev. G.B. "Jerry" Robeson, an Assembly of God missionary to Costa Rica, will be guest speaker Sat., Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Irrigon Assembly of God, the Rev. J A. Gordanier, pastor has announced. The public is invited to attend. Since 1973 Mr. Robeson, his wife, Carol, and their daugh ters. Sue and Debbie, have been ministering In Costa Rica. They have, an active ministry in television and radio and have produced 485 live and video taped Gospel television programs for Latin America. He has also written a book. "Faith in Eruption" and has made numerous L.P. recordings of his trumpet. The Robesons are former pastors of the Umatilla Assembly. Bob Baker. According to Baker, the Mustangs did see post-season play in 1967, and lost the championship to Vale. Agency on Aging council to meet The District 12 Area Agency on Aging advisory council will be meeting on Monday. Dec. 8. at the Pendleton Senior cen ter, beginning at 10 a.m. The project council will also be meeting simultaneously with the AAA.
