Rain falling on Heppner last Saturday necessitated a horse-drawn cart instead of a sleigh. Hutch treats local kids to a sleigh ride every year-that is, when "Old Man Winter" cooperates. Work on Willow Creek Dam project to get underway Work on the Willow Creek Dam project "Should start sometime this week," an engineer from Portland told the Heppner City Council Monday night. According to Scott C. Kvan dal of Barrett, Harris & Associates, Inc., consulting engineers from Portland, work on relocation of a road in he diim area should start Thursday or Friday. Kvandal also told the coun cil that lxth the Corps of Engineers and Pacific North west Bell are requesting that the phone company be allowed College credits for life experiences to be discussed Dec, 11 College credits toward a college degree can be award ed from a variety of work and nonwork experiences. Col leges, such as Blue Mountain Community College in Pend leton, are recognizing these experiences and validating them for those who would like to continue their education. For those in the Heppner area, how this is accomplished will be explained in a free orientation class by BMCC'i Ellsworth Mayer, academic planner, on Dec. 11, Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m., in the library at Heppner High School. For information call 676-5039 in Heppner or Mayer at BMCC, 276-1260, "If enough interest is shown, we will set up a portfolio class for those who actually want to get college credit for life work in the upcoming term," Mayer said. In such a "portfolio class" students would learn how to prepare the evidence of non school experiences and abil ities in a manner acceptable to accreditation committees at . BMCC and-or other institut ions. Mayer said there is a wide range of activities which are recognized by college as equivalent to classroom in struction. Businesses, farm ing oM'rations, cultural hob bies, handicrafts, individual study, military or govern mental service and others can be considered. Mayer said the program should be of special interest to those whose college education was interrupted. By applying through "Experiential Learn ing" processes, such students should find that interim life experiences were not a total loss as far as college credit goes, he said.
