Make solar heat for pool a reality
To the Editor:
It has been called to the
attention of some of our local
citizens that the utilities to
heat our city swimming pool
are becoming prohibitive due
to the inflationary cost of
petroleum. This year's bill
was approximately $2,200.
At the same time it was
learned that Condon, Oregon,
was in the process of building
a solar system for their own
pool which is located on the
public school grounds. Today
their system is completed and
from all indications it is a
great success. The cost of this
system was about $20,000. Cost
to the community of Condon
was $10,000. Grants were
received in the amount of
$10,000.
Solar energy is one of
today's answers to an inex
pensive means of heating the
environment in which we work
and play. There are enough
people in Heppner, including
members of the Lion's Club,
who want to see a totally
integrated solar system which
eventually may include a
dome designed to cover the
pool and built in such a way as
to make it possible to have a
year-round recreational area.
Members of the Lions' Club
and students at Heppner
Elementary School have be
come actively involved in '

seeking further information,
including the gathering of cost
estimates to put a functional
system together for the gen
eral public to use.
The Lions' Club and other
concerned citizens in Heppner
are interested in your ideas
and input toward this worth
while project. There is a very
limited amount of money
available at this time which
could be used for the project.
We. therefore, are open to any
suggestions in regard to
acquiring more financial
backing.
We are convinced that if
enough people in Heppner are
for a recreational area backed
up by solar heat, we will see
this project become a reality
within the very near future.
Interested citizens please
make your desires and or
concerns known to one of the
people below . or any mer. ber
of the Heppner Lions' Club by
Nov. 26. 1980.
We would propose forming a
community committee to
work on this project if the
people of Heppner favor it.
Community support and citi
zen action will be needed to
make this proposal a reality.

Question: "If the hostages were released would it
influence your vote in the Nov. 4 election?"
"No," said Bernadine Cannon, 29, of Heppner. "I don't
hink that Carter has handled the hostage situation right
,'om the beginning. If they were released it wouldn't matter
if they were released before or after the election."
