Eventually, the professor wants to expand the program to give students the opportunity to do actual field studies at the Fossil Beds. "If you take the age of mammals-the last 60 million years-I don't think you'll find any specimens from any where that are better preserv ed than fossils from John Day." says Ruben. "And it's not only the quality of preser vation you find there, but also the unbroken sequence of preservation. "Other places have fossils, but they're bits and pieces of time. "In order to collect fossils from the monument, estab lished by Congress in 1975. Ruben reached an agreement with the Park Service that pays dividends to both the university and the govern ment agency. Ruben and his students are allowed to collect specimens and. In return, the national monument receives fossils that have been prepar ed by OSU's zoology depart ment. "The reason the monument was established in 1975 was for the protection and scientific interpretation of the fossil NOTICE resource in the upper John Day Valley, and random collecting, of course, is il legal." says Benjamin Ladd. the national monument's su perintendent. "But we're a small monu ment with a small staff and we don't have the curatorial capabilities that larger insti tutions have. It's not our intent to maintain a large fossil collection, we Just don't have the facilities so we utilize the fossil resource by cooperating with institutions like Oregon State." says Ladd. "We want students and visitors to see what fossils look like when they're still in the ground.
