Metscham 's visit to Hepp ner Friday evening marked a homecoming for two men who got their starts here and have since climbed up the ladder of success in Portland. Robert C. Notson, staff writer with the Portland Oregonian, who has been accompanying Mr. Met scham while making a polit ical survey of the state is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Notson of this city. In Heppner, Notson got the first journalistic experience that probably had much to do with determining his choice of a career. It was while serving as "devil" in the Gazette Times office that Bob fell an unresisting victim to the smell of printer's ink, as well as yielded to his first urge for publishing. Dr. Dan V. Poling of Oregon State College will be in Morrow County Nov. 7, 8, and 9 to meet with people in the various communities having granges. Dr. Poling is a song leader of national reputation, being considered one of the best song leaders in the army camps during World War I. With announcement of scholarships won by 4-H club members this year, C.W. Smith, county agent, reports the most successful year for 4-H club work since its beginning in Morrow County. A total of 240 boys and girls were enrolled in the county, fifty percent of whom have filed their final reports with either the county agent or Mrs. Lucy E. Rodgers, county school superintendent. Twenty-five Years Ago A second shift went to work Monday in the sawmill of Heppner Pine Mills and man ager Paul Koenig said Wed nesday that lumber product ion will be doubled within a short time when the crew gets used to the new operation plan. Added to the crew were nine men who handle the sawmill operation on the second shift which operates from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. This brings to 90 the number of men now on the plant payroll. The sawmill when the two shifts are operating to full capacity will turn out an average of 90,000 feet of lumber per day. Sales of E and H United States savings bonds contin ued to climb in the county during September, county Chairman Jeff Carter report ec this week. Sales for the month reached $32,789 com pared with only $5,284 for the same month last year. Recent developments and current problems in city . government were discussed by city officials of Oregon at the League of Oregon Cities convention in Portland this week, among city employees honored was Joseph J. Nys who has served as a city attorney of Heppner since 1918. A copy of the Karachi, Pakistan, newspaper received Wednesday by the Gazette Times carried a news story telling of the arrival in the Pakistan capital of a group of 28 Americans on a round-the-world tour. Among those on the tour are Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Cutsforth, Lexington, and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Lindstrom, lone. Mr. George Steagall of Lexington won first prize of a rifle in the big buck contest sponsored by the Lexington V.F.W. post. His deer, the largest entered in the contest, weighed in at 190 pounds. Five Years Ago Over 275 people attended the retirement dinner for Dr. L. D. Tibbies last Wednesday at the Heppner High School cafetorium. Dr. Tibbies re tired from active practice after serving the community for 41 years. Dr. Wolff, acting as master of ceremonies for the occasion remarked. "The students of Heppner High School will dedicate their yearbook to Dr. Tibbies in appreciation of his many services" Dr. Wolff praised Mrs. Tibbies for the many evenings she has spent alone eat inn meals, ami mis sing social engagements and activities while the doctor was away on call. After receiving n standing ovation from the crowd. Dr, Tibbies addressed the group saying. "I asked the commit tee if I had to make any long speeches and they said no ..and that bothered me, so I hove nothing to say except thanks to everyone." Future development in the north part of Morrow County was made possible by the recent m eeting of the planning commission, The commission approved an application for Ken Evans requesting a atone change for 80 ncres from qualified farm to light industrial.
