Letters to the Editor
Considering
retirement
Mr. Ullman?
To the Editor:
For the first time in many
years. Al Ullman has a very
competent opponent.
In fact. Denny Smith has
become prominent enough
that Al Ullman is threatening
to buy a condominium near
Bend. Are you considering
retirement Mr. Ullman?
Twenty-four years in Wash
ington. D.C. is a long time.
Regardless of the outcome
of the election. I would like to
thank Denny Smith for mak
ing Al Ullman return to an
Oregon residency.
Yours truly.

Reporters
not robots
I read last week's "Letter to
the Editor" from Laura
McDougal with disgust.
Although I will defend her
right to voice her opinion, she
is also subject to criticism
when her words are printed.
There is a new style of
journalism being used today
called, "Interpretive Report
ing." A reporter can mix the
facts with opinion to make it
more understandable and in- '
teresting to the readers. The !
style of reporting just the facts .
has been absent for many '
vears.
i
How unbiased can a story
really be?
The fact that reporters are
humans and not robots means
that there will always be
feelings in a story. The
questions that are asked, the
way the answers are written,
and information that is not
even put in an article are all
determined by the reporter's
bias.
Imagine how dry a story
would be without bias. A
reporter could not say, "He
threw a nice pass," or "That
was a hard hit."
Reporters are professionals
and should be treated as such.
McDougal would not tell Tony
Dorsett how to run nor should
she leil anyone how to write in
a style that is no longer used.
If she is such an expert, why
doesn't she work for the
"Gazette"?
Sherry Cowett is a beginner
but she should not be told to.
"Turn in her reporters note
book." That could be like
telling Olga Korbett to quit
gymnastics the first time she
fell off the balance beam.
While I am writing, I would
like to congratulate the Hepp
ner Mustangs for passing the
ball so effectively last week.
I would also like to wish
Dennis Doherty good luck. He
is probably the county's best
official.
As for the recent passing of
the county budget, I say Don
McElligott and company are
lucky. If I was still in
Heppner, I would have fought
against it.
The reporters at the "Ob
server" would like Dorothy
Krebs to come talk to our
management to see if we can
get a 25 percent raise. We feel
we have been underpaid for
years too.
Krebs said a few weeks ago
not to vote the budget down at
the polls - but instead come to
the budget hearings because it
is less expensive.-
I spoke against it at a
hearing and wasn't listened to
so there goes her theory.
Back to my original idea for
a letter. The present owners of
the "Gazette-Times" are
lucky to have found sports
writers for high school games.
I couldn't get nny inst year.
My advice to them is don't let
the criticism bother you. Just
consider the source.

For Margo
Sherer
To the Editor:
I endorse Margo Sherer for
Morrow County Treasurer and
Tax Collector. When I held the
position of tax collector,
Margo was my deputy for
nearly three years. She is
honest, dependable and will
ing to work. She meets the
public well, is courteous and
pleasant to all taxpayers and
willing to help with any
problems they may have. She
also has some knowledge of
the treasurer's work because
for four years the two depart
ments were in the same office.
When the present treasurer is
gone for any reason Margo
does her work.
I hud to retire due to ill
health in October, the busiest
time of the year for the tax
office, and Margo was able
with untrained help to do all
the preliminary work before
collection, the collection, and
all the things that follow, such
as posting cash payment,
distributing money to the
various taxing districts, and
many more. She was able to
do all this and the books
balanced at the end of the
fiscal year.
After 24 ' years of exper
ience as tax collector I know
that to be quite an accomplish
ment. I am very proud of her.
I know her opponent is an
excellent bookkeeper, but she
does not know taxes. The
records in the tax office are
altogether different from any
other. They can only be
learned on the job. The duties
of the tax collector are more
than those of the treasurer. I
know Margo is capable of
doing the work of both offices.
I hope you will join me in
voting for Margo on Nov. 4. as
our next treasurer and tax
collector.
