up at BMCC
After the first day of classes
at Blue Mountain Community
College Sept. 29, enrollment
totaled 990 full time students.
This number is 76 more than
last year.
According to Registrar
Truman Baily, the new regis
tration process at the college
went smoothly. He foresees
the college repeating the
process next year.
Programs with heavy en

mechanics, diesel and heavy
equipment, nursing and civil

Top cowboys
vie at
PI rodeo.
Leaders among the nation's
cowboys are expected to vie
for a share of $25,000 in prize
money at the Pacific Internat
ional Livestock Exposition
rodeo at the Expo Center in
Portland Oct. 11-19.
An approved rodeo of the
Professional Rodeo Cowboys
Association (PRCA), the Pa
cific International PI) event is
staged in connection with the
traditional PI Horse Show.
Five standard rodeo events
will alternate with horse show
competitions in each of 12
performances.
Bobby Christensen, Eugene,
of Christensen Bros., stock
contractor for the rodeo, said
he expects about the same
lineup of cowboys as perform
ed in the 1979 PI Rodeo. That
lineup included leaders Tom
Ferguson of Miami, Okla.,
now the all-time rodeo money
winner, bull riders Jerry
Beagley of Kansas, Donnie
Gay from Texas and Tim
, Kierney from Broken Bow,
Nev. Deadline for signyp of
cowboys falls just five days
before the first matinee per
formance, Saturday, Oct. 11.
Horse show mounts as well
as open class and youth
division livestock will be
sheltered under 150,000 square
feet of tenting this year,
awaiting replacement of the
Expo Center's barn area. The
temporary change hasn't held
back exhibitors, according to
Clark Schenkenberger. gen
eral manager. Instead, the
1980 show will have a recent
record in numbers of sheep
exhibited with breeders of 15
breeds having entered a total
of 1.130 head, not including 4-H
and Future Farmers of Amer
ica animals.
Beef cattle entries are also
strong, Schenenberger said
with the Standard of Perfect
ion Polled Hereford show
attracting the largest number,
217. Angus cattle are also
strongly represented with 153
animals entered. There is
good representation of swine,
dairy goats, dairy cattle and
other beef breeds.
While most of the exhibitors
are from Oregon, Washington
and Idaho, the show draws a
scattering of exhibitors from
as far east as Connecticut and
the prairie provinces of Can
ada. The Connecticut entry is
from the University of Conn
ecticut, and is in the national
Shropshire sheep show.
The PI show will be open
daily from noon to 11 p.m. with
a $2.50-13.50 general admis
sion ticket providing entry to
all areas and entertainments.
Rodeo-horse show reserved
seats are $6 or $5 for senior
citizen rate.
Rodeo-horse show times are
7:30 nightly except for the
closing Sunday with 1:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday matin
ees. A country variety show
with clogging, blue grass
music and old time fiddling
will be presented daily at 3
and 8 p.m. in th Exhibit Hall
area.
