Haven't pf Did you know you can make a local or long distance phone call from any coin telephone in Heppner even if you don't have a dime? "Some people aren't aware of the fact that if they really need to make a phone call, in an emergency for example, they can do it without first depositing any money." says Linda Buckner. Pacific North west Bell manager. All Heppner coin telephones are engineered to provide a dial tone as soon as the receiver is picked up. she says. "That gives the cus tomer immediate access to an operator or to any local emergency public safety agency, such as the fire department or the police. "That also means the cus tomer can dial 9-1-1 from any Heppner coin telephone with out depositing a coin and without going through a PNB operator." There are several ways to place a coinless call on a coin telephone, Buckner says. "One of the most popular is with a telephone company credit card. That is especially true of business people on the road. It's a convenient way to bill calls to their business." Other options include call ing collect and charging the call to a third number, such as a home phone, the manager says. "A lot of people aren't aware you can also place a local telephone call without a dime," she says. "It's cheaper to drop in a dime, but if you don't have one, you can charge the call to a telephone company credit card or your business or home telephone number for 35 cents. Ten cents is for the normal coin call charge and 25 cents minimum helps support the expense of the operator." Buckner says PNB began converting coin telephones to Dial Tone First in 1972. Now. 99 4 percent of all PNB coin phone locations in Oregon have DTF service. And. the company expects to reach 100 ' percent DTF by early next year. Fven the term "coin tele phone" is somewhat of a misnomer, she says. "About 64 percent of all calls placed at coin telephone locations are made without using a single coin.
