TFA-Thp lloppner Gazette-Times, lleppner. Oregon. Thursday. Septeniltt r IflSil What happens when a whirlwind of a lady blows into town f She blew into town a few days 'ago. ..a vivacious grey haired lady. She came to tell a story about the timber indus try, and the "Women for Timber." an auxiliary group which supports the work of the industry. She met with the Chamber of Commerce, the Wheathearts. and Cowbelles. She told the local Resource Development committee about her group; visited with Forest Service officials, and toured the local lumber mill. She impressed a lot of people. There was a part of her story she didn't include, and it impressed me a whole lot more. Betty Dennison is the moth er of seven children, six girls and one boy. She has four County lamb pool sells This year's second Morrow County lamb pool sold Sept. 11 for 63'j cents per pound. Twenty-five producers sold 4T.0 lambs that weighed an average weight of 93.6 pounds. Only three of the producers were from Morrow County; the majority were from Uma tilla County (Pilot Rock. Pendleton. Hermiston. Stan field, Athena. Adams and Umapine). The lambs were graded by weight and finish by John Nordheim. Morrow County agent, into two grades : fat and medium. Medium lambs gen erally weigh from 85 pounds to 100 pounds, while fat lambs weigh in excess of 100 pounds. Swift, Chino, Calif., was the high bidder. The medium lambs were going to a feedlot in Utah while the fat Iambi were going on to slaughter ir Chino. The lamb pool is sold by telephone. The telephone live stock auction is simply a telephone conference of buy ers and the auctioneer repres enting the sellers. It helps stimulate buyer interest in other areas of the U.S.. since they are bidding on a truck load of lambs. This helps local producers receive the "nat ional" price, and also gives identical prices to the small producer and the large pro ducer. The lambs are graded on Monday or Tuesday before (he Thursday sale date. The 40 cents per-head grading fee was waived: the grading was a service of the Extension Service, John Nordheim charged each producer one cent per head to cover marking chalk. The . lambs are sold on Thurday. and shipping arr angements are made after the sale. This load of lambs was shipped the next Monday, Sept. 15. The PNW Livestock Producers Marketing Cooper ative. Inc., receives 85 cents per head for its role in coordinating loads and selling the Iambs. The lambs are . assembled at two points. Heppwr and Hermiston. where the truck comes to pick them up. Dick Wilkinson. Heppner. and Bob and Pat Hopper, Adams and Hermis ton scales, waived a 25 cent per head corral use fee. The shipping day was quite interesting with 24 producers bringing in lambs: the loading dock area was congested. Producers brought their sheep in via stock truck, goose-neck trailers, horse trailers, and yes. six even came in various parts of a compact station wagon.
