lone Cards return from opener with victory by Michelle LaRue The lone Cardinals traveled to Touchet. Wash., on Friday. Sept. 12. for the opening of (he 1980 football season, The Cards returned with a 34 22 victory. It was a battle between the Oregon Slate champs and the Washington State champs of last year. There was a lot on the line because both teams were looking to extend a winning streak. The Indians had an eleven-game winning streak and the Cards had a twenty-three-game winning streak. It looked like the Cardinals might be in trouble in the first quarter when Touchet scored first on a 19-yard pass from Chris Elsasser to Kurt Sieler. The touchdown was set up by an earlier 28-yard pass after Jone fumbled the ball back to Touchet on their first play from scrimmage, The extra points were good on a run by Flsasser to put the Cards down. 8-0. The Cardinals finally got on the scnrelmard late in the first quarter on a 2 yard run by Gregg Rietmann, A pass for the exlra points failed. lone drew first blood in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by Jeff Hams. The run for the extra points failed, but the Cards led 12 8. Touchet quick ly retaliated with a SSyard pass from Flsasser to end, Mike Esies, for a touchdown. The pass for the extra points failed but Touchet held the lead 14 12 The Cards took the ball over with 29 seconds left injhe first half A pass on first fV failed, then came a tumble recovered by (one's own Richard Ladd, But on the third down Hams hit Treve Peterson with a 58-yard scor ing strike. Rietmann scamp ered 58 yards to paydirt. Rietmann ran for the extra points to give the Cards a 20-14 halftime edge. It looked like the Cards might blow the game open early In the second half. On the first play scrimmage the lone line opened a big hole in the left side of the line and Rietmann scampered 58 yards to paydirt. The extra points were good on a pass from Hams to Peterson. Touchet came storming back to score again on a 7-yard run by Elsasser. Fl sasser then threw to Jeff Flowers for the extra points, making the score 28-22. The third quarter ended there. Early in the fourth quarter the Indians intercepted a Hams pass and mounted a drive to the lone 5-yard line. At that point Elsasser dropped back to pass and was wrapped up by Tim Patton. As he was going down Elsasser threw a desperation pass that was intercepted on a juggling catch by Rietmann who scampered 95 yards to pay dirt. A pass for the extra points failed. The Card defense then stiffened and forced the Ind ians to punt. The Cards took over the ball and proceeded to run out the clock for a 34-22 victory, their 24th in a row. Both teams committed cost ly errors and made first game mistakes The Cards comm itted four turnovers, losing two fumbles and having two passes intercepted. Other teams competing were Umapine. Stanfield. and Riverside. The teams played to fifteen points or eight minutes per game. The lone girls played nine games and won four. Coach Stefani said, "The team played really good. We showed lots of improvement, especially in setting and spiking." Coach Stefani cited Michelle LaRue and Sandra Thompson for their setting. lone had three girls scoring in double figures for the day, Anita Palmer. 15. Cindy Hill, 14. and Diann Morter, 14. Others playing were Michelle LaRue, 6, Margaret Doherty, 4. Sandra Thompson, 3, Janet Hams, 2, Ann Forwood, 1, Teena Lindstrom, l, Sylvia Ladd and Jamie Scalf. Sept. 20, at 5 p.m. Predicted squeaker ends in rout L - t'l f hv Sherrv Com HI A game that was supposed to be close turned into a rout Friday night as the Heppner Mustangs crushed Stanfield. 46-0 in the opening game of the season for both clubs. Doug Holland led all scoring for Heppner with 14 points, followed by John Murray with 12. John Bier with eight. Earl Hammon with six and Brett Sherer with six. Holland rushed for 140 yards in Ihe game, with Murray a close second with 106. Ham mon nailed down the longest run of the night, an 81 yard streak that also netted him a touchdown. Heppner couid seem to do no wrong as the defense reared its tenacious head and held the home team to a total of only 10-yard total offense for the night. The defending champion Mustangs' next encounter is against Riverside Friday. Edwards, brother of Debra J. Taylor of Route 2, Box 113B, Irrigon, has com pleted recruit training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. During the eight-week training cycle. Edwards stud ied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic occupational fields. Included in his studies were seamanship, close-order drill. Naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in Physical Education and Hygiene. Edwards joined the Navy in June, 1980.
