"A serious new wheat dis ease for this area has hit the higher elevation areas of Morrow and Gilliam County," the county extension office reports. At least four fields in Morrow and four fields in Gilliam counties were identif ied as having a disease known as fungus leaf stripe, or ceph alosporins stripe, o "It is a fungus that attacks the water conducting tissue of the plants, "says agent Harold Kerr. "The fungus over-winters in the soil on diseased wheat straw. The disease is identified by white stripes on the leaves during jointing and heading. The plants, at first glance, appear to be ripening, but on closer examination, will appear necrotic. At harvest time a large percent of the plants will be short and have blank heads up to 80 percent or more. The few good heads will be 68 inches taller and be normal. After harvest, the stubble will appear black or darkened as if it had bwn through a winter. "Clowning around" may soon have a new meaning for Morrow County 4-H members and leaders, reports John P. Nordheim . Morrow County Extension Agent. Because so many 4-H mem bers and leaders have ex pressed interest in clowning, a special workshop is planned for September 26-28 at the Oregon 4-H Center near Salem to train a team of two or three volunteers from each county, says Nordheim . The program, under the direction of Al Snider. Oregon State 1'niversity Extension 4-H youth specialist, and Nola Campbell, workshop coordin ator, say the workshop will be limited to 40 people. Persons from Morrow County interest ed in a (tending should register with the county Extension office by Sept. 15. Cktwning was introduced to Extension Service youth prog rams first as a way to teach nutrition to young people in the Expanded Food and Nut rition Education Program, says Snider. However, interest quickly spread beyond EFNEP as Extension agents and 4-H leaderssawclowningasa way to help young people and adults gain self-confidence, be creative, and overcome shy ness The fall workshop was planned to meet the demand for more information about such topics as creating a clown character, performing, clowning ethics, and incorpor ating clowning into existing 4-H groups as well as the background of clowning and how to work with 4-H'ers in clowning. As a follow-up to the workshop, regional meetings are planned for October 1 1 for county teams and Extension agents. Regularly on Wednesdays and Fridays J BirrliriP The answer was loud and clear throughout Oregon last year when the OSU Extension Service asked families to name their main concerns. People wanted help in learn ing how to conserve and manage the resources they have. They are concerned about the high cost of living, energy supplies, effective use of time, and how all of these affect their quality of life. These concerns are reflect ed in the emphasis of the Extension Service's Family Living-Home Economics Pro gram for the next two years. "Helping You Conserve Re sources" will be the major theme of the family living programs through 1982. While conserving and managing resources will be emphasized, not all programs will deal directly with conserving re sources as programs will continue to be offered which balance the program to meet a variety of educational needs and local interests. Family living programs for Morrow and Umatilla counties will kick off this fall with a training session offered on three topics simultaneously. Trainings will be offered for study group leader teachers and other interested persons on: "Getting the Most from Your Meat Money." "Discov er Your Local Heritage." and "Foods and Customs of Bang ladesh." Identical sessions . will be offered Sept. 16. First Christian Church. Pendleton, and on Sept. 17, Thompson Hall. Fairgrounds. Hermis- ton. Leader-teachers will re peat the lessons to groups during the three fall months. Leadership development training will be offered Oct. 1 in a special training for 4-H Leaders, study group mem bers. Sunday School teachers, members of any group, or for individuals. Instructor for the leadership workshop will be Marge Griffin. Vale. Ore., past slate president of Oregon Exjension Homemakers. and presently vice-president of the National Homemakers Coun cil. Fllowing closely during the fall months, special interest programs will be offered. "Potpourri." a special pre Christmas program designed to show home arts and money saving gift ideas will be offered Oct. 14 and 16 in Irrigon and Pendleton. "Pastas" will spotlight the food hit of the '80 s with ideas for low-cost meals using a wide variety of pasta, with demonstrations on such topics as making noodles in your food processor by hand, won tons. sauces, and other new and old foods based on pastas. November will be the month for "pasta." All Exten sion programs and trainings are open to all... .there is no membership restriction or cost to attend. 4-H. ..Starting All Over Again To get things moving ahead for the new 4-H year, a leaders meeting has been scheduled Thursday. Sept. 18. 7:30 p.m. at the Lexington School house. Plans will be made for events and activ ities within the 4-H program for the coming year. The meeting is a full membership, combined north and south Morrow Council meeting. It is hoped all leaders, and others interested in learning about 4-H leadership will attend. Enrollment materials for the '80-'81 year will be available for leaders at the meeting.
