Harrises enjoy
visit in Italy

Creth Harris says "We
never expected to go to
Europe, but we had a wonder
ful time." She and husband,
Darrel, spent August visiting
with their son Bob, a lieuten
ant in the U.S. Air Force, and
his wife, the former Betty
Angell of Hermiston, and their
son Brad, now six years old,
who are stationed at Aviano in
northern Italy along with
some 4.000 other Americans.
Only the single personnel live .
in military housing; Bob,
Betty and Brad and all others
live on the Italian economy.
Bob Harris, a 1967 Heppner
graduate, has recently comp
leted his master's degree in
psychology through Ball State
University. Bob was very near
his first degree at Eastern
Oregon State College when he
enlisted in the Air Force. The
day Creth and Darrel reached
the Venice Airport, after their
flight from Seattle via London,
Bob was in Spain, but his wife
and Brad met them.. Bob got
home that night. "
There are also several other
couples from Oregon, at
Aviano.
During the three weeks that
the Harrises planned to stay in
Europe they saw something
different almost every day.
They visited in Austria, saw
lots of castles, enjoyed the
play "Maximilian" at Trieste
and traveled around Venice by
canal boat on the polluted
water of its famous water
ways. Celebrating grandson
Brad's sixth birthday and
seeing him begin school was a
special delight of the visit.
Creth says there is no speed
limit in Europe and that many
Italians "drive like maniacs,"
especially on their freeways
which are all toll roads.
The night before they plan
ned to start home, Darrel had
to have emergency throat
surgery in the large, public,
Pordenone Hospital. The op
eration was performed by an
Italian surgeon, and Darrel
had four and one-half days of
very fine care. The complete
charge for his surgery, anes
thesia, all medications and
room totaled just $320. The
couple had to extend their visit
a week more than they had
planned, but reached their
home on Rhea Creek just
before Labor day.

David. April. Christopher
and Andrew Sykes spent a
busy Labor Day weekend
reuniting with David's family.
Friday they traveled to Port
land? spending the night with
David's sister and family.
Vickie and Charlie Lewis and
baby. Max. Saturday, the
Sykes and Lewises traveled on
to Roseburg to the home of
David's other sister and
family, Ardeen and John Clay
and sons, Jim, Alan and John.
Arriving at the Clay 's home on
Sunday were David's brother.
Charles Sykes, and his fiance,
Mary Jazuk, from Eugene,
and their father. Earl Sykes,
from Gardiner, Ore., near
Reedsport.
All attended a beautiful
ceremony at the Methodist
Church in Roseburg in which
John and Ardeen reaffirmed
the wedding vows they made
11 years ago on September 3,
1969. After the ceremony,
around 20 guests gathered at
the Clay's home for a wedding
reception, including cake, gift
opening and much celebrati
ion. Also celebrated were
Charles Sykes' 26th birthday
and David and April's 4th
anniversary, both on the third,
and Vickie and Charlie's 4th
anniversary, on the 10th.

the Alpha Tau Omega frater
nity at the University of Idaho
at Moscow.
Rietmann is one of around
328 U. of I men who received
invitations to join chapters of
social fraternities at the close
of the fall rush period.
