September 4. 1980 Scnbrs to visar Western Ho psreda Fridsy By Justine WeaUierford The Senior Bus will be taking folks to Pendleton to view the great, annual West ward Ho parade on Friday, Sept. 12. The reservations for seating on the bus are going fast-so those who want to go along, should contact Truman Messenger at his home tele phone immediately. The bus is committed to use first by the handicapped and by the eld erly, and then the first 18 who get their names on the list. The Quintra, green-and-white bus will be loading in front of the Heppner Neigh borhood Center at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. It will also pick up passengers at the 'Lexington school a half -hour or so later. The Heppner Mealsite Council met with Area Nutrit ion Director Suzanne Jepsen last week Tuesday. Mary Nickander was elected council president; Helen H in ton was chosen vice-president and Martha King, secretary. Mrs. Nickander announced that a special effort will be made this -fall to get more seniors to come to the dinners. Senior women are urged to come to the Thursday afternoon craft and social times, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Heppner Neighborhood Center. The lone mealsite council met with Suzanne Jepsen and Pat Brindle on Wed., Aug. 27. Doris Gollyhorn, the vice president, chaired the meet ing in the absence of President Jean Nelson who was in Salem visiting and attending the Oregon State Fair. Helen Martin is council secretary and also serves as program ? co-chairman with Frances Smouse. They announce that at Ione's second fall dinner, at 5 p.m. Sept. 10, in the United Church of Christ, every senior is invited to come early and visit. After dinner, about 5:40, pictures of Fred and Helen Martin's European holiday experience of June and July will be shown. Anyone of any age is most welcome to come see the Martin's pictures. Announcements that are of importance to seniors are made at the dinners. Every one enjoys the fellowship and visiting there and often inter esting programs are present ed before the meal. Last week V; jdnesday Irene Anhorn showed 20 slides obtained from the Washington State department of Geology and Natural Resourdes that pictured the great changes that have taken place at Mt. St. Helen's and its nearby territory. She also showed her collection of 28 different ash samples from the volcano which she gathered from locations in Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho. She had given the same program for the patients at the Hospital Nurs ing Home during the after noon. From now on this paper will not be printing the weekly menus. The state office has asked that the menus not be included any longer. Anyone who comes to the mealsites for dinner will still receive a very fine, nutritious, well-balanced meal for his or her donation. There are more than 1,000 senior citizens in Morrow County, yet only a small per cent are attending the meal sites at Irrigon, Monday at 5 p.m.. at Heppner at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and at lone at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. It is hoped that after the vacation months end, more seniors will come regu larly to enjoy meals together.
