The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is in operation for
it's fifth year at Camp Tupper. The Tuper YCC offers un
opportunity for youth. 15-18 years old. from all parts of
Oregon to contribute to preserving and maintaining the
natural resourses in the local Umatilla National Forest.
YCC is an integral work-recreation-learning program.
Environmental awareness activities are a part of a daily
work routine that help develop an understanding of the need
for the work project and its impact on the environment.
Recreational activities are also a necessity, lending meaning
to the YCC motto "Hard Work and Good Times." Weekend
trips, such as backpacking and river rafting were highlights
of this summer's activities.
The 20 enrollees and seven staff have contributed to the
development and maintenance of Bull Prairie and Penland
Lake recreation areas in the forest. Fire ring installation,
painting, traffic barrier installation and boat dock
coiimii uction are some of the projects that they completed to
benefit visitors to these areas.
Other projects in the local forest in the U.S. f orest Service
Heppner, Ukiah and Dale Ranger Districts have been
wildlife habitat improvement, trail construction, tree
thinning and transplanting, clearing firewood access areas
and barbed-wire fence roll-up and construction.
The staff at Tupper is made up of four crew leaders, Scott
Edgerton, Bob Case. Stephanie Lewis and Laura Brusven,
Environmental Awareness Coordinator Dino DeSimone,
Food Manager, Julie Roth, and Linda Jalbert, director.
