Harold Kerr expects grass
hoppers to be everywhere in
about a month especially
causing problems near homes,
gardens, and irrigated crop
lands. Kerr said after harvest is
completed, the then adult
grasshoppers will be flying to
areas near homes or to
irrigated cropland.
"There are a lot of grass
hoppers in concentrated
areas." Kerr said. "Spring
wheat and irrigated crops
may have to be sprayed."

cost, only the edges of the
fields were sprayed.
"The farmers had to pay the
entire cost of the spray
program." Kerr said. "Be
cause it was cropland, they
did not pet any help. This is
the first year we have had to
spray cropland. In the past,
the big spray programs have
been done on ranReland and
the cost was split oetween the
farmer, the state and the
federal government with each
paying one-third."
Kerr recommends that
gardeners use the chemical
"malathion" to protect their
gardens from the grasshopp
ers but warns that it only lasts
for two to three days so the
grasshoppers may come back.
He said malathion is the safest
product to use but it does not
last the longest.
About 330,000 acres of
rangeland were sprayed for
grasshoppers last year in
areas where it was just "full of
them" but those areas are
practically trouble free this
year. Kerr said. tu
- Kerr said the rainy weather
in recent weeks has been good
for the wheat in Morrow
County, which is 80 percent
soft white wheat that is used
for cakes, cookies and noodles
and is the major crop in the
county. T he rain makes the
wheat have fuller kernels and
have less protein, which is
desireable in the soft white
wheat. Soft white wheat that
has low protein of eight or nine
percent is better quality than
10 or 12 percent. The higher
protein content is desireable
in the red wheats that are used
for bread, he said.
The extension agent added
that the cool, wet weather has
created a "rust colored fungus
on the wheat which will reduce
the yield somewhat but the
fuller kernels should more
than make up for that loss.
Because of the cooler
weather, harvesting should
begin between July 10 and 15
depending on the wheat
farm's elevation-which varies
in Morrow County from 800
feet above sea level to 3,500
feet, Kerr said.
Kerr said the farmers would
like to see a higher price for
their grain as harvest season
nears. Last week it was $4 a
bushel in Portland.
The rain has caused some
problems for hay growers,
Kerr said. Hay that has been
cut is still down because it has
not warmed up enough to dry
the hay so it can be bailed.
Rain has delayed the second
cutting of land that has been
cut earleir in the year. All the
farmers can do is keep rolling
the hay until it dries so it can
be bailed. Once it is bailed,
"the rain won't particularly
hurt it," Kerr said.
Oregon and US.
"The Oregon farmer and
U.S. farmer are the only
farmers in the world suffering
from the embargo," said Don
Thompson, Moro farmer and
president of the Oregon Wheat
Growers League.
Thompson referred to the
Carter Administration's em
bargo of grain to the Soviet
Union, and the recent decision
to allow U.S. firms to sell
foreign grain to the Soviets.

store at 9:30a.m. and ends at

tion begins at Ruggs at 8:30
a.m.
Persons that need rides to ,
the starting point may go to
the lone City Park. Del's
Market in Lexington or the
Heppner City Park by 8:30
Saturday morning to be pick
ed up.

Pledge cards for the fund
raising event for the St. Jude's
Children's Hospital may be
picked up at the Bank of
Eastern Oregon in lone, Del's
Market in Lexington or Mur
ray's Drug store in Heppner
Participants that collect $25
or more receive a bike-a-thon
tee shirt and bike riders
that collect $75 or more in
pledges receive a backpack.
Grand prizes will be given to
the boy and girl that collect
the most money for the
hospital.
Lunch will be served after
the race at the lone City Park.
The Morrow County Search
and Rescue team will assist
the bike riders along the route.
Money raised from the
bik a-thon will go to the St.
Jude's Children's Research
Hospital which is a cancer
research institution where
child patients are attended to
free of charge.
