Heppner gardeners score in flower show

On July 4 and July 5 the two
garden clubs of Pendleton
arranged a standard flower
ahnw "The Centennial of
Flowers" as their contribution
to the commemoration of their
city's 100th birthday. The Dirt
Dabblers and The Pendleton
Garden Club, both members
of the Oregon State Federa
tion of Garden Clubs, Ind. and
the National Council of State
Garden Clubs, invited public
participation In the show at
the Hawthorne School, their
first public show since 1961.

Rawlins and Justine Weather
ford transported flower speci
mens and arrangements to
Pendleton on Saturday, and
each scored well. Heppner
Garden Club President Julia
Hill and her husband Harold
also attended the show, and
photographer Harold took
colored pictures of some of the
outstanding entries.
Alberta rated third place
ribbons for her miniature pink
rose and for her bachelor
buttons; Jane Rawlins' delph
iniums swept that competi
tion, and her mixed bouquet
was judged second In its class.
Justine's rose placed sec
ond, and she rated one first
and one second on her artistic
designs (flower arrange
ments ) . These three members
of the Heppner Garden Club
were the only Morrow County
residents who visited the
show.
Yesterday, July 9, Julia and
several others from Heppner
were in lone meeting with the
lone gardners hearing Julia's
report from the 19H0 state

A son, Phillip Adam, was
born to Susan and Felipe
Sanchez of Boardman on July
5, lfi. at 9:25 a.m. at the
Pioru-er Memorial Hospital in
Heppner.
Phillip weighed 7 lbs. 3-'oz.
His grandparents are Lewis
and Donna Thompson of lone,
and Vickie and Tony Sanchez
of Yakima, WA Great-grandmother
is Myrtle Thompson of
Dufur. OK
Camp slated
at EOSC
All Star Cheerleader Con
ference will conduct one of
their national cheerleader
camps at Eastern Oregon
State College in LaGrande the
week of August 4 to 8.
Heppner High School cheer
leaders are planning to attend.
The ASCC national instruc
tional staff of college cheer
leaders come from colleges
and universities all over the
United States to offer an
extensive program in cheer
leading technique, pom rou
tines, gymnastics, rules sem
inars, fund raising ideas,
mounts, spirit rallies, uniform
selection, etc. The ASCC staff
resides right in the dorm with
the girls and provides 24 hour
supervision and security.

and family. Vickie and Charlie
Lewis and baby, Max, of
Portland.
The Lewises and the Sykes
enjoyed a Saturday outing to
Bull Prarie Lake.

Next Monday, July 14, the
Heppner club will gather for
its monthly meeting in the
Main Street City Park. The
7:30 meeting, to which any
interested adult is invited, will
consider several coming pro
jects. They will hear about the
state convention and will
discuss plans for participating
in the Fair.

Vanessa Kay Tbw and
Daniel Ross Thompson, both
of lone, have announced their
engagement to be married.
Vanessa, 24, the daugfiter of
Ann and Bill Thew of Crane,
Ore., is a sixth grade teacher
in lone. Daniel, 23, the son of
Lewis and Donna Thompson of
lone is a ranch hand on the
Cheney Ranches in lone.
The couple plans an August
16 wedding in a pastoral
setting on the farm of the
bride's grandparents Henry
and Imogene T hew in Cove,
Ore. Hues of brown, orange
and gold and dried and fresh
flowers will set the scene for
Victoria "Tori" Crawford,
sister of the bride, will serve
as matron of honor, William
"Jr," Huquenin, an army
buddy of the groom, has been
chosen as best man.
The couple plans a weeklong
honeymoon trip to Arizona to
visit Dap's brother and other
relatives along the way.
