We offer our best wishes and hopes for bright futures to each young man and woman graduating from lone Heppner, and Riverside High Schools this year. We wish them all success! Livestock ihoic June 2 is the final date for youths planning to exhibit livestock at Morrow County Fair to enroll as 4-H members. Several young people have indicated they are involved in the proEram....but have not turned in enrollments as of this date. Right now we would like all 4-H leaders to review their membership list to be sure all names were turned in to the county office. Learning holiday Are you interested in taking a learning vacation? If so. you'll want to attend the 1980 Extension Mini-College on campus of Oregon State University June 16-20. Extension Home Economist Molly Saul states that the Mini College is jointly sponsored by Oregon State University and Oregon Extension Home makers Council. There is a wide choice of classes varying from academic to leisure time activities. Over 60 different classes are offered in almost every area of interest. Sub jects vary from Beginning Genealogy to Women. Tech nology and Change, to Food Preservation Basics to Investing in , a Time of Inflation. According to Mrs. Saul, Mini College is a chance for you to get away from every day cares, stretch your mind, make new friends and sample campus life at OSU. Because of the large number of people who volunteer their help, costs have been kept at a minimum. Tuition for full time partici pants, including room and board, is only $92. Meals are Public Notice outstanding, and rooms are all In a modern dormitory. The OSU Mini College features the annual meeting of the Oregon Extension Home makers Council. Mrs. Robin Fletcher. Pendleton, is a member of the OEHC Board, serving as state Cultural Arts Chairman. She is planning an art exhibit for the Mini College which will include a wide variety of arts and creative crafts. Mrs. Saul states that descrfp five brochures are available at all county Extension offices. The deadline to pre register is June 1. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Lumber grading seminar get A lumber grading seminar for sawmill employees throughout the region will take place the morning of May 31 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Kinzua Mill in Heppner. The seminar is part of an industry-wide quality control program put on by the Western Wood Products Asso ciation. The program will involve actual discussion of individual pieces of lumber and includes grading competition. Employees are expected from mills in Walla Walla and Klickitat. Wash.: Joseph. Cove. Elgin. LaGrande. Ba ker. Pilot Rock, and Pendleton and Heppner. Grasshoppers in large numbers are reported infesting cropland "all the way from Eight-Mile to North Lexington," according to Harold E. Kerr, Morrow County agent for the Oregon State University Extension Service. Most reports, he said, are of large numbers but in fairly small areas. There is no federal or state assistance available for eradicating grasshoppers on cropland, and for rangeland the minimum size entitled to government aid is a block of 10.000 acres. Kerr said. However, the Extension Service may try to coordinate aerial spraying so that neighboring plots of land as well as nearby canyon walls may be sprayed on a single flight by a commercial air applicator. "We are asking you to check your fields, particularly rangeland or scab land, to see if you have a problem," Kerr said. "Also, contact your neighbors to see if they have looked. If you and neighbors have concerns, call either the Extension office or your commercial applicator." Conservation field day State Conservation Field Day will be observed June 11 on Don and Jean Bennett's farm on Hinton Creek. They are this year's state conservation winners. Dr. Ernie Briskey, dean of the School of Agriculture at Oregon State, will be the main speaker for a program starting at 11:30 a.m. A steak barbecue will be served with both the Wheathearts and CowBelles assisting. An afternoon tour of the ranch is scheduled. Visitors are asked to take their 4-wheel drive pickups, as the tour route is too steep for trucks or buses. Delegations are expected from the Willamette Valley as well as the eastern Oregon wheat counties. What about a volcanic eruption? So far. Oregon has been out of the path of the ash fallout from Mt. St. Helens. But here is some information from the Extension Service, either on what to do should farms receive a deposit from a volcanic eruption or the effects of such a fallout. The list was mailed to Morrow County farmers last week. 1. If the crops are not smothered they should withstand the dust with no problem. 2. Mechanically removing the dust from a crop is better than washing it off. 3. If you use water, use plenty so the dust is well washed off. 4. A light sprinkle on the dust may cause some problems. 5. There should be no problems for cattle. 6. Horses would be affected first if there was a deposit on the foliage or on their skin. NOTICE TO WATER USERS Limited watering hours for yards and gardens will begin on June 1. 1980 and will be in effect until further notice. All watering should be done between 8:00 a.m. and 12.:00 noon and 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight. This method was used last year and was very successful for keeping a safe amount of water in our reservoirs in case of fire. We appreciate your cooperation.
