IMO Republican ballot has 3 for President, 4 challenge Packwood for Senator Nationally, on the Republican Party ballot, there are four candidates running for President of the United States. John B. Anderson, 58, has a graduate law degree from Harvard in 1949 and is a member of the U.S. House of Representa tives since 1960 from Illinois. Anderson is a "staunch" conservative who feels we cannot spend our way out of inflation but must cut spending and balance the budget. He has proposed a 50 cent tax on gasoline to cut consumption. He is a strong supporter of the Equal Rights Amend ment, environmental protection', national health care, housing and farm assistance, and on the subject of abortion feels it should be a decision made by a women, her God and her physician. George Bush, a Yale graduate in 1948, has been a director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Ambassador to the United Nations and a U.S. Congressman. He says President Carter blames inflation on the high cost of energy while Japan and Germany import more oil from the OPEC nations and they have still managed to keep inflation below five percent. He says there is a need for regional power, need for restoring America's military and need for tax reform to encourage saving. There will be two classes owner occupied homes and all other property. Under the limits, value of homes cannot increase more than five percent. If passed, the state will continue to pay 30 percent of the tax on a home up to $800. If the home is rented, the State will pay up to $400. The personal exemption on the personal income tax will stay at $1,000 up from $750. It will also limit the state spending so that it may not grow more than the growth of personal income. Ballot Measure No. 6 will allow a bond program for multi-family housing already in effect for the low-income elderly to include apartments, mobile home parks, cooperatives and condominiums. Cur rently, only rental housing is available for the general obligation bonding. County v Commissioner Dorothy Krebs. Box 336 in lone, is seeking election for a county commis sioner position. "Most of my work experience has been within accounting departments and has entailed everything from payrolls to accounts payable. "The people of Morrow County have a right to expect a high level of profession alism and integrity from the officials whom they place in office. These elected officials must reflect the will of the people, work for the good of the county and all who reside there. "My knowledge which has been gained by working for private enterprise, has given me a solid background not only in the technical operations vital to account ing procedures but also the ability to work well with other offices, agencies and individuals. "My involvment within the community has given me the opportunity to become acquainted with others on different planes and has contributed greatly to my attitudes and concern for the county as a whole entity. It is on this basis that I ask the voters of Morrow County to vote for Mary Martin in the upcoming election." Yt ; Ronald Reagan, former television star and California governor, is running for the Republican nomination for president. He says he took the eighth largest industrial nation in the world (California) that was in the red, turned it to black, balanced the budget and turned over a surplus to his successor. He turned back $5.7 billion in tax credits and rebates to California taxpayers. He stands for a tax cut for all people with a crack down on waste and a ceiling on spending. Reagan is in favor of the development of coal, nuclear power with safeguards, solar and wind energy. He does not believe in gun control but feels the serious crime problem needs to be handled with swifter and stronger enforce ment of the laws, including mandatory sentences for persons convicted of using firearms in crimes. Philip Crane is also on the ballot but did not submit any information for the voter's pamphlet or any other releases for the candidates page. Five Republican candidates are on the ballot for U.S. Senator. Rosalie Huss is critical of incumbent Bob Packwood for his vote to give the Panama Canal away, his position in favor of abortion and his anti-defense votes. Huss. 58. believes in a balanced budget and rebuilding our military strength. She said she would vote for a $40 billion across the board tax recduction. Brenda Jose says the U.S. is vulnerable militarily and she is alarmed at the secrecy of the voting records of many of our elected officials. She is a public relations consultant and a homemaker. She is vice chairman of the Oregon State Republican Party. Incumbent Bob Packwood has been an Oregon Representative as well as a U.S. Senator. He was bom in Portland and practiced law there for 10 years. He has been a member of the Senate Budget and Finance Committees. He has been a supporter of the Alternative Energy Act giving tax credits for homes and businesses. He wants a strong national defense and 100 percent reforestation of Oregon's forests. Willard D. Severn is a garage owner operator. Regardless of his personal feelings, he says he will vote in the Senate Dorothy Krebs in Eugene last September to learn about Morrow County's Comprehensive Plan ning. Krebs was a chemist before she was married and feels that has been useful in her dealings as commissioner with the Portland sludge project. She has been active in a variety of leadership positions in school, community, church and the sheep industry. She has been married to Henry Krebs for 30 years and they have lived in Morrow County all that time. Krebs has four children. Daughter Jane Brinkman. 26. attended Montana State University and is married to Ron Brinkman. a Burlington Northern engi neer. They have two children. Treve, 2, and Troy. 10 months. Son. Clinton, 25. is employed by Krebs Bros. Inc. of lone. He graduated from Oregon State University along with his wife. Maureen, in 1976. Son. Skye. 22. will graduate from O.S.U. in 1980 in general agriculture and plans to work for Krebs Bros, after graduation. Another son. Glen, 18. wil graduate from Ion High School in 1980 and plans to Merlin Merlin L. Cantin. 58. Rt. 2 Box 2358 in Heppner. is a candidate for county commissioner. Cantin is a former employee of 30 years of Pacific Northwest Bell and he managed the offices in Heppner. Lexington. lone and surrounding areas for seven years. He is now semi-retired as a part-time consultant in building trades. He has been a resident of Morrow County for 10 years. "I have only one regret." he said. "I wish I had come to Morrow County sooner." He is married to Inetia M. Cantin, an employee at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. They have four children. Linda A. Warnake is a housewife in Montana, Leslie M. Cantin is an architect in Portland. Sharon M. Withers is a housewife in Portland and Pamela S. Voltz is a housewife in Heppner and student in nurse's training at Blue Mountain Commu nity College. He is a high school graduate and has attended schools offered to him by the military and telephone company to broaden his education. He served with the 8th Air Force air crew during World War II. "I will work for and communicate with the people of Morrow County," he said. "Pioneer Memorial Hospital must be saved. An elective hospital board would be responsive to thejwblic and taxpayers who elect it. The county court appoints it . the way the people who put him into office want him to vote. Kenneth Alexander Brown is also on the ballot but he did not submit anything for publication, and he was not listed in the voter's pamphlet. . Leonard George Roth, a retired farmer, is a candidate for the 2nd District seat as a Representative in Congress. He wants to reduce waste in foreign aid, reduce taxes, sustain timber supplies, and revise all wilderness areas to multiple use. Denny Smith is running against Roth in the Primary. He is a newspaper publisher and former pilot for Pan-American Airways. He has a B.A. in Political Science from Willamette University. He says governments own deficit spending is the cause for inflation. He is for free enterprise with fewer government restric tions. He believes in a strong national defense. Harvey R. Forester is a medical doctor, physician and psychiatrist. He has college educational training in geology, medicine, law and theology. He wants to abolish the income tax, end energy waste and protect the environment. Norma Paulus is a former State Representative and is running for re-election for the position she was elected to in 1976. She was an appellate lawyer from 1962-76 and has her law degree from Willamette University where she gradu ated with honors in 1962. Incumbent Clay Myers is running for re-election for the State Treasurer. He is a former Secretary of State for 10 years and has had 16 years of banking experience prior to that. His investments of Oregon money totaling $3.1 billion have brought the State interest earning to $500,000 to $900,000 daily, more than any other treasurer in the state's history. George YVingard is a businessman and a former State Representataive and State Senator for Lane County. He was the Assistant Minority Leader in the Senate in 1977. He lives in Eugene and promises to be tough minded in his management of Oregon's money making investment for the people. Dave Frohnmaver is one of four Republican candidates running for State Attorney General. He is a native Oregonian. 39. who graduated with honors attend Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls next year Krebs graduated with a harhelnr of arts degree from OS 1' in 147. Her major was chemistry. She graduated with honors and went on to obtain a master's degree from O.S.U. in 1(MH with a major in analytical chemistry. Before she was married. Krebs was on the staff at O.S.U. assigned to Agricultural Chemistry doing research in animal nutrition and biochemistry. She has been a housewife for the past 27 years. "I am acutely aware of taxes and how they are constantly rising to rut into profit margins." Krebs said. "Morrow County has both problems and potential. 1 will accept the challenges from tach with enthusiasm. I solicit support so that I may continue to serve Morrow County." Krebs is the secretary-treasurer of the East Central Oregon Association of Counties, vice chairman of the E.O.S.C. Regional Services Institute, and a member of the Public Lands Committee Associa tion of Oregon Counties. Cantin Merlin Cantin now but has exercised no control over it. "Roads can no longer be maintained by the county road crews because of their rundown condition. A road levy over a period of years may be the only solution. "An ore realistic look -ifiould be taken at the wages for county officials. It is a delicate subject, especially to those affected. The taxpayers must be taken into consideration for he .s being asked to foot the bill. The county court has picked a very poor year to try to undo in one year what has accumulated over many years. "I will strive to remove the feelings of north-south Morrow County and to ask the people of the county to become more involved in their county government. LJ w4 1 I XJJH from Harvard. He is a current State Representative and a Professor of Constitutional Law. He is endorsed by the Oregon Council Police Association and favors mandatory prison sentences for crimes involving firearms. He supports the lobby disclosure law, open meetings and freedom of the press. He has Absent ballots available Registered voters in Morrow County can obtain an absentee ballot from the County Clerk's Officejn Hepper if they think, for any reason, they will not be able to vote at their proper precinct polling place May 20. Voters must apply in writing or in person at the clerk's office. The absentee ballot must be returned to the county clerk for counting no later than 8 p.m. May 20. Now an independent While Congressman John B. Anderson of Illinois has withdrawn from the Republi can presidential race, he is continuing his campaign for the presidency as an independent. A letter from Anderson states that he is voluntarily returning $307,000 in campaign matching funds to the federal treasury. "As of today (April 30), I will no longer seek the Republican nomination," his letter says. "That nominating process is in the grip of a narrowly based group advocating Ronald Reagan." He adds that he does not believe the former California governor represented "the larger interests of the country" nor of the Republican party. He also says that President Carter has lost the confidence of the nation. Anderson's withdrawal from the Repub lican presidential contest came too late to remove his name from the Oregon ballot.
