Thursrlav, May I. lisn French hits , comment to avoid beef H OB 0 D U UD 13 D 6S II ut : '1 ii i Ray French of Heppner, president of the 3,400-member Oregon Cattlemens Associa tion has sent a telegram to President Carter demanding a public retraction from the administration's economic ad visor, Alfred Kahn, for a statement he made on the NBC 'Today' show urging consumers to cut out beef purchases. , French told the President that this was a disservice not only to the cattle producers of Oregon and the nation, but also to the consumers as well. The comments which an gered cattlemen throughout the country were made by Dr. Alfred Kahn on last Friday's NBC Today show. He was asked to comment on what individuals could do to combat inflation. Kahn said that consumers should buy fuel efficient cars, walk more, ride bicycles, "Cut out beef and switch to chicken and pork." French added that this type of economic advice from the President's economic advisor was not only ridiculous, but a slap in the face to every cattleman in Oregon and throughout the United States. The OCA President informed Carter that retail beef prices today are lower than they were in the spring of 1979 and 1978. He said beef prices today are a good consumer buy. In his telegram he asked the President if the so-called "fuel-efficient cars, and bicy cles, which Kahn advised consumers to buy, were cheaper this spring than last." The cattlemen's president further informed Carter that, "Cattlemen today are some of the hardest hit victums of inflation and interest rates in this nation. The beef cattle industry is already in a state of severe depression - as a result of escalating costs and cattle prices which are sharply lower than a year ago. The beef cattle industry has not asked for government price supports, and we don't intend to. This is why we are especially outraged at your economic advisor's unwarran ted attack on our industry." French concluded his tele gram to the president by stating that either he or Kahn make a public retraction of his "cut out beef" statement because it was an affront and disservice to all cattlemen and extremely misleading to con sumers. Raft race get at La Grande The annual Eastern Oregon State College Vet's Club Raft Race from Hilgard Park to La Grande is scheduled for May 3. After much discussion, the Vet's have decided not to sell bt-er during and afler the event . "We'd like people to feel comfortable bringing their families." said Vet's Club President Lou Gerber. Besides the beverage policy, the Vet's have planned other changes. "This year we're starting in heats." said Gerber. explain ing that the mass start last year was congested and con fusing He said five different classes will run in separate heats beginning five minutes apart. The canoes and kayaks will start at 10 a.m.; rubber rafts at 10:05: powder puffs at 10:10: single tubes at 10:15: and homemade rafts at 10:30. There will be bonfires to warm rafters and trophies will be presented after the last heat. A Bar-B-Que will be in he nparbv Riverside Park. Any interested person mav enter the race. Entry fees range from $5 for the home made class to $1 for the Powder Puff class. Registra tion blanks are available at the Vet s Club Office in EOSC Hoke College Center, room 31 1, or the morning of the race between 6:00 and 9:30 a.m. at the Hilgard Park starting point. Boating guide released A brochure titled "A Guide to Oregon Boating Facilities" has been published by the Oregon State Marine Board. The pamphlet is designed to provide information on the location and types of boating facilities available throughout the state. The publication is being distributed by the Oregon State Marine Board.
