has been repaired and 45-year
ice cream maker. Dud Tash,
is back so Pride of Oregon ice
cream is on the grocery
shelves again.
Problems with equipment
have caused the ice cream
making portion of the cream

Expect baby tooth by

As our children are develop
ing in the womb, a grossly
disfigured and frightening
figure appears with its folds
and wrinkles. From the fusion
of these folds comes the dental
arches which contain the tooth
buds, the future baby and
adult teeth. The baby tooth
buds begin to form their
prospective teeth about six
weeks in the womb.
It is often asked if the
mother takes fluoride during
pregnancy whether this will
help baby teeth to be strong.
Fluoride does not cross the
barrier between baby and
mother. There are certain

chased the creamery along
with Hager's Dairy last July.
The creamery has been
around for 60 years and was
first owned by the Cox family.

pre-made mix of butterfat
from the Mayflower company
Oregon ice cream in the 10-gallon hatch freezer.

The mix is poured into a 10
gallon "batch" freezer that
can make 10 gallons of ice
cream at a time. Flavoring is
added and then a mixture of
air is added to make it fluffy.
Tash mixes the air into the
mix to get the proper weight.
"Air determines if it is too
heavy or too light of a mix,"
Sweeney said.

cream is freezing.
Brian Sweeney empahsized
that the creamery makes a
"premium" ice cream with 12
percent butterfat rather than
the usual eight to 10 percent.
The ice cream is sold mainly
in half gallon plastic contain
ers but restaurants buy it in
three gallon burrels.
"We sell all we can turn out
as fast as we can make it,"
Sweeney said. "It has quite a
reputatio and women love the
plastic containers and would
scream if we quit using
them."
Sweeney said ice milk from
the creamery is top quality
with 3.8 percent butterfat
while most ice milk is one or
two percent.

late, strawberry, vanilla, pe
can, raspberry ripple, maple
nut, sherbert, English toffee,
peppermint stick, and another
flavor that varies according to
demand.
Since they cannot get cream
locally anymore, butter is not
made at the creamery. They
do sell crushed ice along with
the ice cream and Mayflower
Products.
The Sweeneys added a
loading dock to the creamery
last summer but that is the
only major change they have
made since they have owned
it.
As far as he knows, Sweeney
said the Heppner creamery is
the only small otie left in
eastern Oregon.
"We make it the same way
todav as thev did 25 years
ago," he said.
