Dennis Stefani was first In the long jump at 19-6, Robin La Rue first in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.8 econds and the 400 meter relay team of Duane Fetsch. ONIONS IVAIWV.'AIWOW 10 ID U.S. 7 M 2 U M If lone girls win Kate Gutierrez won her first singles match and teamed with Martha McElligott to win the first girls doubles match as Ione's girls beat Riverside 2-1. The boys team did not fare as well as Riverside won 3-1. Gutierrez won in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1. McElligott lost her second singles match 7-5, 7-7 losing in a 12-point tie breaker, and 3-6. The two combined to win 6-2 and 6-4 in the doubles match. For the boys, Scott Daniels of Riverside easily handled Ione's first singles player Mike Levitt 6-0 and 6-2. Duane Fetsch lost in second singles to Pirate Greg Tarpen ing 6-1 and 6-0. Freshman Troy Lindstrom Todd Sherer was first in the 400 meters with a time of 54.9 seconds and also first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.8. Heppnr showed its power in the long-distance race, the 1500 meters, as the Mustangs had the top three finishers. Larry Palmer was first at 4:37.2. Dan Nix was second at 4:41 and Jari Alasuvanto third at 4:51. Alasuvanto was third in the 800 meters with a tie of 2:24.5 and Jones was third in the 200 meters with a time of 25.3 seconds. Heppner's 400 meter relay team was third with a time of 48.9 seconds. Umatilla was third in the team standings with 82 team points. Riverside was fourth with 69 and Stanfield last with 14. 10. 1 M X picked up the only Cardinal win as he won in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1. In the only boys doubles match, Levitt-Fetsch won 6-3, lost 3-6 and lost the third game in a tie breaker after the game score tied at 6-6. In the match against Stan field Saturday, Lindstrom won again in third singles in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1 but the rest of the team lost. Coach Duane Payne said his team was decimated by play ers that went on the band trip. He said all of the boys games were close with some being decided by tie breakers. The girls were "clobbered" in the singles matphes but came back in the doubles match to lose in split sets, Payne said. Clark leaves for Boston Marathon Heppner Grade School teacher Andy Clark left for Boston yesterday where he will participate in the Boston Marathon Monday, beginning at noon. He said from 4,000 to 7,000 runners from across the states are expected to participate. Clark said he is going to be staying with relatives who live in the outskirts of Boston. He said the runners will be seeded according to their qualifying times so they have to line up for the race two hours early. As it seems marathoners won't be going to the Olympics, Clark said he expects all of the best long-distance runners in the nation to be there. Clark plans to be back teaching school next Thursday.
