April 3. 1980 FIVE Riverside's Wilson tosses no-hitter at Heppner Sports Schedule o Heppner and lone High Schools haye another full slate of athletic events scheduled for the next week. The Mcppner varsity base ball team travels to Pilot Rock Saturday to play in an invitational with the first of two games scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Heppner 'it track team will participate in the Condon Invitational Saturday at It a m. in Condon with hoth boys and girls competing, The JV baseball team plays at Roarriman against River side High School at 4 p.m. Monday. Huddleston steal in overtime leads to 69-68 win Mark Huddleston made a steal and drove the length of the court sinking a faslbreak bosket with one second left in overtime to lead 1-averne Van Marter's Heppner City Bas ketball league team to a B9-68 come from behind victory over Steve Powell's team. In the other semi-final game, Jim Lankford's team beat Don Barber's squad 75-50. After trailing at the begin ning of the game. Powell's team came back to take a 19 12 first quarter lead and led 38-20 at halftime. Powell had 12 and Brent Fggars 12 at the half while Bill Meyers bad eight and Dana Heidamann seven Huddleston led his team with six. Hut Van Marter's team whittled away at the lead in I'he third quarter stopping the two guards on Powell's team from scoring and outscoring them 17 12 in the third period to cut the leud to 4tt 43. Poor free throw shooting, some questionable calls and the fouling out of Powell's big man Meyers with five minutes left in the game aided Van Marter's fourth quarter come back The game was tied 65-G5 at the end of the fourth quarter but Heidamann scored a three-point play to open the overtime period as Powell's team took the lead 68-65. Tbe team kept the lead until the final second of the game. l Powell's team lost it at the "foul line as Van Marter outscored them 15-10. Bowling Sparetitner's League Morrow County Grain Growers is in first place in the Sparetimer's Bowling League with a 30-18 record. Coast -to-Coast is second at 28l-.-l'a, Petersons third at 27 21. Jerry's Mobil fourth at 25 23, Sears fifth at 24-24, Gardners sixth at 23-25, Central Market seventh with a l'.-28'a record and Buck nums last at 15-33. Vonnie Iovgren bowled the high individual game of the week with a 198 and Inetia Cantin rolled the high indivi dual series with a 520. Morrow Keglers Weary Wives is on top in the Koffee Kup Keglers League with a 31-13 record. That team is also first in total pins with 17,002. Three L's is second with a 2ti 18 record and is third in total pins with 16,900. The Dregs team is third at 25la-18'a and is fourth in total pins with 16,876. The Gutter Dusters and the Pytts teams are tied for fourth place with 21-23 records but the Gutter Dusters team is second in total pins with 16,967 and the Pytts team is last In total pins with 16,595. The Three Holers team is sixth in the league standings with a record of 18' a-25'v and is also sixth in total pins with 16,721. The Hi Ho's team is seventh in the league at 17-27 and fifth in total pins with 16,804 and the Newcomers team is in last place at 16-28 and is seventh in total pins with 16.601. ' Next Tuesday the boys and girls track teams will compote with teams from Umatilla, lone, Stanfield and Riverside in a 4 p.m. meet in Umatilla. That same day the varsity baseball team will play River side in Heppner with a starting time of 4 p.m. Heppner's varsity golf team will have its first home match of the year April with the boys and girls competing against Umatilla at 1 :30 p.m. The lone track team for both boys and girls will compete Saturday at Condon with the meet scheduled to begin at 11 am. Huddleston led all scorers with 22 and Dirk Dunlop scored 14. Mike Stookey 13. Van Marter eight. Frank Pearson six. Bob Greene four, and Paul Van Marter two for the winners. Heidamann led the losing team with 18, Powell and Meyers scored IB each, Eg gars had 12, Greg Tullius and Robert Schultz three apiece and Mike Doherty and John Nordheim played but did not score. Powell finished the season at 10-5. In the other game. Lank ford's team jumped to a 21-12 first quarter lead and in creased it to 44 24 at halftime. Dave McLachlan led the team with 21 points at halftime. In the second half. Barber's team held Lankford's to 11 points in the third quarter to make it 55-34 at the end of three periods. Barber's team scored 16 in tbe fourth period while Lank ford's had 2(1 to make the final 75-50 McLachlan ended the game with31.Lankford had 18, Dave Allstott 14. Lee Padberg 11 and Darryl Billow two. Dave Kckman led the los ing team with II points, Dan Coiner had 10. John MeCabe 10. Barber nine. Mike Rowell eight, and Dan Akers two. Barber finished the season at 78 The championship game will be played this Sunday at 6 pm. with Lankford (14-1) playing Van Marter (12 3). County Grain Growers had the high team game with 748 and Coast to-Coast had the high team series with 2.121. Hazel Reid and Verna Brinda made the 5-7 split. Karen Palmer the 5-10 and Ramona Rountree the 5-8 10. Petersons is first in total pins with 25.552. M.C.G.G. is second at 25,146, Coast to Coast third with 25.068. Jer ry's Mobil fourth with 23,392, Central Market fifth with 23,189, Sears sixth with 22.444, Bucknums seventh with 21,978 and Gardners last with 21,048. League Faye Ruhl bowled the high game of the week with a 192 and also the high series with 473. The Newcomers had the high team game with 580 and the Pytts had the high team series with 1.596. Riverside won the game 2-1 with Riverside getting three hits and committing four errors and Heppner having three errors. Heppner's only run came tn the first inning whn Dale Holland walked. Doug Holland walked. John Bier got on base on an error and Tim Hedman walked to force in a run. Riverside got its two runs in the third inning on a walk, an error and a triple by McKen- zie. m' '- A Heppner Junior High batter takes a cut at the ball in last week's game with Riverside which the Ponies lost 8-1. Riverside beats Heppner golf ers Joe Daltoso of Riverside High School shot a 71 for the low score of the day to lead Riverside High School to a 306-303 win over the Heppner boys golf team March 27 at the Willow Run Golf Course in Boardman. Heppner and Riverside both beat Umatilla, who did not field enough players so they could not obtain correct scor ing. Don Lott and Jeff Edmund son shot the low scores for Heppner with 18-round scores of 75, Curt Day shot a 77. Mike Lott an 82. Dorian Forrar an 85 and Dean Skillicorn a 92. The top four scores are combined for the team score and the low team score wins in golfing competition. Other members of the golfing team under Coach Duane Nieffer are Darrel Miles. Shane Laughlin. Bryan Kerr, John Sumner and David Orr. Heppner's girls team beat both Riverside and Umatilla in the same golf match. Bier came in to pitch in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs but he got out of the Jam with a pop up and a double play. Heppner had a chance to tie the game in the sixth inning when Doug Holland got on second base after a two-base error but he was thrown out at the plate after trying to sneak in after a bunt by John Murray. Heppner lost to Weston-Mc-Kwen Saturday in Heppner 9-1 with a second game canceled because of bad weather. Weston McKwen dominated the game with the highlight for Heppner coming in the fourth inning when Dale Holland came in with the bases loaded and no outs to pitch. The baiter hit a shot to left field and shortsthop Doug Holland made a great catch and Heppner then doubled off two base runners for a triple play. "It wasonly the second one I ever saw," Coach Holland said. Heppner scored in the third inning when Dale Holland Bergstrom had a 5fi for the team score of 202.
