March 27. 1980 City semi-final Matures Lankf ord vs Barber, Powell vs VanMarter Roger Britt's team upset Mike Smith's squad 46-42 in Heppner City Basketball League play last Sunday to keep Smith's team from participating in the city tour nament that begins this Sun day. Bill Morris scored 13 points and Britt 12 to lead the victors. Ron Green led the losing team with 10. It was only the second win of the year for Britt as the team finished tied for last place with Les Schwab with 2-12 records. If Smith's team won. it was going to have a playoff with Don Barber's team as both squads would have tied for fourth place with 7-7 records. Smith finished at 6-8 and in fifth place. Bill Meyers scored 31 points and Dana Heidamann 18 to lead Steve Powell's team to a 66-44 win over Rick Johnston. Gary Van Arsdale scored 12 and Dave Mitchell 13 for the losing team, which finished the season at 5-9 and in sixth Cardinals to have larse team says coach The lone High School track team began practicing this week under Coach Gordon Meyers getting ready for tomorrow's opening meet against Wahtonka. The Cardinals have a large team returning as Coach Meyers "did not lose any body" from last year. He will have 10 girls and 15 boys on the team. Golfers gather to work on club A work party is scheduled for March 29 at the Willow Creek Country Club starting at 9 a.m. All members are urged to participate and are asked by Harold Kerr to bring rakes, paint brushes and shovels. Sandwiches will be pro vided. A kick-off breakfast for the men golfers is planned for March 30 beginning at 8 a.m. Guests and prospective mem bers are encouraged to attend. Bowling Sparetimer's League Morrow County Grain Growers is in first place in the Sparetimer's Bowling League with a 27-17 record with Coast-to-Coast second at 26M 17'? and Petersons third at 26-18. Sears and Jerry's Mobil are tied for fouth place with 23-21 marks. Gardners is sixth at 20-24, Central Market seventh at l6VZ7'ie and Bucknums last at 14-30. Fran Crook rolled the high Keglers League The Weary Wives team has opened up a good-sized lead in the Koffee Kup Keglers Bowl ing League with a 30-10 record, compared to the second-place Dregs team at 24'2-15'2. The Three L's team is third at 23-17 and the Gutter Dusters and the Pytts are tied for fourth place with 18-22 marks. The Three Holers team is at 171..221,, the Hi Ho's team is 16-24 and the Newcomers team is 13-27. Billie Doherty rolled the high game of the week with a 186 and the high series with place. Don Barber's team beat Les Schwab 56-48 with John Mc Cabe scoring 20, Mike Rowell 16 and Barber 11 to lead the way. Kevin Rountree scored 14 and Gino Guglielmelli 10 for the losers. Jim Lankford's team beat Laverne Van Marter 86-56. The league's second-leading scorer, Van Marter, was out with an ankle injury. Mike Stookey picked up the slack scoring 25 points and Mark Huddleston added 18 in the losing cause. For the winners, Dave McLachlan scored 20, Lee Padberg 19, Dave Allstott 16, Jim Lankford 16, and Darryl Bigelow 14. This Sunday's playoff action will match Powell (10-4) against Van Marter (11-3) in the 6 p.m. game and Lankford (13-1) against Barber (7-7) in a 7:30 contest. Teams are asked to bring $10 each to pay for officiating. The games will be played under high school rules. Seniors returning from last year include Jerry Rietmann, who went to state in the pole vault; Mike Conklin, who ran the hurdles: Robin La Rue. who also competed in the hurdles: Larry Snider, a long-distance runner; and Terry Starr, a shot putter and discus thrower. Returning female seniors are Brenda Patton and Kim Pettyjohn. Both competed in the sprints. Juniors on the boys track team are Duane Fetsch, who ran the sprints last year; Shawn La Rue. a middle-distance runner; Gregg Riet mann, a long and triple jumper; and Les Thompson, who ran the hurdles and competed in the pole vault. Lisa Meyers, a distance runner, is the only returning junior on the girls team. Basketball rematch forlone, Heppner Lions astride donkeys Donkey basketball is com ing to Heppner High School's gymnasium April 3 at 7:30 p.m. with the Heppner Lions Club going against the Lion donkey riders from lone. The Cardinal city team beat Heppner earlier this year in a high scoring affair 2-1. Ticket prices are $2.50 for adults. S2.25 for students and Activities planned for golfers By Linda Shaw Despite the unpredictable weather these days, many golfers have found the time (and the occasional bit of sunshine) to get in a few rounds. Sharon Harrison, club trea surer, reports that members are beginning to send in their dues for the coming season. This is appreciated because it saves the time and expense of billing later. The board of directors of the Willow Creek Country Club has also been busy working out the schedule for the summer's golfing activities. Again this year, inter-club visitations, family barbecues, men's individual and team play, Ladies' Days, and tour naments will be on the agenda of special events. Members will soon receive a schedule of these activities. If a student plays on a school golf team and does not pay a student membership or have a membership as part of a family unit, he can only play in connection with the golf team. They are Kellie Hammond, Margaret Kincaid and Mary Kincaid. There are no seniors on the team this year. Juniors are Bonnie Arring ton. Hammond, Kincaid and Paula Palmer. Sophomores are Mary Kin caid and Vicki Smith. Freshmen are Marti Baker, Sherry Clement, Suzie Jacobs, Kim Miller, Ann Murray and Lisa Wilson. "I am pleased with the turnout because we had only five on the team last year," Conklin said. Arrington is a sprinter. Hammond was fourth at district in the javelin and sixth at district as a shot putter last vear. Heppner has been practic ing for two weeks and already Holland thinks he will have a sprinting, her coach said. "We are expecting a lot from her," Conklin said. "She has already broken the school record in the javelin this year in practice." Margaret Kincaid will be a sprinter and run the hurdles. Palmer is a long-distanct runner which is unusual for Heppner High School's girls team, Conklin said. "Last year was the first year we had a girl run the distance races," Conklin said. Mary Kincaid is a high jumper who finished third at district last year. Smith is a middle distance runner. Baker and Gement compete in the throwing events but they "both are young and need to work on their technique," Coach Conklin admitted. Jacobs is a sprinter and will run relays. Miller runs the hurdles. Murray is a jumper and a sprinter and Wilson will run the distance races. "It is nice to have a lot of girls turning out." Conklin said. "Once the pitching matures, we will be tough," he said. Holland has a "real young team" with only five letter men returning. They include John Bier, Doug Holland, Rick Cole, John Murray and Dale Holland. All five of those players wil be the varsity pitchers since Coach Holland has lost his entire pitching staff from last year.
