Riverside Pirates win State Class A championship Coach Larry French and the Riverside High School Pirate basketball team came ip with two upsets over Karrisburg 46-61 and Enterprise 41-36 to take the boys State Class A championship. The team also beat. Culver 40-35. Riverside was without two of its starters, Stacy Coleman and Steve Daulton, for most of the tournament as both play ers were injured in the first game against Harrisburg. Without two of his top scorers, French decided to slow down his usually high scoring squad and concentrate on playing a tight zone defense. During the regular season. Riverside was known as an offensive team but to the surprise cf many, was second in the Columbia Basin League in defense. It was defense that won the district tournament for River side as the team upset Pilot Rock and Weston-McEwen so Coach French decided to stick with that defensive philoso phy. The defense was especially evident in the Enterprise game as Riverside shut down the explosive Savage offense. Coach French conceded the offensive boards to Enterprise so instead of having his players crash the offensive boards when a shot went up, he had the team get quickly back on defense to slow down the fastbreaking Savages. It worked as Enterprise had to slow down its game and was ineffective with this new approach and could not score. Enterprise was held to 36 points in the game and the team's previous low this year was 63 points. The game was close throughout as Riverside took a 10-9 lead at the first quarter break and led 22-21 at half time. The crucial third quarter proved to be crucial for both teams as Enterprise took the lead 26-22 and then Riverside Lankford and VanMarter battle again Sunday Dana Heidamann scored 23 points. Bill Meyers 20 and Steve Powell 12 leading Pow ell's team to a 60-45 win over Mike Smith's team. Ron Green led the losing team with 14 points. Laverne Van Marter scored 28 point to lead his team to a 66-53 win over Don Barber. Mike Stookey added 12, Bob Green 10 and Dyrk Dunlop 10. Akers led the losing team with 14. Dave Eckman had 13 and Mike Rowell 10. Rick Johnston's team beat Les Schwab 60-57. Tim Adams scored 18, Gary Van Arsdale 15, Dave Mitchell 16 and Ted Toll 10 for the winners. Tom Pointer led the losing team with 25 points and Kevin Rountree had 14. Jim Lankford scored 28 points to lead his team to a 53-42 win over Rodger Britt. Dave Allstott added 1 1 points. Roger Britt had eight points Donkey game April 3 There will be a Donkey Basketball game April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Heppner High Gym. The game will pit the Heppner Lions against the lone Lions. It will be sponsored by the Heppner High School Athletic Department and the Heppner Lions. The proceeds will be used for the many Lions activities and the athletic portion will be put toward the purchase of girls athletic uniforms. Pre-sale ticket prices are $2 for adults, $1.75 for students and children $1. At the door, tickets are adults $2.50, students $2.25 and children $1.50. To purchase tickets, contact any Lions Club member or buy them from John Sporseen at the high school. and Rick Britt also had eight to lead that team. In the final regular season action this Sunday, Lankford (12-1) plays at 5 p.m. against Van Marter (11-2), Barber (6-7) plays at 6 p.m. against Schwab (2-11), Powell (9-4) takes on Johnston (5-8) in the next game at 7 p.m . and Smith (6-7) plays at 8 p.m. against Britt (1-12). The top four teams in the league will begin playoffs next week. Teams are reminded that the $10 team fee must be paid by this Sunday's games. ran off 10 straight points ending with a scoop shot by Gary Gordanier as the Pirates again led 32-26. The Savages comeback in the fourth period fell short. Lerry Wilson, who has starred for Riverside all season but especially in the playoffs, led the Pirates with 17 points making 8-of-14 shots and grabbing 20 rebounds. He ws selected to the all-state tournament first team. Gordanier, who came off the bench most of the year but started in the state tourney because of the injuries, added nine points. Coleman, who sat out the Culver game but came back to play some against the Savages, scored six points. Scott Daniels scored five points. Sam Griffin two and Joe Daltoso, who like Gorda nier was forced, to start because of the two injuries, came through with two points and nine rebounds. Riverside as a team made 17-of-43 shots for 39 percent and made 7 -of -18 from the foul line. Despite the pressure of being in the state tournament, the Pirates committed only seven turnovers. Enterprise shot 31 percent, 15-of-48, from the field and made 6-of-10 from the foul line. The Savages made 11 turnovers. Riverside outrebounded En terprise 37-36. Mike Holliday led Enter prise with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The highly touted guard duo of Jeff Quinn and Rick Howerton were held to eight points each. Besides Wilson on the state first team, others on it were Howerton, Quinn, Randy Zis tel of Culver and Mark Schachtsick of Regis. Pirate Sam Griffin was selected to the state second team along with Enterprise's Mike Holliday. But the championship tro phy was not all Riverside walked away with. The school also won trophies for having the best rally squad, pep band and halftime entertainment at the state tournament in Pen dleton. Riverside finished the sea son at 23-3. Culver finished third in the state tournament and Warren ton fourth. Corbett won the girls state title beating Pilot Rock in the finale 51-44. Rivereide-40 Culver-35 In Riverside's second game at the state competition, the team beat Culver 40-35 to advance to the championship game against Enterprise. The "Masters of the Mid-Air Magic" from Riverside led most of the game and were led by the inside power game of center Lerry Wilson. Wilson scored a bucket, a free throw after being fouled on a drive, and another bucket to put Riverside in front 9-6 midway through the first quarter. Randy Zistel led the Bulldog comeback hitting four short jumpers for eight points as Culver took a 14-13 lead at the end of the quarter. Culver was taller than Riverside at every position but the Bulldogs tried to press and that proved ineffective against the quicker Pirate team. The game stayed close in the second period until River , side's Sam Griffin got hot from the outside and led Riverside to a 24-19 first half lead. Riverside stalled the last two minutes of the half in an effort to rest the starters since they had to play most of the game because of the injury problem. Wilson showed he can play defense too as he blocked two Culver shots in a row to keep Riverside in front in the second half. Two power inside plays by Wilson and a three point play at the end of the third quarter by Joe Daltoso, after receiving a smooth ' assist pass inside from Wilson, put Riverside on top 33-25 at the end of three periods. Culver switched from a zone to a man to man defense in the last period but it did not slow down the Pirates.
