Growing plants in water
without soil discussed

Hydroponics, which is the
science of growing plants in
water without soil by the use
of nutrients, was the discus
sion presented by Delta Huber
at the lone Garden Club on
Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the
home of Jean Nelson.
Mrs. Huber used the book,
"The Indoor Water Garden
ers' How-to Handbook" by
Peter Loewer as a reference.
She noted that it is simple to
grow many house plants in
this way by starting with a
sparkling clean glass or pot
tery container. To this would
be added a "hold-fast" mater
ial such as gravel, coarse sand
(not beach sand), broken
brick or clear marbles; char
coal; the plant; and water
containing some nutrients.
The water should be changed
at four-to six-week intervals
and plant food added only at
this time. Plant food should be
used at half to quarter the
recommended strength. Many
common house plants such as
arrowhead, blood leaf, Chi
nese evergreen, coleus, dra

baby girl, Annie Marie Hisler,
Feb. 15 at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital in Heppner.
She was born at 9:24 a.m.
, and weighed eights pounds,
nine and one-half ounces.
She has a brother, Shaun, at
their home in Heppner.
The grandparetns are Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Healy of
Heppner and Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Hisler of Heppner.

FAMILY CRUSADE
There will be a family crusade
at the Irrigon Assembly of
God, with Wrangler Rod, Feb.
,24 through Feb. 28, and
possibly Friday, Feb. 29, to be
announced later.
Wrangler Rod will have
puppets and does rope tricks.
He is scheduled to be at A.C.
Houghton School auditorium
on Tues. Feb. 26.
FAREWELL SERVICE
The Rev. and Mrs. Steve
Johnson will be conducting
their farewell service, Sun
day. Feb. 24. They have been
serving the Irrigon Baptist
Church on an interim basis
and now have been called to
serve the Baptist Church in
Sandpoint, Idaho.

be carried out in cooperation
with the Lions Club some

Christ. Jean Nelson and
Norma Rea thanked everyone
for helping with the Burning of
the Greens celebration on Jan.
7. They were pleased to have
so many of the school children
attend.

'Praise seminar'

Umatilla church
A "Praise Seminar" will be
held by the Umatilla Chapter
of Women's Aglow on Feb. 26
at the Assembly of God
Church in Hormiston.
Guest Speaker. Phyllis Hop
per, is vice president of
Outreach and Retreats for the
Northwest Oregon Aglow Area
Board.
The seminar will be held
from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Those
attending should take a sack
lunch. Baby sitting will be
provided during the seminar.
An evening meeting is
scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Cake
and coffee will be served for

Heppnerites son
promoted to rank
of lieutenant
Bobbie D. Harris, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Darrel P. Harris of
Route 1. Heppner, has been
promoted in the U.S. Air
Force to the rank of first
lieutenant.
Lieutenant Harris is an air
intelligence officer at Aviano
Air Base in Italy.
The lieutenant, a 1967 gradu
ate of Heppner High School,
received a bachelor's degree
in 1975 from the University of
Maryland European Division,
and was commissioned in 1977
after completing Officer
Training School at Lackland
Air Force base Base, Texas.
His wife, Betty, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
James H. Angell of Route 2,
Hermiston, Ore.
Food stamp
requirements
tightened
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture is tightening its
management of the food
stamp program. Assistant
Secretary of Agriculture Carol
Tucker Foreman said, start
ing in June, people applying
for food stamps must supply
social securtiy numbers for
adult household members and
all children with income.
"This provision, which is
required by a 1979 law, will
help states use computers to
check information provided
by people applying for food
stamps," Foreman said.
