eppner beats Stanf ield ,
lose to Sherman in O. T.
Heppner's boys basketball
team split in last weekend's
games edging Stanfield 64-60
and then being edged them
selves in overtime by Sher
man 57-52.
Heppner trailed by 13 points
at halftime, 41-28, before the
team made its comeback.
Doug Holland scored 14 of
his 15 points in the second half
to spark the win. Another
sophomore, Dorian Forrar,
scored 9 points making 7-of-8
shots from the foul line. Jim
Parker scored 15 points, John
Bier 9, Larry Palmer 4, Dale
Holland 3, Curt Day 7, and
Rick Cole scored 2 points.
Heppner outscored Stanfield
20-9 in the last quarter to take
the win. The Mustangs trailed
at the end of one quarter 17-11,
then at halftime 41-28 before
Heppner began to play de
fense in the third quarter and
came back to trail 51-44.
Heppner made 24-of-52 shots
for 46 percent while the Tigers
made 25-of-59 for 42 percent.
In one of the most exciting,
but also one of the most
disappointing games of the
year for Heppner fans, Sher
man's Huskies came back in
the fourth quarter to tie the
game after trailing the entie
game and then won it in
overtime by five points.
Heppner led 13-9 at the end
of the first period, leading the
way was Curt Day scoring on
an offensive rebound and a
side shot and Doug Holland
scoring on a 20-foot bomb and
on a lay in after a steal and an
assist pass from Parker.
Two more shots by Day, one
on a nifty hook shot, put
Heppner in front 19-14 but
Sherman scored to make it
close at 19-17. The halftime
score ended with the Mus
tangs in front 24-20. Day had 10
points to lead all scorers.
Dale Holland scored six
points in the third period to
keep Heppner in front. Sher
man tied the game at 28-28
midway through the period
but the Mustangs came back
to lead at the end of three
quarters on a tip-in shot at the
buzzer by Dale Holland 34-30.
Sherman scored off the
opening tip off in the fourth
quarter to pull within two
Bowling
Sparetimers League
Jackie Allstott bowled a 22
game for the high game of the
week in the Sparetimer's
Bowling League.
She also had the high
individual series with a 482.
Coast to Coast had the high
team game with 788 and the
high team series with 2,110.
Petersons is in first place
with a 16-4 record, Coast to
Coast is second at 14-6 and
Jerry's Mobil and the Morrow
County Grain Growers are
both . 11-9. Gardners, is Ml,
Sears 8-12. Central MarKet
6-14 and Bucknums 5-15.
Lucille Massey picked up
the 2-7-10 split and Jean Ball
the 4-10.
Coast to Coast is first in the
total pins standings with 10.708
and Petersons is second with
10.665. The MCGG team is
third with 10.168. Jerry's
Mobil fourth with 9.623, Cen
tral Market fifth with 9.417.
Bucknums sixth with 9,050,
Sears next at 8.856 and
Gardners last with 8,524 total

minutes left in the game.
The last minute of the game
was hectic as Heppner trailed
47-45 and Brian VonBorstel of
Sherman was at the foul line
shooting one-and-one free
throws. Coach Dale Holland
called two consecutive time
outs and the strategy paid off
as Heppner got the ball after
he missed the first free throw
and center Dale Holland made
a shot with seven seconds left
in the game to tie it at 47-47.
Sherman threw the ball
away so with three seconds
left -Heppner set up its last
play for the final shot. Bier's
28-footer was just long and the
game went into overtime.'
Sherman made six free
throws in the overtime to take
the game.
Heppner's leading scorer,
Jim Parker, had trouble
finding the hoop the entire
game as he scored only three
points. He did not make a
basket from the field until the
fourth quarter.
Dale Holland led the scoring
with 15 points, John Bier
scored 13 before fouling out in
the overtime period. Day
finished with 12 points, Doug
Holland 8, and Dorian Forrar
had 1 point.
The balanced Sherman scor
ing was led by Tim McNab
with 12 points.
Sherman upset Wahtonka
the night before 50-48 so the
Mustangs just played the
Huskies at a time when they
were on a hot streak. Sherman
had won only one league game
before last weekend.
Things don't look any
brighter for Heppner as the
. team travels to Pilot Rock to
play the unbeaten Rockets and
then plays second-place Wes-ton-McEwen
in a home game
Saturday. Game time for both
contests is 8 p.m.

Junior high
places third
in tourney
The lone Junior High bas
ketball team came in third
place in the Helix Basketball
Tournament Saturday beating
Helix 28-16 but losing to Echo
29-16.
Craig Hams scored 11 points
in the win with Steve Millman
scoring 6, Mark Meyers 4 and
Howard Leavitt 4.
In the loss to the unbeaten
Echo team, Millman scored 4,
Hams 4 and Meyers 3. Pat
Seifer, who is 6-foot-2, led the
winners with 11 points. Echo
led at halftime 20-6.
"Echo ran an effective
half-court trap press that
made the boys jittery but did
not cause that many turn
overs." Coach Bob Deeter
said.
Earlier in the week, Arling
ton beat lone 38-28. The
halftime score was 16-7. Hams
led the team with 9 points, Bob
Harris had 6. Meyers 4,
Millman 3, Randy McCabe 2,
Jeff Ball 2, Brian Douglas 1
and Darrin Padberg scored 1
point.
lone is 6-4 this season the
team travels to Condon today
and plays at Echo next
Thursday.
Dennis Stefani scored a
season high 28 points and
Robin La Rue scored 21 to lead
the lone Cardinals to a 68-49
win over Wheeler Saturday.
Against Helix Friday night,
Stefani scored 18 points as
lone won 60-48.
This weekend the Cardinals
travel to Echo Friday and
play Arlington at home Satur
day. Both games start at 8
p.m.
Arlington is fighting with
the Cardinals for second place
in the Big Sky Conference so
that home game promises to
be a struggle. The Honkers
edged lone earlier in the
season. Echo is in the middle
of the pack and has two high
scorers. Todd Rohde and Joe
Ramos. Arlington has a bal
anced scoring attack as five
players scored in double
figures last week in the
Honkers 76-73 loss to league
leading and unbeaten Dufur.
Against Wheeler, lone
jumped out to a 16-9 first
quarter lead and led at
halftime 31-23. The two teams
played even in the third
quarter as the Cards led 49-37
but they increased in the lead
in the fourth period to win by
19 points.
Stefani made 13-of-18 shots
from the field for 72 percent
but shot only 40 percent from
the foul line, 2-of-5, on his way
to his 28 points.
LaRue made 10-of-16 shots
for 63 percent from the field.
Keglers League
Linda Schultz bowled a 227
game and had a 521 series for
the high marks in the Koffee
Kup Keglers League last
week.
The Three L's and the
Weary Wives are tied for first
place in the standings with
11-5 records. The Newcomers
and the Dregs are tied for the
next position with 10-6 marks.
The Three Holers, the Hi Ho's
and the Pytts are all 6-10 and
the Gutter Dusters are in last
place with a 4-12 record.
The total pins standings are
close with the Three L's first
with 6,136, the Newcomers
second with 6,126, the Weary
Wives third with 6,092, the
Three Holers fourth with 6,082,
the Dregs fifth with 6,066, the
Gutter Dusters sixth with
6,053, the Hi Ho's seventh with
6,046 and the Pytts last with
5,883.
The Three L's and the
Gutter Dusters tied for the
high team game of the week
with 565 and the Three L's had
the high team series with
1,629.
LaRae Kindle made the 5-10
split and Marget Dubuque
picked up the 3-6-7-8 combination.
Thursday Ladies
Gateway Toyota is in first
place in the Thursday Night
Ladies Bowling League with a
15-5 record.
Cal's Tavern and the Black
horse Tavern are- tied for
second place with 12-8 records
and Ray Boyce Insurance and
Columbia Basin are tied for
the next spot with 10-10 marks.
The last two teams are Kroll's
Dept. Store at 9-11 and Kinzua
Corp. at 6-14.
Kinzua is first in total pins
with 57,034, Gateway Toyota is
second with 56,923, Blackhorse
rV's split
The lone JV's finished with
a win and a loss last weekend.
Both games were close with a
score of 45-41 with Helix
winning, and 54-53 with lone
beating Wheeler.
Against the Grizzlies, lone
kept fighting all the way but
lost by four. Donny Taylor had
16 points with Jeff Hams
adding 15, Patton 4, Gutierrez
2, Barnes 2, and Rea 2.
Saturday was a very excit
ig game. At halftime Wheeler,
was ahead 33-28.
At the beginning of the
second half, lone became fired
up. At the final buzzer the
score was 54-53. Donny Taylor
had 19 points. Also scoring
was Hams 12, Starr 10,
Gutierrez 8, Rea 2, Morter 2,
nd Patton 2.
Tavern is third with 56,766,
Columbia Basin fourth with
56,622, Ray Boyce Insurance
fifth with 55,715, Cal's Tavern
sixth with 55,062 and Kroll's
last with 53,896.
Billie Doherty bowled the
high game of the week with a
211 and Mille Hanna bowled
the high individual series with
a 484. Hanna made the 5-10
split.

start against Helix as the
team led at the end of the first
quarter 22-10. The Grizzlies
only scored six points in the
second quarter while lone had
15 to make the score at
halftime 157-16.
Helix began to pick up the
pace in the third quarter as
they scored 15 points while
lone only scored three and
what looked like a runaway
game was getting closer at
40-29.
A full-court press in the final
period created easy lay ins for
the Cards and enabled the
team to hang on for the 12
point win.
The Cardinal boys team is
now 7-2 in league play.
