February 14. 1980 ELEVEN Second-place Fillies face unbeaten Pilot Rock, Weston-McEwen at home The Heppner Fillies are in second place in the Columbia Basin League behind un beaten Pilot Rock after a 39-16 win over Stanfiefd and a 50-31 win over the Sherman Huskies last weekend. Heppner, 6-2, faces the league leading Pilot Rock Rockets tomorrow night in an away game beginning at 6 the Sherman game but the 16-of-26 shots from the foul line points. V A J if they did not have such a tremendous lead, as Sherman did a good job breaking the Heppner press and outscored the home team in the final period 8-1. Heppner led at the end of the first quarter 8-7 but led 29-15 at halftime and 49-23 in the third quarter before the Fillies went cold in the last period. The Fillies easily handled the low scoring team from Stanfield. Devin led the team with 12 points and Kincaid added 10 as the two guards led the way again. Heppner shot 35 per cent from the field in the 23 point win. I SPORTS lone girls win two Michelle LaRue scored 19 points to lead the lone Cardinal girls basketball team to a 25-22 win over Wheeler Saturday. lone led 7-0 before Wheeler came back to make it 9-7 and then lone took the halftime lead 12-11. "We won it after halftime," Coach Martha Doherty said. "It was an excellent , team effort and I was pleased with the way the girls handled . themselves on the floor." Doherty said LaRue not only was a star on offense hitting 8-of-14 shots but she also stopped Wheeler's high scor er. Martha McElligott scored 4 points and Diann Morter and Tammy Holtz scored 1 point each. Holtz had 10 rebounds, LaRue 9 and the 5-foot-l Morter had 7 boards. lone walked all over Cas cade Locks 47-8 in Wednes day's game. The Cards led 11-0 at the end of one quarter and 26-0 at halftime so the game was never in doubt. lone made 19-of66 shots from the floor for 29 percent while the visitors made only 3-of-38 shots for eight percent. Cascade Locks committed 65 turnovers while lone made 23. lone outrebounded its opponent 48-39. lone beat the team 27-23 earlier in the season. The' Cardinals had 25 steals in the game. "The bench played most of the second half so we did not try to run the score up on them but they just could not get the ball down the floor against the press we put on in the first half," Doherty said. LaRue scored 9 points and had 8 rebounds, McElligott had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Morter had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Holtz had 7 points and 13 rebounds, Liz McElli gott had 7 points, Anita Palmer 6, Margaret Doherty 4, Kim Pettyjohn 3 and Lisa Meyers 2. The only loss of the week was to Helix Friday 50-22. Holtz led the scoring with 5, McElligott had 4, LaRue 4, Doherty 3, Morter 2, Palmer 2 and Pettyjohn scored 2 points. EMTdance successful The Heppner EMT Dance was a success, according to John P. Nordheim, president of the local chapter of Emer gency Medical Technicians. About a third of the total needed to buy the new stretcer was raised by the dance held Jan. 26. The stretcher is necessary to work with the new ambulance. Much of the success of the dance is attributed to the' donation of time and mater ials by Duane and The Plainsmen (the band), Cen tral Market, Jerry's Mobil, Heppner Family Savings, and donated use of the American Legion Hall. "Without these donations and the advance ticket sales, the Heppner EMT's would have made quite a bit less money towards purchase of the stretcher," Nordheim said. "We really appreciate the donations the community made towards this purchase."
