Thursday, February 7, 1980 Tom Kingston engineer promoted to Carty general manager Tom Kingston has been promoted to general manager of Portland General Electric Co.'s Carty coal plant near Boardman. In his new position, Kingston will be responsible for overall operations and management of the 530-mega-watt generating plant. Project construction at Boardman is more than 85 percent com plete. The plant is scheduled to be in commercial operation in August of this year. Kingston joined PGE in 1973 as a mechanical construction engineer. He later served as assistant resident engineer at the Trojan Nuclear plant and was resident engineer at Boardman prior to assuming his new position. A 1965 graduate of Indiana Institute of Techonology with a degree in mechanical engi neering. Kingston worked on five coal plant projects for American Electric Power Co. prior to joining PGE. Kingston is a member of the Hermiston Kiwanis Club and the Oregon Boiler and Pres sure Vessel Inspectors Asso ciation. He and his wife Sara have three children and live in Hermiston. Western Heritage assets reported on the increase Assets of the Western Heri tage Savings & Loan Associa tion have increased 9.1 per cent to a new total of $110,797,595. it was announced at the association's recent annual business meeting. It was also reported that through the use of the secon dary mortage market, lending volume throughout northeast ern Oregon had reached nearly $40 million. John B. Tax credit available to families Certain Oregon families who have earned income - below $10,000 and have at least one child living with them may qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC). The EIC is a refundable tax credit. For 1979 the maximum credit is $500, according to Internal Revenue Service information. For the first time, recipients may receive their EIC in advance payments along with their paychecks, this will serve as an option to claiming the credit on an income tax return and receiving it in a lump-sum. There are other qualifica tions in addition to earning below $10,000 and having a child live with you. However, families who think they might qualify, based on these two basic requirements, may con tact their local IRS office. Irrigon news Francis Rose Wilson 922-3352 Forest grazing aids cattle weight gain Grazing in the forest can improve the weight gains of beef cattle, at least on the summer ranges of northeas tern Oregon's Blue Mountains, researchers at Oregon State University's Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center at Union have learned. "It appears that if you could manipulate it, cattle would do best in a lot of summer grazing areas in the Rluo mountains if they started out on grassland range in earlv summer, then were moved to forests when the open grass lands started drying up." said MarMn Vavra. superintendent of OSf's Union research station near La Grande. Vavra said he bases his cuiicliision on cooperative tests run in the summers of I!t7(i 177 and 197H on a 1 1 -sfiuarc-milc tract of the U.S.' Forest Service's Starkev Fvporimontal F?,mie and For est in the Blue Mountains about 35 miles west of La Grande. By Frances Rose Wilson Approximately 150 friends attended Don Kenney's birth day party Saturday night. They gathered at the Lions Clubhouse to honor him on his 75th birthday. Kenny has been active in community affairs for many years. His children gave the party and his wife, Freda, said she didn't lift a finger to help because the children "took care of everything." His children include Jim of Port land, Bob and George of Irrigon and Fay Hermans of Waitsburg, Wash. Fay has won honors in worldwide quarter-horse competition and presently teaches a class of 60 in horsemanship. The Good News Singers will be at the Irrigon Assembly of God church Sunday to partici pate in the 11 a.m. service. The high school and junior high classes of the Sunday School had an outing at Hat Rock Park last Sunday after noon. They had planned to go to Cutsforth Park for a "Fun in the Snow" outing only to discover there was not enough snow. On Wednesday night a former pastor, Wesley Cronk, was present and gave a program of his favorite gospel songs. He was returning to Alaska after visiting family and friends in Oregon, Wash ington, and California. Ivan Dike has returned to his home after spending a month at St. Anthony's Hospi tal in Pendleton. He and his wife are managers of the Irrigon Motel and Apart ments. Tammy Rock is home from Hawaii, where she spent a month with a geology glass from Whitworth College in Spokane. The city employees have been busy thawing out pipe lines and frozen meters. One large water meter that re quired help was to the Columbia View Fellowship Church.
