The City of Heppner reports that the water supply failed to meet Federal bacterio lonical standards durinq December 1979. Analysis of monthly drinkinq water samples indicated that the December sample was positive for coliform orqanismsand that this result exceeded the limit allowed by law. The coliform oraanism is used as an indicator of micrnnioloqical quality, and while these ornanisms pose no threat to health, their presence does indicate that a source of contamination miqht exist somewhere in the water system. An investiqation by the City was initiated as soon as the positive sample was reported. Chlorina tion was immediately instituted and subsequent samples of the drinkinq water were neqative to coliform. Earl Papineau, Supt.
