Mustang varsity plays
Umatilla after losing two
The Heppner Mustang boys
varsity basketball team lost
two games last weekend and
will try to get back on the
winning track when they
entertain Umatilla tomorrow
night and play at Wahtonka
Saturday.
Umatilla is 0-3 this year and
lost to Stanfield last weekend
71-64.
Heppner beat the Wahtonka
Eagles earlier this season but
Coach Dale Holland of Hepp
ner said, "They are playing
much better now."
Wahtonka is 2-0 in league
play and in second place
behind Riverside in the West
Division of the Columbia
Basin League.
After 10 games, the Mus
tangs are 5-5. Jim Parker
leads the team in scoring with
a 13.9 average and Curt Day is
second in scoring at an 8.5
clip. Dale Holland averages
7.5, Doug Holland 6.7 and John
Bier 5.4. Dale Holland leads
the rebounders with 91 with
Parker grabbing 69 and Day
67.
In last week's game, Bier
broke out of his scoring slump
and scored 8 in the 47-42 loss to
Pilot Rock and 10 in the 56-43
loss to Weston-McEwen.
"Bier had a good weekend
both offensively and defen
sively in the two games,"
Coach Holland said.
Against Weston-McEwen,
Heppner trailed 14-12 at the
end of the first quarter but ran
into trouble in the second
period as they only scored four
points to trail at halftime
28-16.
"We just did not generate
enough offense," Holland
said. "We just could not hit the
bucket."
The TigerScots outscored
the visitors 23-17 in the third
period to put the game out of
reach and Heppner scored
more in the fourth period 10-9.
Heppner outrebounded the
taller home team 36-29 with
Dale Holland getting 11, Bier 9
and Day 8. Weston-McEwen
shot 46 percent from the field,
26-of-56, while the Mustangs
made only 15-of-48. Heppner
made 13-of-20 from the free
throw line while their oppo
nents made 4-of-7.
Along with Bier's 10 points,
Heppner's scoring had Parker
with 12, Dale Holland with 10,
Day with 9 and Doug Holland
with 2 points.
Heppner made only ll-of-38
from the field while Pilot Rock
made 16-of-44 in the loss to the
Rockets. The visitors also
outrebounded Heppner 34-27.
The Mustangs started off
slowly as they trailed at the
end of the first quarter 14-8.
Doug Holland kept Heppner in
the game with two 20-foot
bombs and he scored on a
fastbreak with an assist from
Parker.
The Rockets led 20-12 in the
second quarter but with some
4-for-4 free throw shooting and
Parker canning a 20-foot shot
for his first two points of the
game just before the halftime
buzzer, Heppner pulled within
four at 24-20.
Pilot Rock scored three
baskets to open the second
half to lead 30-20 when Dorian
Forrar came off the bench to
spark Heppner.
The sophomore played ag
gressively at the offensive end
of the court as he made 6-of-9
foul shots at the end of the
third and the beginning of the
fourth quarters. He cut the
lead to 32-31 with one of his
free throws at the start of the
last quarter but that was as
close as Heppner could come.
The Mustangs had trouble
with the Rocket press in the
last quarter as Pilot Rock
opened its lead to nine points
at 44-35.
Heppner fought back but a
two shot flagrant foul, techni
cal foul on Dale Holland, the
player, put Pilot Rock ahead
with a minute left in the game
46-38.
Doug Holland led the team
in scoring with 12 points, Bier
had 8. Forrar and Parker 6,
Day 5, Dale Holland 3 and
Tony Currin scored 2.
Heppner made of 20-of-28
foul shots while Pilot Rock
made 15-of-20.

Cardinal girls team
loses to Echo, Arlington
The lone Cardinals girls
basketball team lost to Echo
39-11 and Arlington 47-17 in
last weekend's action.
Echo led 11-3 at the end of
the first quarter and 21-3 at
halftime. The visitors led 28-9
at the end of three quarters.
Martha McElligott scored 4
points, Michelle LaRue 3, Lisa
Meyers 2 and Tammy Holtz
scored 2.

Thursday League
Gateway Toyota is on top in
the Thursday Night Ladies
League, along with Cal's Cafe,
as both teamsa have 6-2
records.
Kinzua Corp. was the win
ner of the first half of the
season with 40 wins and 28
losses and 49,317 total pins.
The Blackhorse Tavern and
the Columbia Basin teams are
tied for second with 5-3
records.
Ray Boyce Insurance and
Krolls' Dept Store have 4-4
records and Heppner Bowl
and Kinzua Corp. are 1-7.

"Holtz got in early foul
trouble and she sat out half the
game," Coach Martha Do
herty said. "She was our only
height against three big girls
on Echo's team. We played
good 'D' against their height.
There was no way we could
stop Echo's inside game."

into committing 36 turnovers
but they could not convert the
errors into points as they lost
47-17.
Lack of height again proved
to be a disadvantage for lone
as Teresa and Debbie Bailey
scored 16 and 14 points for
Arlington. Both those girls are
6-foot-l.
LaRue scored 6 to lead the
scoring with Holtz adding 5,
McElligott 4, and Diann Mor
ter scored 2.

Heppner junior varsity
upsets Hermiston
The Heppner JV team had
its best game of the season,
according to Coach Brent
Eggars. Monday night as it
beat the visiting Hermiston
sophomore team 56-38.
When the two teams played
last month. Hermiston came
out on top winning by two
points in overtime.
"We used a full-court press
in the first half and led 28-14
JV team edges Rockets
and just cruised the rest of the
way," Eggars said. "We
played super defense and got
the fastbreak going for the
first time since early in the
season.
The balanced scoring was
led by Ken Siookey with 11
points. Don Lott with 10, Greg
Sweeney with 10, Kelly
Crewse with 7and Robert Bier
had 7. Stookey had 10 re
bounds, Bier 9 and Earl
Hammond 8.
Alice Abrams scored a
season-high 13 points, grabbed
8 rebounds and had five steals
to lead the Heppner Fillies to a
45-32 win over Weston-McEwen
Saturday.
Heppner trailed at the end of
the first quarter 12-11 but took
the lead at halftime 23-21. The
Heppner defense came on
strong in the second half
holding the home team to just
11 points while scoring 22.
"We played the same 2-1-2
zone defense but we were just
more aggressive," Coach
Sheri Brock said.
Lynn Dee Devin scored 8
points. Sandra Ward 7. Geri
Grieb 6, Deann Conner 6,
leading scorer Mary Kincaid
was held to 3 points and Kellie
Hammon scored 2.
Devin. Grieb and Kincaid all
had four steals. Grieb had four
assists and Kincaid three.
Heppner lost to Pilot Rock
at home 52-43 Friday night.
Heppner fell behind 10-2 at
the end of the first quarter as
neither team could score for
the first four minutes.
The Fillies fought back in
the second quarter as Mary
Kincaid scored 10 points in
that quarter and had two
assists for fastbreak buckets.
Heppner led at halftime 22-19.
The second half was crucial
for the Fillies as the ome team
went five minutes without
scoring after Kincaid hit an

Rodoo Association met Jan. 16
and elected Bob Montgomery
as its president.
Don Stroeber will be the vice
president.
Sherree Mahoney will re
main as secretary-treasurer.

The Pytts won the first half
of the Koffee Kup Keglers
League but the Newcomers
are on top at the beginning of
the second half of the season
with a 4-0 record.
The Weary Wives, the
Dregs, and the Three L's all
are 3-1 and tied for second.
The Three Holers, the Hi Hos
and the Pytts are 1-3 and the
Gutter Dusters are 0-4.
Lucille Massey bowled the
high game wit a 175 and Iris
Campbell had the high series
with 470. The Dregs had the
high team game with 562 and
the Newcomers had the high
series with 1,598.
Linda Schultz and Rita Britt
made the 3-10 split, Roxie
Lovgren made the 5-6-10,
Maude Hughes the 5-7 and
Betty Aldrich made the 5-7-10
combination.
The Newcomers are first in
total pins, the Weary Wives
second, with 1,555, and the
Dregs third with 1,537. The
Three L's team is fourth with
1.505 and the Gutter Dusters
fifth with 1.496. The Three
Holers' team is sixth with
1.463. and the Hi Ho's seventh
with 1,463 and the Pytts last
with 1.428.

Petersons is dtop the Spare
timer's Bowling League with a
7-1 record two weeks into the
Second half of the season.
Coast -to-Coast and the Mor
row County Grain Growers
are tied for second with
Jerry's Mobil as all three
teams are 5-3.
Sears is 4-4. Gardners 3-5.
Bucknums 2-6 and Central
Market 1-7.
Petersons had the high team
game of the week with 754 and
the high team series with
2.192.
Frank Cook bowled the high
game of the week with a 177
and had the high individual
series with 499.
Coast-to-Coast is first in
total pins with 4.296 with
Petersons second at 4.272. The
M.C.G.G. team is third wth
4.115 and Jerry's Mobil fourth
with 3.883.
Gardners is fifth with 2.853
and Central Market sixth with
3.636. Bucknums is seventh
with 3,633 and Sears last with
3.541. '
The Heppner boys JV team
beat Pilot Rock 30-29 but lost
to Weston-McEwen 53-38 last
weekend.
"Defense carried us to a
great win over Pilot Rock,"
Coach Brent Eggars said.
"We got off to a horrible start
but the kids hung in there and
showed a lot of character and
mental toughness. It was
probably our top defensive
effort of the year."
Pilot Rock led at the end of
the first period 10-6 but
Heppner held them to two
points in the second quarter to
make it 14-12 at halftime. The
Rockets had the lead at the
end of three quarters 21-20.
Brett Sherer connected on a
17-footer in the last minute of
the game that ended up to be
the winning shot. Ken Stookey
led the scoring with 17 points.
Robert Bier had seven re
bounds, Stookey six and Greg
Sweeney six.
Heppner made 12-of-17 from
the foul line, its best this
season.
Against Weston-McEwen,
the Mustangs fell behind 14-6
at the end of one quarter and
30-15 at halftime. The team
fought back in the third period
as they outscored the home
team 17-9 but still trailed 39-32.
The team could not continue
its comeback as Heppner was
outscored 14-6 in the last
quarter.
"We were outhustled and
forgot how to screen out on the
boards in the first half but we
came back and totally out
played them in the third
quarter," Eggars said. "We
reviewed an offense at half
time that we had run just once
in practice and ran it to
perfection in the second half.
"Weston-McEwen is a good
team. They are undefeated
against Class A JV teams and
have beaten a couple of Class
AA teams but I think we will
give them a run for their
money at our place. Indivi
dually. I thought Brett Sherer
and Greg Sweeney played well
for us."
Stookey scored 12 points.
Sherer 10 and Sweeney 9.
Stookey led the rebounding
with seven.
