Sheriffs9 association seeking new members
among Oregon's public for better awareness

Larry Fetsch announced re
cently that the Oregon State
Sheriffs' Association will con
duct a membership campaign
across the state in the near
future.
The broad purpose of this is
to increase the awareness of
citizens in Oregon in the work,
needs and problems of the
sheriff and his deputies.
The program is also expec
ted to generate funds for the
association which will be used
to provide scholarships for a
limited number of young
people throughout the state. It
also will be used to provide for
administrative services for
the associations and for assis
tance to widows and children
of police officers killed in the
line of duty.
The campaign will take the
form of a letter from Sheriff
Fetsch inviting citizens in
Morrow County to become
honorary members of the
state assoication. Citizens who
join the association will re
ceive membership credentials
consisting of a membership
card, accident-life insurance
policy, and two bumper stickers.
In addition, all members
will receive periodic informa
tion from the association in a
magazine which will stress
crime prevention programs in
burglary, rape, armed rob
bery, etc.
Sheriff Fetsch urges every
one to support this member
ship effort by joining the
Oregon Sheriffs'.
State Sen. Jhn Powell.
D-Halsey. has filed for the
Democratic nomination for
Secretary of State.
Powell, a 32-year-old vet
eran legislator, chaired the
Senate Revenue Committee
during the 1979 legislative
session. His committee han
dled the $705 million tax relief
program and was responsible
for adding the state govern
ment spending limitation.
In a prepared statement .
Powell said. "Only through a
standardized accounting pro
cedure can the public and
their representatives know
how last government is grow
ing and spending.
"Each agency keeps rec
ords in a manner that best fits
their needs, instead of in a
manner that fits the public's
need to know about their
government."
Rosalie Huss to oppose
Packwood election
Rosalie Huss. Portland Re
publican activist, has filed as
a candidate for U.S. senator.
She is the only primary
election opponent to incum
bent Bob Packwood now.
"I feel that a most critical
issue is the defense of our
country, and that the people
want someone who would vote
the way they, themselves
would vote." Mrs. Huss said.

position "in favor of killing
babies" (the abortion issue).

"Packwood will be spending
huge amounts in this cam
paign to overcome his record
and to convince Oregonians
that he really represents
them," Mrs. Huss said.
"Packwood claims that he
doesn't rely mainly on special
interest groups, yet most of
his campaign money comes
from out of state, and most of
that from special interests."
Packwood has spent his
time in organizing his "Poto
mac connections" instead of
working for the people of
Oregon, she said.
"I'm not a professional
politician," Mrs. Huss said,
"but we need someone other
, than a politician, and I intend
to provide Oregonians with a
clear choice. As a woman, a
mother, and a grandmother. I
believe it's time to speak
against Packwood's voting
record that jeopardizes our
country and our families."
Mrs. Huss. 58, and Oregon
resident all of her life, has
lived since 1963 at 23rd Avenue
and Belmont Streets in Port
land. A graduate of Albany
High School, she attended
Northwest Bible Institute in
Seattle and was graduated
from LIFE College in Los
Angeles, a four-year Christian
College. Five of her seven
children are living, and she
has four grandchildren.
She has worked with the
Committee for Good Govern
ment since 1960. She said that
statewide organization "pro
duced the only real effort
during the 1964 Goldwater
Miller presidential campagin
when the state organization
not only failed to participate
but hampered efforts." This
committee was also responsi
ble for recruiting several
thousand new people into the
precincts in 1978.
Active in many other cam
paigns, she was a delegate to
the national convention in 1976
when she supported the presi
dential candidacy of Califor
nia Gov. Ronald Reagan.
Mrs. Huss served two terms
as vice-chairman of the Mult
nomah County Republican
Central Committee and has
been on the State Central
Committee for four terms
(eight years) and is currently
on the State Executive Com
mittee. She is serving, follow
ing election by precinct com
mittee persons, a four-year
term as chairman of the Third
Congressional District for the
Republican Party. That office
provides her with the respons
ibility of conducting the dis
trict convention which will
name the delegates to the
Republican National Conven
tion. She is the wife of Walter,
Huss, immediate past state
chairman of the Republican
Part of Oregon.
