The Spout Springs Kosort is noted for its extensive training that prepares beginners for the area's more challenging slopes. The Pixie Mountain Ski Bow l is another fairly close ski resort that is about a two-hour drive away. It is located five miles northeast of Prairie City near John Pay on Highway 2(i. one rope two. The drives can be longer in bad weather so a weekend outing for these areas is sometimes the best plan. A favorite resort for many south Morrow County skiers is the Anthony Lakes Resort near North Powder between LaGrande and Baker on High way 30. It opened Nov. 23 and the phone there is 963-6913. North Morrow County skiers may find the trip west toward Portland the host way to go. About throe hours away are five large ski resorts near ML Hood. Mt . Hood Meadows is one of the closest. It is located just off Intorstate-80. turning at Hood River onto Highway 35. It is 38 miles south of Hood Ri ver. The resort has more than 50 runs with the longest being about two miles. The Cooper Spur Ski Area is a lit tie closer. 24 miles south of Hood River on the same highway as Ml. Hood Mea dows. Hood and carries skiers to 8.500 feet for summer skiing. During the winter, the Palmer Lift is buried under snow from November to March so there are throe other lifts at lower elevations to use. There are 21 runs at the Timberline Lodge with the longest being from two to six miles depending on the snow conditions. Lift lickels are $1 1 for all day and night skiing on the weekends and $10 in the middleof the week The Timberline Lodge is a national historical site ipen seven-days a week year-round There is entertain ment every night during the winter skiing season. Three good Oregon Ski Resorts to plan for a mini vacation are the ones at Mt. Hachelnr. Hoodoo Bowl and the lliuh Wallowas They are about lour hours away which can make lor a long trip if crammed into one day. The High Wnllowas Ski Area is open for the first time this season It has the Pacific Northwest's only gondola lift. The gondola was finished in I97(t' and has boon used by ML'htseors during the summer months who come to Wallowa Lake the gondola lift ticket cesis $12 for an unlimited number of rides during any da no gondola ride costs $5. The four-passenger gondola cars carry skiers to the summit of Ml Howard. The run is three-and-one-half miles long. The phone number is 432-5331. The resort is located near Joseph, which is eight miles south of Enter prise, on Highway 82. It is scheduled to open Pec. 15. It has a sleep summit to base run for advanced and export skiers while the beginner's area, unlike most ski areas, is at the top of the mountain. Ml Bachelor and Hoodoo Bowl are in central Oregon near Bend Mt. Bachelor is 22 miles from Bend. It has 30 runs, the longest being one mile. There are seven ski lifts, two for beginners, and one rope tow. The top lift price is $11 and there is no night skiing. Mt. Bachelor has entertainment on the weekends and day care facilities are available. The runs vary from wide open areas to challenging paths running through the forests. The phono there is 382-2442 Hoodoo Bowl is 43 miles west of Bond near Sisters. It has 16 runs, the longest being one mile. There are two chairlifts and two rope tows.
