Frederic Glenn Roy, 540 S.
Main St. in Heppner, was
found with the unlawful pos
session of a weapon. He had a
.45 caliber Colt pistol that was
not registered. No charges

A 1976 trailer and truck
combination vehicle tipped
over while it was going around
a corner near Highway 730
and Interstate 80. The truck
and trailer were filled with
cattle. The vehicle is owned by
Livestock Transportation Inc.

Bellamy named
to commission
State Representative Billy
Bellamy (R-Culver) has been
appointed to serve on the
Education Commission of the
States. The commission is
made up of public officials
from 46 of the states and is
.designed to study possible
solutions to the problems
which face schools, including
the question of school finance.
"Rep. Bellamy was a na
tural selection to serve on this
important commission," said
House Minority Leader-elect
Paul Hanneman. "We took a
poll of the Republican caucus
and Billy was the overwhelm
ing favorite to serve because
of his background and concern
when it comes to educational
issues."
ReD. Bellamy, a former
high school teacher, served on
the House Committee on
Education during the 1979
regular session of the Oregon
Legislature and was recently
appointed to serve on the
House Interim Committee on
Education. Bellamy was also
a recognized leader in the
area of increased funding for
vocational education.
"We know that with Rep.
Bellamy on this Commission,
Oregon will have aggressive
representation and a strong
voice in the recommendations
which will come out," said
Hanneman.

4715 N.E. 14th in Portland,
died at his home Nov. 22 at the
age of 82.
Hp was born in lone Feb. 27.
1897 the son of Mr. and Mrs
Eric Bergstrom. He was
married in 1925 and he spent
many years of his life farming
in the whratlands of eastern
Oregon. He lived the last 54
years in Portland.
Blue Mt.
board OK's
new lift
The Blue Mountain Com
munity College board has
authorized a sum of not more
than $5,441 to install a lift for
handicapped access to the
Business Department in the
college's Morrow Hall.
In a variety of other matters
at the Nov. 21 meeting College
President Ron Daniels was
authorized by the board to
prepare bid specifications for
an additional lane of traffic
coming up the college hill,
east of the existing two lanes.
The new lane would come up
as far as the Morrow Hall
parking area. Daniels will also
gather bids on the construc
tion of a sidewalk on the south
side of Carden from Highway
37 to the college entry way.
The construction projects will
depend on state highway
construction plans and the
weather.
Keith Kruchek Consulting
Firm was hired to develop a
complete energy audit of the
college campus. The audit will
be used by the firm to help
BMCC apply for an energy
conservation project grant.
According to a report pre
sented by Ellsworth Mayer,
' dean of academic planning
and research, the architec
tural firm of AJS-Lynch is
currently studying remodel
ing plans with appropriate
college committees. Construc
tion for handicapped accessi
bility would begin in April and
the general construction on
remodeling in June. Comple
tion date for all projects would
be targeted at Sept. 28.
Finally the board voted to
request a permanent ease
ment from the State Highway
Department for a road from
the track area to Highway 30.
In another matter, Blaine
Hanks, radio broadcasting
insturctor, reported to the
board that he had located a
used transmitter in good
condition at a cost of $1,500. In
recent months, the college's
radio station has been re
quired to either increase
wattage or relinquish their
frequency. The board author
ized the purchase of the
transmitter.

Bergstrom was a veteran of
World War I in the U.S. Army.
He was also a member of the
Vernon United Presbyterian
Church, a life member of the
B.P.O.E. No. 358 in Heppner
and a member of the Ameri
can Legion.
Survivors include his wife.
Olga M., and three sons Don,
Wayne and Bill, all of Port
land. Also a brother, William
E. Bergstrom of lone, 10
granddaughters, four grand
sons, one great-granddaughter
and one great-grandson
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
Nov. 26 at the Killingsworth
Little Chapel of the Chimes,
with entombment at the Rose
City Cemetery Mausoleum.

the Vernon Presbyterian
Church in Portland.
The lone High School Band
began . working strenuously
Monday on the five marching
songs they will be making a
tape of Dec. 21 and sending to
the acceptance committee in
Great America. Calif.
Gene Sartain's group is
hoping to be chosen as one of
the marching bands that will
come to the city's festival
extraordinaire April 9.
The five tunes the band will
be playing are "The Hustle,"
"Evil Ways," "Rubberband
Man," "You Should Be Danc
ing" and "Paros Los Rum
beros." The band is having extra
rehearsals on weekends for
the 26 marchers who are going
to be able to go.
Sartain said marching band
music is required on the tape
since the festival consists of
groups of marching bands. A
picture of the group must also
be sent in and a good
appearance is important, he
said.
The band director added
that the group will begin
practicing its marching tech
niques to sharpen up that area
of their program. Because of
the cold weather, they will
practice in the gym.
"The band will march
through the park and play a
song until they reach the
concert site where they will
play a few more songs and
then march out playing their
final number," Sartain said.
In other band news, Chris
Rietmann has been selected to
play the baritone sax in the
Pendleton Community Wind
Ensemble.
The group consists of older
adults but Rietmann, only a
sophomore, played the music
well enough to be asked to be
one of the performers.
Sartain was invited to play
with the group and he took
Rietmann along because he is
so "advanced" in his ability
and the director of the
ensemble invited him to
become a members.
Rietmann is also a member
of the Cardinal Company
school rock band that is in the
process of buying a $400 PA
system for the high school.
Rietmann plays the bass
guitar, Mike Conklin plays the
drums, Sartain plays the
guitar and Linda Poole plays
the organ. They all do some
singing.
Sartain said the rock band is
polishing its songs, adding
some material and gaining
some experience by perform
ing for high school functions in
an attempt to get ready to play
professionally on a regular
basis sometime in March.
He said the Heppner Elks
Club has already invited the
band to play.
With the money the rock
band raises at its engage
ments, they will begin to pay
off the PA system. The system
consists of two column ampli
fiers and one head amp. The
band is purchasing the system
from F&H Music in Pendleton
and they are "letting us pay it
off on a long time basis
whenever we can," Sartain
said.

type of keyboard instrument
before so a used one has been
purchased for $140.
The money was taken out of
the band parents' fund, which
consists of money taken in
from a variety of band
fund-raising activities that
have taken place this year. It
is a Fartisa Combo Compact
organ and Sartain said a new
one would cost about $1,000.
Although Europe is about
the same size as Canada, its
population is greater than
North and South American
combined, the National Geo
graphic Society notes.
