State champs
lone humiliates Prospect 72-6
Ione's Cardinals humiliated
the Prospect Cougars 72 6 in
the state championship game
for eight man teams last
Saturday. It is the second year
in a row that lone has won the
state title with their 23rd
straight victory.
After fighting the weather
elements, the Cascade Range
through Crater and Diamond
Lakes and the snow to within
eight miles of Prospect, the
Cardinals settled in to rout the
Cougars in record fashion for
the most points scored in a
state championship game, and
easily establishing the biggest
point spread in a champion
ship game.
Shortly after the Star Spang
led Banner was played, Gregg
Rietmann set the stage that
was to follow for the remain
der of the day when, on the
third play from scrimmage,
he scrambled 71 yards for his
first of five touchdowns.
Prospect would have been
better off at that point to have
gone back to the dressing
room and concede the cham
pionship because only scarred
bodies, bruised egoes and
flared tempers were to remain
until the victory was sealed a
few hours later.
As has been the case all
season for Coach Gordon
Meyer's team . the victory was
not the artistry of one person,
even though Rietmann's 194
yards and five touchdowns
were impressive. The entire
team shared in the glory.
Rietmann scored the second
touchdown of the game on a
10-yard pass from quarter
back Dennis Stefani but the
extra point pass again failed
and lone led at the end of the
first quarter 12-0.
Tim Patton set up that score
with a blocked kick and
recovery at the five-yard line.
Shawn LaRue scored the
first of his three touchdowns
on a four-yard run and the
score mounted to 18-0 when
the extra point again proved
unsuccessful.
Rietmann showed he could
play defense too as he blocked
a punt and recovered it in the
end zone. The extra point pass
play from Stefani to Rietmann
worked this time and the score
was 26-0.
Rietmann scored again in
the explosive second period,
this time on a two-yard run,
and Stefani's pass to LaRue
made the score 34-0 at
halftime.
Tim Patton set up that score
with a blocked kick and
recovery at the five-yard line.
Prospect had no offensive
punch in the first half as lone
had control of the ball twice as
long on offense. Stefani passed
the ball six times, completing
four, for 81 yards just in the
first half. Rietmann rushed
for 84 yards on just five
carries.
The offense picked up where
it left off in the second half
when Stefani returned a punt
to the Cougar 30-yard line
after the defense had held
Prospect's offense. LaRue
scored six plays later on a
one-yard run and the extra
point pass from Stefani to Jim
McCabe put lone up 42-0 and
the 10-1 team from Prospect
was obviously embarrassed
by its play as they began to
show some poor sportsman
ship by trying to fight with the
lone players.
But lone decided to leave
the fisticuffs to Prospect and
continue to whip the tar out of
the Cougars on the football
field. Rietmann scored his last
touchdown of the game, still in
the third period, on a 47-yard
run. LaRue caught a pass
from Stefani to make the score
50-0.
lone mounted the lead to
56-0 on a 37-yard touchdown
pass from Stefani to Les
Thompson but the extra point
attempt failed.
Prospect got its only score
of the game on a four-yard run
by Greg Stillwagon. Prospect
star Doug Valentine led that
drive with a couple of long
runs and an 18-yard pass
reception.
The teams entered the final
quarter with lone leading 56-6
but that did not last long as
LaRue scored on an 11 -yard
run and then ran in the
two-point conversion and lone
led 64-6. Center Glen Krebs
received an ankle sprain on
the play.
With the substitutes in, lone
still controlled the game. Jeff
Hams scored the final TD of
the game on a five-yard run
and he also ran in the extra
point to make the overwhelm
ing final score 72-6.
The members of the lone
Cardinal State Championship
team include seniors Dennis
Stefani. Robin LaRue, Terry
Starr. Glen Krebs, Jerry
Rietmann and Mike Conklin.
Juniors on the team are Tim
Key, Scott Balfe, Shawn
LaRue. Gregg Rietmann,
Treve Peterson, Les Thomp
son, Jim McCabe, Duane
Fetsch, Mark Patton, Richard
Ladd and Harney Rea.
The only sophomore is Jeff
Hams. Freshmen are Vince
McKlligott. Denny Starr, Jeff
Key, Donnie Taylor, Craig
Gutierrez. Matt Barnes and
Tim Patton.
The head coach is Gordon
Meyers assisted by Del LaRue.
Stefani finished the game
with 158 yards passing hitting
on 8 of 13. Rietmann caught
three passes for 62 yards.
Thompson three for 74 and
LaRue two for 22 yards.
LaRue also ran for 71 yards on
15 carries.
Total yardage was 469 for
lone and 123 for Prospect.
Sophomore leads Heppnei
in football statistics
Sophomore sensation John
Murray led the Heppner
football team in five statistical
departments at the end of the
11-game season and he was
near the top in two others.
Murray carried the ball 180
times for 1,119 yards rushing
from his tailback spot for
an average of 6.2 yards a

Koffee Kup League
The Pytts are still in first
place in the Koffee Kup Kegler
League with a 3W-W rec
ord. In second place is the Three
L's is at 26-18 and the Hi Hos'
team is third at 25-19. The
Weary Wives team is tied with
the Gutter Dusters for fourth
place with 23-21 records.
In sixth place is the team
called the Three Holers, who
are 17-27, The Newcomers are
next at ' 14'2-29'l. with the
Dregs last at 14-30.
The Pytts are also first in
total pins with 17.406. the
Three L's are next at 17,285
and the Weary Wives are third
at 17.140. The Hi Hos are
fourth at 16.831 and the Gutter
Dusters are only two pins
behind that team with 16.829.
The Three Holers are 16.721.
the Newcomers 16.677 and the
Dregs 16.596 total pins.
The high game of the week
was rolled by Hilda Yocom
with a 175. Iris Campbell had
the high series with an even
500. The Three Ls bowled the
high team game with 52 pins
knocked down and the Pytts
had the high team series with
1.565.
Splits were made by Marie
Boor, the 3-7-10. and Maude
Hughes, the 6-7-10.
Thursday League
The Kinzua Corp. and Ray
Boyce Insurance teams are
tied for first place in the
Thursday Night Bowling
League with 29-15 records.
But Kinzua is ahead in total
pins with 28,958 compared to
28,039.
Columbia Basin is in third
place at 27-14 but is second in
total pins with 28,349. The
Blackhorse Tavern is fourth
with as 23-21 record but is
sixth in total pins with 27,964.
Kroll's Department Store is
fifth with a 20-24 record and is
third in total pins with 28,332.
Gateway Toyota is fourth in
total pins with 28,201 and sixth
in the league standings with a
29-25 mark.
Heppner Bowl is seventh in
the league at 15-29 and Cal's
Cafe is last at 12-32. Heppner
Bowl has 27,304 total pins and
Cal's Cafe has 27.356.
Joyce Winter bowled the
high game of the week with a
182. Sandi Hanna had the high
series with a 494. Kinzua had
the high team game with a 925
and Columbia Basin had the
high team series at 2,653.
Sparetimer's League
Jackie Allstott bowled a 202
game for the high game of the
week in the Sparetimer's
League last week.
Phyllis Cole and Fran Cook
tied for the high individual
series of the week with 506.
The Morrow County Grain
Growers team lengthened its
league lead to four games with
a 35' n-121 2 record.
Coast-to-Coast is second
with a 31 '.-16' 2 record and
Peterson's Jewelry is 28-20.
Bucknum's Tavern is 23'

Murray also led the team in
scoring as he amassed 25
touchdowns rushing, one re
ceiving and one on a defensive
interception for a total of 162
points. He had four intercep
tions in the 11 games to lead
the team in that department.
He was also the leading
kick-off returner with a 24.7
average and he returned punts
17 times for 192 yards for a 11.3
average. Murray was ninth in
the team in defensive points
and second in receiving with
nine grabs for 58 yards and a
6.4 average per catch.
Jim Parker, a senior, led the
defensive unit with 186 defen
sive points, (40 assisted and 58
unassisted tackles). Joedy
Marlatt was second with 167
points (29 assisted and 58
unassisted tackles). Dale Hol
land was third with 157 points
(seven tackles for a loss) and
sophomore Earl Hammond
was fourth with 139 points (42
assisted and 38 unassisted
tackles.)
Fifth in defensive points was
Doug Holland with 111 and
Steve Marlatt was sixth with
