FOURTEEN The Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, October 4, 1979 t Amtrak eyes Boardman depot as future stop for Pioneer The old Union Pacific Rail road depot at Boardman, now boarded up, could become a station stop for Amtrak pas senger trains if the commu nity desires it and there is sufficient patronage. Beverly Kyd of Boardman, member of the Port of Morrow Commission, raised the ques tion last week at a meeting in Hermiston with Arthur Lloyd of San Francisco, western region public affairs officer of the National Railroad Passen ger Corporation (AMTRAK). Lloyd was guest speaker at a meeting of the Transporta tion Subcommittee of the East Central Oregon Association of Counties. Rod Aho of Heppner is chairman of the committee. The railroad official said the passenger train, the Pioneer, that serves eastern Oregon will continue to operate for at least two years. This is because the people made politicians aware of their need for the train and by riding it, he said. The Pioneer operates from Seattle to Salt Lake City by way of Portland and Boise. Patronage has risen 41 per cent in the past year. There is a routine station stop at Hinkle, site of the big Union Pacific yards near Hermiston. "Why not a routine stop at Boardman?" Mrs. Kyd asked. Turner board adds member The Lilian C. Turner Board of Directors met at the home of Jack Van Winkle Thurs day morning for the purpose of welcoming a new director, Jo Irvin of Irrigon, and to elect officers. Ervin Rauch named as chairman and Jack Van Winkle vice-chairman. Three loans were granted at this meeting to applicants attending schools. The direc tors expressed satisfaction that the moneys are being borrowed, as this is to help deserving students further their education and is loaned at their discretion at a low rate of interest. Letters will soon be sent to members asking to renew their dues and anyone is allowed to donate. The dues are $3 a member. Those on the board are Ervin Rauch, Jack Van Winkle, Jo Irvin of Irrigon, Clayton Davis of Pendleton and an appointed sec. Delpha Jones. CORRECTION In the Gazette-Times article of Sept. 20, concerning the 50th anniversary of the Lexington Grange, the names of several local people were inadver tently omitted. Charter members still living in the area but no longer Grange members are Mable Gray, Cleo Van Winkle, Lena Kelly and Alta Cutsforth, all of Heppner and Emma Peck of Pendleton. Advisors to meet The Heppner-Lexington Ad visory Committee will meet at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Heppner High School Library. Items on the agenda are: (1) orientation of new members. (2) reports on board activities, staffing and a survey to change the graduation date. Parents invited Parents of high school students are invited to attend a visitation program by repre sentatives from the Oregon state colleges and universities at lone Junior -Senior High School on Monday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m., and at Heppner High School the same day at 10:30 a.m. DMV office closed The Department of Motor Vehicles office in Heppner will be closed today and tomorrow. Next week, the DMV depart met will travel to Fossil and Condon Oct. 10 and 11 for testing. "The old depot at Boardman has (restroom) facilities and is quite clean," she commen ted. This was in reference to the Amtrak shelter at Hinkle that lacks restrooms for waiting passengers. Lloyd said Boardman could be considered for an Amtrak stop if there were a request submitted and a guaranteed avaerage of at least six passengers per day boarding the trains. In addition, such a stop should not add time to the Pioneer's schedule. "We change crews at Hin kle, so Hinkle would continue to be a stop," he said. Aho commented later that the East Central Oregon Association of Counties might consider requesting Amtrak to make Boardman a station stop for the trains. After Lloyd's arrival at Hinkle last Wednesday and before his speech in Hermis ton, he was taken to Board man for an inspection of the old depot, Aho said. Lloyd commented that Hin kle was not origianlly planned as a passenger stop when Amtrak originated the Pio neer. "Amtrak officials in the East did not realize there were towns nearby," he said. Unmanned shelters were spotted at a number of stops along the Pioneer route for the benefit of passengers. "Under union rules," he added, "we have to pay ticket clerks $18,000 a year." In other comments, he said Amtrak is cooperating with the Willamette Valley Rail Study Committee that is con sidering additional train ser vice between Portland and Eugene. Such trains would be financed by 20 percent state participation and an 80 per cent federal subsidy. If the service is established, ' the Pioneer schedule might be coordinated with arrivals and departures at Portland, so connections for Eugene would be convenient. u inijumiiiiiiii jii, i...
