Murray rushed for 122 yards on 18 carries for an average of almost seven yards a carry. He scored four touchdowns on runs of 28, six and seven yards and added a 73-yard kickoff return for another score. John Bier had his best game of the year in passing as he hit on six of seven passes for 109 yards. The Mustang's well balanced attack was added to by fullback Doug Holland as he carried the ball 10 times for Gregg Rietmann (34) bursts through the line on one of his long runs. Vernon game Gregg Rietmann scored on the third play of the game on a 73-yard screen pass to begin a spectacular offensive night for the 170-pound all-purpose runningback as he scored five touchdowns and ran for 276 yards leading the lone Cardi nals to a smashing 46-22 win over Mt. Vernon. The Bears seemed ready for the game as they stopped lone cold on the first two plays of the game but the Cards took advantage of the aggressive play of Mt. Vernon on the third play of the game. When four Bear linemen coverged on lone quarterback Dennis Ste fani, he calmly lofted the ball over their heads into Riet mann's arms and he raced untouched 73 yards to paydirt and was excorted by his offensive line. ft. Coast to Coast still leads Sparetimers The Coast-to-Coast bowling team still is on top but Petersons and M.C.G.G. have closed the gap in the race for the championship of the Sparetimer's Bowling League. Coast-to-Coast has won IVA games and lost 4M while Petersons and M.C.G.G. are now only one-half game back with 11-5 records. Jerry's Mobil is 9-7 and Bucknums has a record of 7IV8Vi. Central Market and Gardners both have 6-10 marks and Sears is still in last place with a 2-14 record. Coast-to-Coast still is ahead in total pins with 8,544 followed by Petersons, 8,347; M.C.G.G., 7,946; Central Mar ket, 7,499; Bucknums, 7,153; Jerry's Mobil, 6,560; Sears, 6,541; and Gardners, 6,145. Fran Cook rolled the high game of the week with a 190. Phyllis Cole had the high series with a 482. Petersons had the high team game at 919 and M.C.G.G. had the highn team series with a 2,637. Irene Samples made a 4-10 split while Betty Mills and Ellen Campbell both made the 5- 10 combination. Doris Graves made the 5-7 split and Marie Turner picked up the 1-3-7. Kitty Coon made the 6- 7-10 split. Stefani ran in the conversion and lone led 8-0. Rietmann scored again in the first quarter on a 25-yard run but the conversion pass from Stefani to Treve Peter son was dropped by the receiver. lone fumbled twice in the second quarter, once without anyone even touching the ball carrier, but they were not hurt by their mistakes as the only score of the second period came on a 71-yard run by Rietmannand lone led at the half 20-0. Mt. Vernon had one good drive in the first half as they went all the way to the six-yard line but they fumbled. lone upped the lead to 26-0 in the second half when the Bears fumbled the opening kickoff. Who else but Riet mann scored only plays later on a 41-yard run. The conver sion again failed. It looked as is Mt. Vernon could not do anything right as they fumbled again on the first play after the kickoff and lone recovered. But lone could not take advantage of the turnover. In fact, they used it to their disadvantage as Mt. Vernon's Stan Hutchison made a nifty interception of a Stefani pass and ran it all the way for a 61-yard touchdown. The two point conversion was good and the score was Ione-26 and Mt. Vernon-8. Shawn LaRue scored on a one-yard run to put lone ahead 32-8 but Hutchison came right back for Mt. Vernon with a 77-yard kickoff return to make the score 32-14 in favor of lone. Rietmann continued his of fensive show as he scored on a 37-yard run on a fourth down play in the last quarter and Stefani passed to Les Thomp son for the two-point conver sion as lone led 41-14. lone was not through for the night offensively though as Stefani hooked up with Thompson on a 53-yard pass play and lone led 46-14. Mt. Vernon scored the final points of the game on a two-yard sweep by Mitch Ferguson, Joey Wood, a 145-pound freshman quarter back, ran in the two-point conversion to make the final score 46-22. The Cardinals had 503 yards in total offense with 366 on the ground and 137 in the air. Ione's next game will be tomorrow night in lone in a 7:30 game when they take on Arlington. Arlington beat Mitchell last week 44-18. Baseball little league meeting planned Oct. 9 There will be a baseball little league organizational meeting Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the First National Bank of Oregon Meeting Room. It is an open meeting for anyone who wants to attend. Elections of officers for the coming year will take place. After the game, Coach Gordon Meyers of lone praised his offensive unit which compiled more than 500 yards in the game. Meyers was especially im pressed with the running of Gregg Rietmann but he was quick to point out the blocking Treve Peterson, Terry Starr, Glen Krebs, Jerry Rietmann and Les Thompson opened the gaping holes in the Bear's offensive line. "Mt. Vernon came hard," Meyers said. "They probably gang tackled better than anyone we have played thus far. But you can't take anything away from a bunch of kids that runs and passes for over 500 yards and ran their record to 4-0. This kind of team is exciting to coach, exciting to watch and I really feel good about them." Terry Starr was back on defense for the first time this year after suffering an arm injury in an off-season acci dent. But Robin LaRue, an end, was injured in the Mt. Vernon game, Del LaRue, Robin's father and the assistant coach on the lone football team, said his son would probably be out of action for awhile but he hoped he would be ready for post-season play. It was later learned LaRue had torn liga ments and would be out for the year. He was operated on Tuesday and will be in a cast for six weeks. After four games, Gregg Rietmann is leading the de fense in tackles with 36, six unassisted and 30 assisted. Jim McCabe is the leading unassisted tackier with eight and has 19 assisted tackles for a total fo 27. Shawn LaRue also has 27 tackles, Craig Gutierrez has 26, and Barney Rea and Mark Patton have 21 total tackles each., Rietmann is also leading the offensive statistics with 651 yards rushing in the four games for an average of almost 163 yards a game. He averages 9.4 yards per carry. Shawn LaRue is the second leading rusher with 215 yards for an average of 5.1 yards a carry. The team as a whole has gained 1,059 yards rushing on 110 carries for an average of 9.6 yards per attempt. Quarterback Dennis Stefani has hit on 24 passes in 46 attempts for 407 yards and six touchdowns. His passing per centage is 56 percent and he has thrown just one interception. Riverside trounces Wasco 33-0 Friday Riverside continued its win ning ways with an impressive 33-0 shutout over Wasco County Friday. Gary Gordinier was the star on offense as he gained 105 yards on 15 carries. His teammate runningback Lerry Wilson gained 69 yards on 16 carries. Gordinier scored from two yards out and Wilson scored from a yard out. Quarterback Steve Dalton also scored from a yard out and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Coleman. Dalton also kicked three extra points. Heppner scored everytime it had the ball in the first half in running up a 27-3 halftime score. The final Heppner score of the night came on a 40-yard pass play from Bier to Holland. The Heppner defense was tough as usual as they held Sherman to minus 16 yards rushing. Sherman did gain 153 yards through the air but their only touchdown of the game came on a 74-yard kickoff return. Jim Parker was a standout on the deiensive squad out lie did have problems kicking the extra points as he hit on only three of six attempts. Heppner will be at home tomorrow against Umatilla. The Mustangs will be 4-0 going into the game while Umatilla is 1-2. Umatilla won its first game of the year last week as they squeaked by Wahtonka 14-12. Umatilla was behind 12-0 before they made a comeback. Jmatilla is led by Viking tailback Dan Crandell, who had a 67-yard run last week to turn the game around. Cran dell also set up the winning touchdown when he broke loose for a 47-yard scamper. Fullback Bary Gary Jones scored the winning points on a five-yard plunge. Jones also proved himself to be an accurate punter as he pinned Wahtonka deep in its own territory with his punts. Jones also made two of two extra point kicks. PREDICTION: Heppner has everythink going its way now and unless a mass of injuries occurs, the team should have no problem win ning this game, or any of its remaining games, and they have an excellent shot at winning the Columbic Basin Conference title. The only tough game left on the schedule for Heppner is against Pilot Rock Nov. 2 in a home game. The score of tomorrow night's game will be 32-6 in favor of Heppner. Booster Club slates spaghetti feed Oct. 5 by Shirley Harris Ione's booster club is spon soring a spaghetti dinner Oct. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lone High School cafeteria. The football game matching Arlington against lone will follow at 7:30 p.m. The price for the dinner of spaghetti, garlic or plain bread, and salad is $2.75 for adults and $1.75 for children 12-and-under. Money received from the dinner will be used for the large "Coming Events" sign that will be installed on Main street soon. The money will also be used to finance other club projects which benefit the lone varsity athletics. "Everyone is invited," said Jim Swanson, booster club president. The JV team from lone was also defeated in straight sets but by much closer scores 15-13 and 15-11. "I am impressed with the JV's and with how well they are playing," Coach Barbara Stefani said.
