Bowman wins three
honors in golf
tournament
Ron Bowman won the medal
ftlay tournament to decide the
follow Creek club champion
ship this past weekend. Bow
man won the coveted award
with an 18-hole score of 65.
John Edmundson was second
with a 69.
In the 2nd flight, Wayland
Hyatt won with a 69 and Elmer
Palmer took second with a 72.
In the third flight, Rick
Johnston was the trophy
winner with a score of 72 and
Dorian Forrar placed second
with a 74 score.
The first place winners in
each flight won a trophy that
will be presented to them at
the annual meeting.
Bob Jepsen was in charge of
the tournament.
Ron Bowman was a triple
winner as he also had the
longest drive of the tourney
and came closest to the pin.
Wayland Hyatt won the least
putts contest.
The last barbeque of the
season at the golf course will
be Sept. 30. Barbeques are
family affairs with both golfer
and non-golfer family mem
bers enjoying the activities.
All prospective golf mem
bers are welcome at this
barbeque. Participants bring
their own meat and those with
last names ending in A
through I bring salad and J
through Z bring dessert.
A fun golf round is played at
4 p.m. and dinner is between
5:30 and 6 p.m.
The golf club is a private
club and all residents of south
Morrow County must join to
play. Memberships are avail
able on a monthly basis for
new members for the remain
der of the year at $5 a month.

Greg Rietmann rushed for
158 yards on 25 carries and
scored two touchdowns lead
ing Ione's Cardinals to a 22-0
shut-out over Powder Valley.

in the first half of the game at
Powder Valley. Rietmann
scored on an eight-yard run in
the first period and on a
24-yard run in the second
stanza.
Quarterback Dennis Stefani
also scored a TD rushing. He
scored six points on an
eight-yard romp. Stefani also
ran for two two-point extra
points. The third attempt at a
two-point conversion failed.
The Cardinal defense held
PV to 137 yards rushing and 26
yards passing. lone totaled 287
yards on the ground.

week of bowling.
The Newcomers are 7-1
while the Weary Wives and the
Gutter Dusters are tied lor
second at 5-3.
The Three L's and the Three
Holers come next with 4-4
marks and the Pytts are in
fourth place with a 3-5 record.
The Hi-Ho's and the Dregs are
at 2-6.
Iris Campbell had the high
series with 481 pins bowled
down in three games. The high
team game was the Weary
Wives at 624.
The high team series was
rolled by the first place
Newcomers at 1638.
Betty Snow bowled a 218
game with a broken thumb.
Lions golf tourney
planned for Saturday
The local Lions' Club is
sponsoring a golf tournament
which is open to all golfers
Sept. 22 at the Willow Creek
Golf Course.
According to Lions' presid
dent John Edmundson, pro
ceeds from the benefit tourna
ment will go to the Lions" Sight
Foundation.
There will be an $8 entry fee
and prizes will be awarded
and a lunch of salads, hot dogs
and baked beans has been
scheduled to be served.
The tournament will begin
at 8 a.m. Saturday with coffee
and rolls being served. There
will then be a qualifying round
played of nine holes to
determine groupings. After
the qualifying round, all the
golfers will play 18 holes.
The women's volleyball
team from Condon will travel
to Heppner today to meet the
Mustang's squad in a 5 p.m.
match in the high school gym.
"Condon should be one of
the best teams in our league,"
said Heppner coach Sheri
Brock. "I don't know about the
other teams because they
have lost a lot of their main
players.
Coach Brock is in her third
year as volleyball coach at
Heppner High and she said 40
players are turning out this
year which is her largest
turn-out ever. Brock's teams
have finished second and then
third in her previous seasons.
The Mustangs are 1-0 in
league play so far this year.
They beat Wasco County last
week 14-16. 15-5 and 15-6. High
point server for the game was
Geri Grieb with 14.
The junior varsity team also
beat Wasco 15-13 and 15-10.
The C team lost l.i-4. 5-15 and
6-15.
In another away match, this
one a non -league contest.
Heppner lost to Hermiston 15-5
and 15-10. Kellie Hammond
was high point server in
th it makli-up.
The JV team also lost 16-14.
7-15 and 5 15. The C team won
the first game easily 15-9 but
lost the last two games 15-6
and 15-3.
Heppners volleyball team
has its first home match
tonight There are only four
players returning from last
year's varsity squad. The
team had another match
Tuesday against Wahtonka in
The Dalles but it was too late
for press time.

Garden Club flower show Sunday in lone
Flowers, plants, fruits and
vegetables of all sizes, shapes
and kinds will be on display at
the Flower Show and Silver
Tea this Sunday from 2 p.m. to
5 fm. in the lone School
Cafetorium.
The show is being sponsored
by the lone and Heppner
Garden Clubs and no admis
sion price will be charged. The
lone Club is celebrating its
30th anniversary.
All amateur gardeners are
invited to exhibit their flow
ers. Junior gardener competi
tion will also be available for
those 12-year-old and under.
Gardeners may enter the
competition from 8:30 a.m. to
11 a.m. Sunday morning. The
judging will take place behind
closed doors from 11:30 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The show will then be
open to the public from 2 p.m.
to 5 p.m.
Only one entry may be made
in class or sub-class but all
contestants may enter as
many classes as they would
like to.
Division I on the program is
for horticulture entries. As

mums, dahlias, geraniums,
gladiolus, marigolds, nastur
tiums, pansies, petunias, ro
ses, rudbeckia, snap dragons.
Mental health
director named
Dr. Terrel Templeman has
recently been hired as pro
gram director for Morrow
County Mental Health Ser
vices, replacing Dr. Janice
Green, who has accepted a
position with Douglas County
Mental Health Services.
Dr. Templeman received
his B.A. from the University of
Oregon and his M.A. and
Ph.D. in clinical psychology
from the University of Mon
tana. Dr. Templeman comes to
Morrow County with exper
ience and training in a variety
of clinical areas, including
family and marital therapy,
cognitive and behavioral ther
apy, neuropsychology, correc
tional psychology, and hypno
sis. As program director Dr.
Templeman says he is interes
ted in maintaining the good
relationships that Morrow
County Mental Health Ser
vices already has with the
school system, hospital,
courts and other agencies.
He said also he is interested
in making mental health ser
vices in this county more
accessible to people who do
not necessarily have mental
disorders but who may wish to
improve their effectiveness
coping with stressful events in
their lives, such as physical
illness, aging, personal losses,
family disagreements, and job
strain. He believes in this way
mental health services could

Division II is for junior
gardener competition. The
age groups for judging will be
from four to seven-year-olds
and eight to 12-year-olds.
Division III is for artistic
design in the arrangment of
flowers.

will educate onlookers on the
"uses of herbs." Helen Martin
has a program called "know
your seeds?" Jean Nelson will
present a garden library and
Judy Osmin will have a
program on "hydroponics."
Division V will be gardening
exhibits or displays by local
community organizations and

Jason Van Winkle, grandson
of Gladys Van Winkle re
turned to his home in Enum
claw, Wash, after visiting here
for a couple of weeks. On
Thursday, he and his grand
mother accompanied Mr. and
Mrs. C.C.Jones to John Day to
the Grant County Fair and
Jason met his great grand
mother, Sally Lawry at her
home in Mt. Vernon.

the judges. Blue, red and
yellow ribbons will be given lo

place winners in each class of
competition. White ribbons,
for honorable mention, will be
given in some cases, if
merited.
Rosette ribbons will be
given to the winners of the
best artistic design and the
best horticulture specimen.
An arrangement container
will be awarded to the
exhibitor with the most blue
ribbons in the design division.
Spring bulbs will be awarded
to the exhibitor with the most
blue ribbons in the horticul
ture division.
The sweepstakes revolving
award, a pewter compote, will
be awarded to the exhibitor
having the most blue ribbons
in the entire show .
In the junior division
petition, rosettes will be
awarded to the best design
and best horticulture speci
men. The sweepstakes win
ner, the youngster with the
most blue ribbons, will receive
a plant.
