Cardinals
Gregg Rietmann (34) gained yardage against Condon
Friday night as the Cardinals produced a 38-22 lesson to the
former U-man football visitors. The Cardinals are 8-man
football state champions and vying again for the title this
year. Friday afternoon, they take on North Powder in an
away game.
Heppner's Mustangs rolled
up 283 yards rushing on the
way to its first victory of the
season against the Stanfield
Tigers Sept. 7. Heppner shut
out the Tigers 20-0.
John Murray scored the
first touchdown in less than a
minute with a 40-yard run
following a fumble recovery
by Dale Holland after the
opening kick-off. Chris Zita
scored the next touchdown on
a 15-yard run following a long
drive in the second quarter.
Murray added the last six
points on a two-yard plunge in
the final stanza.
Although Heppner's passing
attack amassed only 27 yards,
quarterback John Bier did
connect on 5 of 14 passes. The
Mustangs had a total yardage
of 310 yards while Stanfield
had only 112.

forced to punt only once
during the contest when Jim
Parker booted the ball 41
yards. Murray led the rushing
attack with 127 yards on 21
carries for an average of six
yards per carry. Doug Holland
carried the ball for 72 yards
and according to Coach John
Sporseen "played a really
good, all-around game.''
Heppner is ranked first in
the Columbia Basin Confer
ence. The game tomorrow
night at 8 p.m. in Boardman
against Riverside promises to
be on the bigger challenges of
the season. Riverside defeated
Union 26-6 in a non-league
game last weekend.
Heppner's defense forced
Stanfield quarterback Monte
Ellis to take to the air. He was
able to complete 7 of 21 passes
for 100 yards while the Tigers
could only push forward 12
yards on the ground.

lone, defending state 8-man
champions, defeated Condon
Friday night 38-22 under a new
scoreboard donated by the
Kinzua Corporation in the
Cardinals' first non-league
game.
Cardinal Coach Gordon
Meyers cited the blocking of
his offensive line composed of
Treve Peterson, Terry Starr,
Glen Krebs, Jerry Rietmann,
Mike Conklin and Robin
La Rue.
"Defensively, the kids were
great, shutting Condon down
to practically nothing. And
especially for an opening
game, we played rather well,
with few penalties and offsides
and showed a lot of poise as
the veteran team that they
are," the Coach said.
Condon, new to 8-man foot
ball from 11-man Class A,
was held to a plus 6 yards total
yardage in the first half.
Scoring the first touchdown
of the game and season was
Gregg Rietmann on a 27-yard
sprint. The extra point failed.
Continuing the scoring in the
second period, Shawn LaRue
stepped in from 3 yards out.
Treve Peterson ran the point
after touchdown for another 2
pts.
Jim McCabe snared an
errant Blue Devil pass and
scampered 15 yards into the
end zone. Running in the extra
point was Cardinal Q.B. Den
nis Stefani. Closing out the
first half scoring for the
Cardinals was Peterson on a
12-yard reception from Ste
fani. The half ended on a failed
conversion attempt.
Opening the third quarter,
Cardinals Leslie Thompson
and Jeff Key dropped the Blue
Devil punter in his end zone
for a two point safety.
Final scoring for lone was
on a pass completion from
Stefani to Robin LaRue for 13
yards. Rietmann added final
points of the night with a
3-yard P. AT.

Monday Morning
Quarterback
By Jim Hackett
All three Morrow County high school teams, the Heppner
Mustangs, lone Cardinals, and Riverside won their Friday
openers this week and all demonstrated they will be tough to
defeat in the coming weeks.
It was already expected by most fans that the Mustangs
would be able to knock off Stanfield which chalked up a
winless season last year and looks headed in the same
direction in 1979. Look for a closely fought contest this year in
the intercounty football game Friday between Heppner and
Riverside. Still, with the Mustangs showing strong defense
and serving as defending league champions, I'll give them
the edge by 14 points.
lone Cardinals will return as state champions if they show
the type of defensive hitting and offensive might shown
Friday night against Condon. Condon, an 11-man football
team until this year, did not play clumsily scoring three
touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come back from a 0-38
deficit by the end of the third quarter. The Cards were
outstanding in their defensive pressure, stopping most of the
opponents' running plays and showing a mixed offense of
passing and running. lone Quarterback Dennis Stefani
looked like the Seattle Seahawk's Jim Zorn, firing passes to
receivers and dodging tacklers. The team's play looked like
end of the season rather than the season's opener and it is to
the credit of the lone coaching staff that they were prepared.
I will predict the Cardinals over Powder Valley by 20
points.
The Oregon Ducks' 33-19 victory over the Colorado
Buffaloes may indicate a tight race for the Rose Bowl with
the Washington Huskies and USC. The Oregon Journal called
it the biggest opening win since 1970 and I will have to agree.
The Oregon State Beavers were not so fortunate losing
16-35 to New Mexico.
In other Pac 10 contests, the Huskies whipped Wyoming,
38-2, Arizona walloped the Washington State Cougars, 22-7,
the USC Trojans defeated Texas Tech, 21-7 and the California
Bears slid past the University of Arizona. Houston upset
UCLA, 16-24.
From these results, there will possibly be another close
race for the Pac-10 championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl .
I would think that the Ducks will have a strong chance of
making it in the top 10 but anything can happen and since I
am a UW graduate, naturally favor the Huskies and their
star running back, Joe Steele.
Since this is my last sports column for the
Gazette-Times, I would like to say that I've enjoyed covering
the local sports scene for the short period that I've been here.
I enjoyed refereeing this year's county horseshoe contest. If I
had stayed, my next move would have been to support
introduction of wresting into area high schools but I will
leave that challenge to its proponents.
against Ione's reserves, when
Morris Weatherford ran over 5
yards out. Mike Cooney con
verted the extra point for two
points.
Robin Miller scored from
the 3-yard line to score the
Devil's second touchdown.
The extra point attempt was
unsuccessful.
Closing out the Blue Devil's
scoring attack was Monty
Mcintosh on a 23-yard pass
from Eric Harrison. Cooney
made the extra point for two.
The Cardinals travel to Pow
der Valley next Friday to take
on the North Powder Badgers
who had an easy victory over
Echo.
Coach Meyers said that
North Powder could possible
be the toughest game of the
season for the Cardinals after
North Powder's victory over
Echo Friday night. The team
will also be playing on its
home turf between LaGrande
and Baker on Friday after
noon. The Badgers play all
their games at home in the
afternoon while the Cardinals
play mostly at night.
