Emergency
repairs at
BMCC told
The Blue Mountain Com
munity College board of
education took emergency
action at its Aug. 15 board
meeting to authorize the
immediate repair of two areas
on the college campus so
construction would be com
pleted before the start of
school.
A concrete wall will be
constructed to halt the erosion
of the bank between Health
Education Building and the
MAC-Music Building. The
board accepted Gale Marshall
Company's bid of $9,530 for the
project.
In the south parking area in
front of Pioneer Hall, inade
quate drainage was causing
erosion under the asphalt.
Pioneer Construction Com
pany was hired to make the
needed repairs at a cost of
$5,600. An additional $800
might be needed if the existing
outfall line has to be replaced.
President Ron Daniels also
discussed with the board a
proposed reciprocity agree
ment currently being consi
dered by the State Board of
Education. The agreement
would allow Washington and
Oregon students to attend
schools in either state without
paying out-of-state tuition.
The board was concerned
with the effect the agreement
would have on Milton-Freewa-ter
students who could attend
college in Walla Walla 10
miles away rather than travel
the 30 miles to Pendleton.
Daniels noted that there are
currently about 20 full time
students attending BMCC
from Milton-Freewater.

Concerns of the board will
be relayed to the State Board.
Daniels noted that residents of
the Blue Mountain Commu
nity College district support
the college through property
taxes and tuition fees. Wash
ington colleges are supported
through the state income tax
and tuition fees.
