Hang Tough Pardner
Two entrants in Sunday's Open Class Rodeo at Heppner had
to hang on with arm power in the bull-riding and bronc-riding
events. There were no reported injuries in the bull riding and
a young rodeo clown managed to distract the animals after
their rides were over. It appeared one entry in the bronc
event lost the head of his horse but the animal was probably
trying to bite him on the right side. Such excitement
continued up to the closing moments of the 1979 Morrow
County Rodeo.

and Rodeo Court, Queen
Debora Palmer, and her two
princesses, Lori Edwards and
Jennifer Wenholz displayed
their riding abilities as well as
royalty from St. Paul, Pendle
ton, Boardman and Umatilla.
In the queens and courts
division, the St. Paul Rodeo
Court placed first, Pendleton
Roundup Court (of which
Janice Healy is a member),
second, Boardman Harvest
Festival Court, third and the
Umatilla Fair Court, fourth.
Antique car buffs provided a
plethora of cars to see in the
parade and one of the vehicles
driven by Bob Harrison had to
be hand-cranked in the middle
of the intersection before it
could proceed. First among
antique car clubs was the Blue
Mountain "A's" of Model A
Club of America; first among
old cars, 1939 and older or
trucks was Gar Poter's 1917
Gary of Condon, second,
Harold Peck's 1907 Interna
tional, third, Robert and
Diane Stickney's 1923 Model
"T", Pete Schwarzin's 1926
Model "T" and in the cars 1939
and newer, Cal Sherman of
Heppner won first place with
his 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline
with Bob Peterson driving a
1946 Ford taking second.
In the children's diyision,
Holly Eckman, 3'2 of Hepp
ner, was named as the
youngest cowgirl; the young
est cowboy title went to Tyson
Palmateer, age 7 months and
the best girls' costumes were
worn by Christi Stroeber of
Heppner and Amy Greenup of
Heppner respectively; the
best boys' outfits were worn
by Travis Greenup of Heppner
and Ryan Shiller of Butter- .
creek.
Ted Schwarz was first in the
tricycle division followed by
Jarred Minger in second
place.
Jim Wishart, parade chair
man for the past five years,
organized the event again this
year and thanked his judges
for the effort shown in
deciding on the winners. Jim
Farley, who also participated
in the parade, helped line up
entries at the starting point at
Green Feed and Seed since
Cornett Green was busy as
parade marshall.

Morrow County's unemploy
ment rate climbed to 6.9 per
cent for the month of July
from 4.9 in June, but Roland
Stewart, labor economist for
the State of Oregon Employ
ment Division, Pendleton,
says the upturn in unemploy
ment is about normal for this
time of year.
The increased unemploy
ment is due to the layoff of 170
workers at food processing
plants in the Boardman area
a seasonal variation.
Stewart feels the county's
economy will hold its own in
spite of the national recession
largely because of its strong
agricultural base, and con
struction of the new 1-82
freeway linking Washington's
1-90 with Interstate 1-80. Pro
posed dam construction in
Heppner should also alleviate
the unemployment problems
caused when the Carty Coal
Fired Plant at Boardman is
completed.
So far, the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers has not released
figures on the number of
workers to be employed at the
dam project.
