Kevin Rountree assumes manager post at
Les Schwab, new assistant manager hired
Kevin Rountree has been
named manager of the Les
Schwab Tire Center in Hepp-.
ner.
: Rountree, who has been the
assistant manager, succeeds
Robb Rush, manager for the
past two and a half years, who
has been transferred to the
new Les Schwab Tire Center
in the Santa Clara district of
Eugene. His family will be
going there shortly.
With the change at the local
store, Gino Guglielmelli has
been named assistant mana
ger. Rush and his wife Gayle are
both natives of Prineville.
Rush joined the Schwab orga
nization nine years ago. Be
fore they came to Heppner, he
had been assistant manager of
the Schwab store in Walla
Walla.
During their stay here, Mrs.
Rush was employed at the
Heppner Gazette-Times as an
advertising representative
and in type composition and
layout work.
Guglielmelli has worked for
three years in sales and
services at Les Schwab's Tire
Center in Milton-Freewater.

Gino will marry Sally Dyer of
Milton-Freewater September
8.
He is a member of the
Milton-Freewater Elks Club
and enjoys fishing when not
working in the tire business.

Koffier joins Bank of EO
George Koffier is the new
loan officer at the Heppner
Branch of the Bank of Eastern
Oregon.
Koffier, a mathematics and
physical education teacher at
Heppner High School from
1974-1978, has returned to
Heppner with his wife, Debbie
and two sons, Rick, 4, and
Brian, 1, after a year in
Portland as a branch manager
for Fred Meyers Savings and
Loan in Beaverton. After
serving as a savings branch
manager, Koffier worked in
the institution's contruction
appraisal department.
He sees his new job as an

opportunity to get into com
mercial banking. He also
wanted to return to Eastern
Oregon He is originally from
Echo and a graduate of Echo
High School and Oregon
College of Education at Mon
mouth, where he majored in
mathematics; he has 30 hours
of master's degree work in
math.
In his spare time, he enjoys
refereeing basketball games,
and likes to hunt elk and to
fish.
George is currently a mem
ber of Heppner Elks Lodge
358.
MC Creamery, Hager's Dairy
purchased by two Heppner men
The purchase of two long
time Morrow County busines
ses was announced this week
by Terry M. Hager and
Michael J. Sweeney, both of
Heppner.
Morrow County Creamery,
manufacturers of Pride of
Oregon ice cream, was pur
chased from Allen Burkenbine
of Heppner. Burkenbine has
operated the Creamery for the
past two years, having pur
chased it from W.L. "Bill"
Cox, whose family operated
the enterprise for more than
65 years.
Hager's Dairy, a wholesale
grocery and dairy products
outlet, was purchased from
James and Jewel Hager of
Heppner. Hager's Dairy, like
the Creamery, has a long
standing history in Morrow
County and Eastern Oregon as
a purveyor of grocery and
dairy products.
The two businesses will
maintain seperate business
indentities according to the
new owners. Morrow County
Creamery is incorporated un
der that name and Hager's
Dairy will become Blue Moun
tain Provisioners, Inc. The
operation will be headquar
tered at the Creamery build
ing at 148 East Center Street in
Heppner.
Blue Mt. Privisioners, Inc.,
is a distributor for a full line of
Ullman to face race
against newspaperman
Denny Smith of Salem, a
newspaper publisher who ex
pects to challenge Congress
man Al Ullman, D-Ore., in the
1980 deletions, was to visit
Heppner today.
Smith, 41, is chairman of the
board of Eagle Newspapers, a
group of Oregon weeklies.
A spokesperson for Smith,
who advised the Gazette
Times of his trip to Eastern
Oregon this week, said he

Terry Hager, who has been
employed as general manager
of the Heppner Gazette-Times
for the past two and-one-half
years, will assume responsibi
lities of general manager of
the two firms and will act in a
sales position as well. Swee
ney is a partner in the
Heppner law firm of Winter &
Sweeney.
No purchase price for the
respective businesses was
disclosed.

has new
owners
Gale and Jennie Gray are
the new owners of Beecher's
Restaurant and Lounge in
lone. They have purchased the
business from Beecher
Emert.
Gale was raised in Burns,
Oregon and Jennie in Albany.
Before entering the restaurant
business, Gale worked 17
years for SWF Plywood of
Albany and Jennie was an
employee of the Smokecraft
Beef Jerky plant in Albany.
The couple has five chil
dren, three boys and two girls,
and four grandchildren.
They are currently living in
Heppner with Jennie's mo
ther, Mrs. Dorothy Rugg.
Gale is a member of the
Eages and American Legion
and the couple enjoys camp
ing when not working at their
new restaurant.
The family style restaurant
is open 6 Hays a week from 10
a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday
through Saturday and from 8
a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and
closed on Monday. The lounge
is open from 10 a.m. to 2:30
a.m. Beecher's features live
music on Saturday nights.

Josie Peck has returned
home 'from a stay in The
Dalles General Hospital
where she underwent major
surgery. She was brought
home by her son and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Ron Peck.
John Bristow has retired as
a colonel in the U.S. Air Force
and is co-manager of Bris
tow's Market in lone with his
brother Don and working with
their father, E.W. Bristow.
John retired after 23 years

Secretary of the Air Force. He
is a 1955 graduate of Oregon
' State University with a degree
in business administration
and a minor in food techno
logy. In 1950, he entered the
service after serving in the Air
Force . R.O.T.C. program,
went through pilot training at
Bartow Air Force Base, Bar
tow, Florida and Reese Air
Force Base, Lubbock, Texas,
flew 77 combat missions as a
helicopter pilot for the Air
Force at Bien Hoa, 20 miles
north of Saigon and received
an air medal and the Bronze
Star for his combat activity.
Following his combat duty,
ho attended two years at the
Industrial College of the
Armed Forces and was then
assigned to the office of the
Secretary of the Air Force.
Upon retirement, he re
ceived the Legion of Merit.
Bristow is married to the
former Maire Linder of Her
miston, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Troy Linder. The
couple have a son, Doug and a
daughter, Linda. Doug will be
attending OSU and majoring

The board approved two
bids for a 30 and 66 passenger
school bus. A body bid of $6,886
was accepted from the W.J.
Roots compajiy for the 30
passenger bus and a 30
passenger chassis bid of
$10,800 from the Morrow
County Grain Growers. A
complete unit for a 65-66
passenger bus was accepted
from Schetky N.W. Sales for
$22,793. Delivery of the latter
is expected from 7-10 days.
In other action, the board
recommended closure of por
tion of the lone city streets
which still run on school
property, Fourth, Fifth and
Green Streets. According to
Chuck Starr, the city says it
took action to close Fifth
street at the school but that
information has never been
recorded on county records.
Supt. Doherty was designa
ted as the district official
responsible for Public Law 874
which authorizes federal
monies in lieu of property
taxes.
Doherty asked the board for
permission to attend an admi
nistration conference and an
nounced that on August 27,
new teachers would be given a
tour of Morrow County by
Harold Kerr.
In other business, the board
approved the appointment of
Paul Sumner on the Heppner
advisory committee to fill the
vacancy caused by Jim
Wishart's appointment to the
school board; Sumner was
also appointed to the budget
committee; Pauline Winter,
was appointed to the transpor
tation committee along with
Jim Bloodsworth and Claudia
Hughes.
