"What about the young

why haven't they had an

"They were totally out of it.
The Iran government is al

Packwood said the federal

Ullman keeps
in touch by
phone after
knee injury
Quick thinking and consi
derable cooperation between
the staff of Congressman Al
Ifliman and seven telephone
:ompanies serving Eastern
Dregon kept the congressman
)n track for a six-day series of
meetings with constituents in
11 cities (August 8-15).
Ullman had planned to
nake 17 personal appear
inces. However, a knee injury
suffered Monday at his Arling
on, Va. home forced cancella
ion of the trip, according to
Sd Grosswiler, his executive
issistant. Tuesday, doctors
wdered Ullman to stay off his
eet for four weeks.
Around noon, Tuesday,
Grosswiler called Pacific
Northwest Bell in Portland
about the possibility of setting
up conference phones in 15
locations so that Ullman could
telephone.
By Tuesday evening, Gross
wiler says, the phone hook-ups
were being arranged. The first
meeting was Wednesday even
ing. "I would rather be there in
person, of course," Ullman
said. "But I was delighted that
the fast work of the telephone
companies enabled me to
speak directly to the people of
Eastern Oregon."
The conference phones were
obtained from Boise, Idaho.
And, telephone companies
serving the areas where
Ullman was to speak made
special phone installations.
"It was a little bit unusual,"
commented Larry Wolfard,
PNB's Oregon vice president.
"It involved working rather
rapidly with six other phone
companies to make sure
Congressman Ullman could
depend on talking with his
audience the instant he called
them from his home.
"It's a real compliment to
the congressman's staff and to
the many people who worked
behind the scenes in the seven
telephone companies that the
job was done quickly in a truly
professional manner."
Other telephone companies
involved in the hook-ups
besides PNB were: Mountain
Bell; Malheur Home Tele
phone Co. (Ontairo); United
Telephone Co. of the North
west (Burns); Home Tele
phone Company (Condon);
Telephone Utilities of Eastern
Oregon (Fossil); and General
Telephone Co. of the North
west (Enterprise and La
Grande). Ullman 's meeting schedule
included stops in Ontario,
Burns, John Day, Heppner,
Condon, Fossil, Pendleton,
Enterprise, LaGrande and
Baker.
