Mrs. Curtis (Beth) Stevens
of Pendleton spent last week
in Irrigon with her mother,
Mrs. Ruth Bentley. Leon
Bentley is now in Hiersche's
Nursing Home in Pendleton.
Mrs. Stevens also visited her
mother-in-law, Mary
Stephens.
Minnie lloadley spent sev
eral days visiting friends in
Irrigon. She was enroute to the
Spokane area to spend some
time with her children there.
The Lloyd Frankie family
were all at home this week
except for their son David in
San Antonio, Texas.
There was a special family
dinner at their home Saturday
for Jerry Franke of San
Antonio, Mrs. Mollis Court of
Portland, Sharon and Jim
Hoffman of Pleasanton, Calif.,
Mr. and Mrs. Herb Prosser
and baby of Irrigon, Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Franke and Jed
and Mrs. Franke's cousin
Vera Geisler of Irrigon.
Early Oregon history came
alive, Saturday, August 4. for
the Wilson family gathered at
the Irrigon Park for a family
reunion.
Descendants of William
Stanage Wilson, 1821-1917.
Charles Orin Wilson, 1854-193(1
and Edwin M. Wilson 1878
1932, came from Calif., Wash.,
Idaho and Oregon.
Wilson River south of Port
land was named for the early
pioneer William Stanage Wil
son, who homesteaded in the
area. Original maps were on
display which showed the
homestead land particially
covered by the waters of the
Cottoage Grove reservoir
now.
He acted as an Indian scout
for wagon trains heading
west in the early 18()0's. He is
credited with saving the lives
of a wagon train that his group
came upon, by shooting a
sackful of jack rabbits for
food.
One early document on
display a! the gathering was a
copy of a deed given by him
for sale of a mine for $50,000 in
Baker County. He also owned
and developed mines in the
Boise Basin in Idaho, and
around Battle Mountain in
Nevada.
One grandson Kenneth Wil
son of Portland was present,
among approximately 150 at
tending the gathering. The 6
remaining children of Edwin
Wilson, were present with
their children and grandchild
ren. Two sons of Edwin
Wilson, Chester A. ' and
Charles are still living in
Irrigon with their families.
One cousin Ella (Betterly)
Kimball attended from Grass
Valley, Calif, with her hus
band and grown son. She had
not visited with the family for
more than 30 years.
Professor Feathers not retired
The Gazette-Times incor
rectly spelled the name of the
professor who identified cul
tural and historical sites on a
trip through "Hell's Half
Acre."
The correct name is Profes
sor Joseph Feathers, PHD,
professor of anthropology. He
is not retired and is looking
forward to a future teaching
assignment.
He has taught 11 years at
Western Montana College and
11 years at Lewis-Clark State
College, Lewiston.
Obsidian projectile points
found in the region came from
Paulina Butte near Paulina
Lake, southeast of Bend,
Oregon, named after Chief
Paulina, a Warm Springs
Indian Band. Some came from
Powell Butte near Burns.
