Corps undertakes environmental review
An Environmental Review
of Water Withdrawls in the
Columbia River Basin has
been undertaken by the Army
Corps of Engineers, the
agency announced this week.
Effects on fish, wildlife,
navigation, recreation, and
power resulting from with
drawing waters from the
rivers and reservoirs of the
Columbia Basin are being
studied according to Colonel
Terence J. Connell, Portland
District engineer.
"In the past, the waters of
the Columbia River were seen
as an unlimited . resource,"
Colonel Connell said. "But
with the growth of the region's
population and economy it has
become apparent that there
will not always be enough
water to meet the needs of all
users."
When complete, the study
will provide a central source
of information about water
withdrawl throughout the Col
umbia Basin. It will be used by
the Corps of Engineers in its
permit program, and it will be
a source document and refer
ence for federal, state, region
al and local resource planning
agencies and other interested
groups.
Since withdrawls for irriga
tion are the largest by volume,
they will be a major focus of
this environmental review.
