City of Heppner opens Hager Park
on Fourth of July

The city of Heppner has two
parks with the opening of
Hager Park on the Fourth of
July on the Willow Creek
Road.
City workers, Winn Crist,
the city's traffic enforcement
officer and park maintenance
worker and a fellow employee,
Kevin Chick, have built and
installed 8 park benches at the
new park, have installed an
underground sprinkler system
and added waste barrels to the
site.
Mayor Jerry Sweeney says
when fully completed under
Phase II of the park project,
Hager Park will have tennis
courts, basketball backboard,
horseshoe pits, baseball dia
mond and playground equip
ment plus restroom facilities.
The mayor dedicated the
site following a Bicentennial
parade in the city July 4, 1976.
The park used to be an alfalfa
field and in 1974, Gene Pierce
of the Eastern Oregon Bank of
Heppner, raised $1,600 , in

aunaay picnic new picnic benches at the city's newest park, Hager Park, located on Willow Creek. Crist and
Chick built the benches and installed the underground spryikjing system.

engagement of their daughter,
Kathy Louise to Curtis G.
Cutsforth, son of Mrs. James
Barrett of Heppner.
The wedding has been set
for August 25 at the Blake
Addition.
Student on
OSU honor
Kathy is a 1978 graduate of
Condon High School and
Curtis, a 1975 graduate of
Heppner High School. In 1978,
he graduated from Blue
Mountain Community College
and is employed at the Pat
Cufsfotfh Ranch"..

Hazel Mahoney, he and his
wife, Dr. and Mrs. Ed Shaffitz,
Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Gardner
and Mr. and Mrs. R.B.
Ferguson to purchase the land
for the city; most of the land
was donated by the late
Emma Hager.
Fill for the site was donated
by Stanley Cox and according
to Mayor Sweeney, the city
and county combined their
equipment to move the earth
to the park.
So far, the.city has received
about $3,000 in matching funds
from the State Bureau of
Recreation and State Park
Commission to develop the
project. Mayor Sweeney said
an additional $1,000 was don
ated by the former Jaycee
Chapter for playground
equipment.
Winn Crist has spearheaded
the project and told the
Gazette, 150 fir trees were
planted along the portion of
Willow Creek which runs
through the park. Other shade
trees will be planted, says the
mayor.
Also planned is a fence
surrounding the site to pre
vent damage to the new turf
donated by Eric Anderson of
Earth Carpet.
And R.B. Ferguson, one of
the neighboring property
owners is in charge of
watering the property every
other day.
Family
plans
reunion
The McDaniel family re
union is slated for Sunday,
July 15 at Anson Wright Park.
A potluck dinner is sched
uled. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
1979 Morrow County Fair
Premium books are now
available at post offices in
lone, Lexington, Boardman,
Irrigon and the Coast to Coast
Store in Heppner, also at the
County Extension office.
The Morrow County Fair
will be held from August 18
through 21 and the fair
committee extends an invita
tion to your organization to
enter a community booth as a
way of telling the community
about what you do and adding
color and interest to the fair.
Theme of this year's fair is
"Along A Country Lane." The
premiums are $15 for first
placet $10 for second, $5 for
third, and $10 awarded to each
organization entering the
competition.
This year's booths must be
completed by 9 p.m. Friday,
August 17 and are to remain in
place until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday,
August 21st.
All booths must be register
ed with Fair Secretary Nancy
S. Bruch by August 6 and a
drawing for booth assign
ments will be held on August 7.
Adventists host district meeting here
Saturday for Condon, Spray
The Heppner Adventist
church will be host to a
District meeting Saturday,
July 14 when Condon and
Spray members and friends
join them for an all-day
meeting.
The subject of the day's
services will be the how-to of
Bible study. Mrs. Dianne
Forsythe, of College Place has
just completed a book on the
subject, and she has agreed to
come and share some of her
information and suggestions.
Mrs. Forsythe will take the
11 a.m. service, and after a
potluck fellowship dinner at
noon, she will again speak in
the afternoon at 2:30 p.m.,
also in the evening at 7 : 30 p.m .
This promises to be a
program of value to Christians
of all faiths, and anyone
interested in a better under
standing of the art of Bible
study is cordially invited to
attend.
Gooseberry club elects officers
Our club, the Gooseberry
Livestock 4-H, meets once a
month at the home of mem
bers, with fifteen members
enrolled.
Seven steers were weighed
in April for the carcass contest
at the fair market. Hogs are
being fattened by three mem
bersand seven will show their
lambs.
Mrs. Bob Van Schoiack is
the new leader this year.

leaders.

At the June meeting, Paula
Palmer gave a demonstration
on sheep showmanship. Jason
and Larry assisted her with

Our next meeting will be at
Rills. A presentation covering
swine production will be given
by Dean Rill.

straight A average as a senior
in science. Mark Sargent and
Shelly Thompson, Heppner
received 3.5 gradepoints or
better. Sargent is a sophomore
