Monday Morning
Quarterback
By Jim Hackett
Ah, Monday morning and nothing about those aches and
pains from those weekend athletic events. Maybe you played
too much tennis or had to catch the last fish in that cool,
mountain stream, there's nothing like escaping it all with
summer recreation.
And now you're paying for it with those groans as you
slide your contorted body behind the desk or climb up the
tractor. Serves you right for trying to outdo your young son
on the basketball court or breaking around the left end in a
summer football game.
You start to wonder whether the professional athlete that
does that type of thing ever complains about his injuries
Monday morning. Sure, he does but he gets paid for it. But in
a way, so do you, with all the healthy air absorbed in the
lungs and that youthful exuberance re-injected into your
system.
Well, enough for the sympathy routine. Let's start off
with congratulations to Dale Holland, the new Heppner High
School basketball coach. I'll wish you the best of luck as you
consider the basketball season. If your baseball program is
any indication of the enthusiasm and talent you have, the
coming season will be exciting.
One sign of the approaching football season, at least in
Heppner, was the mailing of letters to Heppner Mustang
football players by Coach John Sporseen. John may be trying
to enlarge his team this year (and we haven't confirmed this)
because a letter was sent to a boy not even on the team.
I have to apologize to Charles Rawlins for writing a quick
headline saying that he "almost made the tourney cut."
Rawlins did make the tourney cut and was only 11 from the
tourney winner. Nice going, Charlie. If you keep on swinging
the clubs, you may end up on the PGA circuit with Jack
Nicklaus.
